I cannot think of a specific incidence when I have laughed at something I did not understand. Usually I will ask people to explain it which ruins the joke. I even ask when I have understood it just to ruin the joke.

It depends. If people are laughing and I don't understand why, I think:

1) Oh, this is some inside joke thing, instead of asking about it and attracting attention and ruining everyone's "oh so funny" moment I would go "heh" and then act like nothing happened.

3) That's so stupid. Why would anyone laugh at that? But I'll laugh anyway so they won't get offended.

Depends on what mood I'm in, it's either because I find something funny, I just feel like laughing, or I'm making an attempt to cheer myself up (which never works).

If I don't get a joke I will give a little chuckle, and if I really don't get it I will ask for them to explain it. And chances are if I don't get it, others around me who were actually laughing don't get it either. There have been times when others around me laughed at a joke, then I had it explained and they laughed again. I assume that means they really didn't get it the first time.
