I was talking to my mum on the phone the other day. She told me my brother had eaten a whole cake and I said 'Rofl!'
She was like '...What?'

So now I know. I'm officially a computer geek.
Have you ever said stuff like 'lol' and 'rofl' in real life? Are there other signs to watch out for?

Jebus
06-05-2005, 02:30 PM
Yes I have.

Or like when I said AFK when I had to do something while I wasn't even at my computer. Or if you're handwriting an essay and look to the bottom right of the paper looking for the time.

I don't see wtf, brb, or lmao as pronouncable for some reason. I actaully say in my head what they mean whenever I type those or see them on screen. lol I can see myself saying, but I don't. Same with rofl. But I've only recently gotten into not saying that one in my head and just going with everyone else on "roffle". omg, stfu, etc. I they're just abbreviations for me. When actaully talking I say them out. Oh my god. Hell... I type them out almost all the time. I don't actaully use very many abbreviations...

I've almost said 'lol' a few times, but I stopped myself just in time.

Old Manus
06-05-2005, 03:52 PM
I dont. <s>rofl</s>

Sepho

I said 'lol' once, which was immediately followed by no less than fifteen seconds of silence by all persons in earshot. I had the urge to go home and find comfort at the end of a noose, but hey, I'm still here.

I say 'Oh Em Gee' and 'Double-U Tee Eff' frequently as inside jokes amongst my gamer friends, because no one else knows what we're talking about.

Yeah...but it is usually in a joking/mocking way.

WHO I AM KIDDING! It is still just as bad :crying2:

I say stuff like 'lol', 'omgwtf', 'brb', etc. Usually, I just pronounce the letters, like 'brb' = Bee Ar Bee. I said 'lol' to mum a few times, and she just stared blankly at me. Also, when I'm about to do something improtant, I'll often think 'Uh-oh, better save in case it goes wrong'. My life is going DIGITAL! O_O

About two weeks ago I couldn't stop saying lol, but it annoyed everyone so I was forced to stop after only a week.

Saying stuff like lol for real isn't that big of a deal, because when we type it, it sounds normal in our head. But I myself have never said anything or done anything like that.

I sometimes say lol when some one gets owned, pwned, or pwnt in real life situations.

For example, a person trying to sell stuff on the side of the street, getting a puddle splashed all over their wares deserves a nice, hearty LOL. Sometimes even as much as an LOLZ.

Chris
06-05-2005, 06:10 PM
I always do this xD

Oh yeah, my friends and I've been saying "OMGROXORPWNED" a lot lately, which is usually met with a "WTF".

Only, ya know, spelled out.

Oh yeah, I say Owned alot.
It's my boyfriends fault, because long long ago* when we were best friends, he and another few friends made me play CS:S, and then, I found it fun, and kept playing it with them, as my brother owned the game anyway.
And yes, I'm sure I'm a girl. :D

No. I may spend most of the day on the computer, but at least I have the decency to keep this perverse Internet pseudo-language out of my standard dialect.

06-05-2005, 07:45 PM
I don't think "owned" counts as geek-speak.

In any case, I don't have these issues. Yay for social skills. :)

I say "meh" in real life all the time, didnt even know i was doing it for the longest time, until another nerd pointed it out to me.

Leeza
06-05-2005, 07:52 PM
I never use any of those terms while I'm on the computer so I sure don't use them when I'm not on the computer.

Yamaneko
06-05-2005, 07:53 PM
"Meh" did not originate in the Internet.

Resha
06-05-2005, 07:56 PM
I know I'm a computer geek without saying of those things. xD OMG, probably. I'd find it hard to say rofl and lmao in real life with the same gusto. xD

really??? well thats where i got it from. Anyways thats pretty much it, and when my friends are jokingly being nerds i say "omfg-wtf-h@x0r".

Jojee
06-05-2005, 08:00 PM
You have to get out of bed to reach the computer :p Unless your computer is right beside you on the bed and you sleep with it and cuggle it and spoon it every night! ....:shifty: I wouldn't put that beyond some of you xD

My name is...something..?

I know a person who says OMG to sound kinda like omega and it is really annoying, like beat with stick annoying.
"Omg! Omg! Omg! Did you, like, see, like that, like guy"
I say roxor sometimes, and lots of people I know say lol, but on the whole I tend to stick to regular english... unless gah! counts. Then I'm screwed.

I've said "omg" and "wtf" in real life. jokingly. also "lol".

and I've used the word "pwned".

but for the most part I use real english words. jolly good, wot wot? if you drive your lorry too fast on the frog and toad, you might get stopped by a bobby and need a barrister to defend yourself. and that would soil your honour. this is my favourite thing to do, making fun of brits. <3 xD

DMKA

I've been saying stuff like "oh em jee ell oh ell!" lately just to make people look at me weird due to the fact that they don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

But you mean like, in an actual conversation, unintentionally, where I'm paying attention? No.

My brother, Yuki, goes 'lol' and 'lmao' and 'omg' ALL the time. It drives me nuts, especially since, he sometimes affects his gay man voice.... *kills Yuki*

Roffle.
Lolz.
Loool.
Doubleyou tee eff.
Eksdee.
Less-than-three.
Uparrow underscore uparrow.
Pwned/pwnzed.
'O__o' - generally comes out as 'Ooooh', but sounds more surprised than it ought to.

I am proud of cross-pollinating the spoken word and the typed!

I also frequently find myself wondering how to change what I'm looking at. When I'm reading a book. "Where are the back button?!"

Kirobaito
06-06-2005, 03:10 AM
Jeff and I never actually have real conversations, but when we deem it accurate, one of us will say "owned." The other will say "pwned." And then the original person will say, "Nah, nah. Bwned."

But he looks at me with a blank expression on his face.

Saying abbreviations outloud ticks me off so much. I accidentally said LOL once in 1999, and I regretted it, and never tried to do it again since.

The stupid msn msger and xanga kids that go 'omg jay kay jay kay' annoy me SO incrediably much.

(However, saying actual words, like pwn and pwesome and l33t is perfectly fine. *coughs*)

I am a geek by default. No one around me has my level of geekery, however small it is, so I fill the spot.
