I say it's an IDE device to usb converter. This device can take any IDE powered device (cd/dvd rom, hdd) and have it connect to any computer with an usb (1 or 2.0) port.

Why is such a device which does exactly what an external cdrom drive so amazing? Well, aside from saving my arse by letting me fix the laptop loaned to me prior to going to Hong Kong, it's also a nifty piece of yay. You plug in a 200 gig hdd filled to the brim with whatever data you want (to keep this legal, think company install files, drivers, the like), and you can easily go from computer to computer installing it all!

OMG just the thought of running around with 200 gigs of anime to share with people (because I'm too stupid to set up a wifi lan) is making me giddy....your turn!

Hmm. Not sure I'd agree with that, but I use a desktop machine, so y'know.

802.11x wifi cards, especially in laptops. It's fun to walk around the house or outside and still be able to download pornography at 1.5mbps.

Is that just any wifi? I have one and it automatically searches for wifi networks. Amazing stuff, really.

If the CIA cracks (http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article111.php) a wifi in 3 minutes, the real hackers probably do it in 2. I dont like wireless... its unnessecary and i dont want the RIAA spying on me. Hey just cuz im paranoid doesnt mean people arent following me.

Well if ur talking about components inside a computer as well, id have to say the SLI piece that connects both my video cards.

But if u just mean the stuff outside the comp. then yeh... i guess... wireless... is decent... kinda...

Ever been wardriven? Ever gone wardriving? Fun stuff.

As for peripherals...I would have to say my surround sound receiver. Although it is technically A/V equipment, it plugs into my Audigy 2 with digital coax, so it's technically a peripheral. :D

The keyboard immediately springs to mind. Out of everything else, I can't image not having a keyboard.

Coming in at a close second would be the mouse.

You'd be pretty fucked without a monitor.

Fun when you live or near an area with an abundance of wifi, elsewise it kind of sucks.

I could only use netstumbler anyway, since the last time I went the laptop I was using didn't have a widely Linux-compatible card in it.

Fortunately, the neighborhoods around my house are filled with people who have wireless networks and couldn't even spell "security". :D Last stumbling run, we picked up many open networks.

We did find that the quality of the wifi device in the laptops made a big difference as to picking up more networks. I've heard of people building antennas and range extenders to connect to their machines so they can pick up signals over a larger range.
