A cent is just a short way of saying percent, because 100 cents = 1 full dollar. A quarter, is a quarter of the dollar 1/4 or 25 cents.

Do all phone numbers start 555 - something??
No, that's just a common gimmick that film makers use as opposed to randomly generating eight numbers. I guess they think people might try and prank call any real number they give out.

Is a cent more than a dime or a quarter or a nickel or a dollar?? That is the money in America.......right??
"cents" are percents of a dollar. A penny is one, a nickel is five, a dime is ten, and a quarter is twenty-five. A dollar is the full unit.

1. What is Root beer?
A type of soda/pop/whatever.
2. What is a Corn Dog
A hot dog on a stick with breading. Don't listen to RSL, they're quite good with mustard.
3. Which sport is more important American Football, basketball or baseball?
American Football. It consumes people moreso than any sport over here.
4. What sort of food does Wendys serve?
Hamburgers, fries, and chicken nuggets. It's pretty much the same menu as McDonald's except slightly more expensive and higher quality. Their spicey chicken sandwiches are pretty much my favorite fast food item.
5. What is the most popular department store?
Wal-Mart. Without a doubt.
6. Do all people in the suburbs really have American flags outside their houses?
Not usually. Only in times when we're supposed to be patriotic. 9/11, start of the Iraq war, national holidays, etc.
7.Is the BBC available on cable?
Yes, on extended cable and satellite channels we receive BBC America, which from what I guess is a horribly watered-down version of the real thing. Basically they show the source of the American recreations, despite the fact that nobody cares anymore. Recently there have been entire marathons of The Weakest Link. Does anyone watch that anymore?

Do you honestly call the backside a "fanny"?
It might get thrown in from time to time, particulary when trying to add humor aimed at the younger crowd. Saying it is usually tongue in cheek. Not a common thing at all.

1) A drink. We have it here as well, you know...
2) Nummy. :D
3) None of them, all sports are silly. Though I tend to say football just to wind up all us Brits who get wound up about the terminology of that and soccer xD
4) Same as McD's, usual kind of thing. Good though. I'd give Wendy a few hours alone with a lobster.
5) Wal-Star-Mart is the most used, whether it's the most popular or not I dunno.
6) No, a fair number dp, but it's not even close to 'all'. It's just such a big change from the total absence of them here, aside from when there's some big sports event on. (Ain't that just the pinnacle of patriotism? Nevermind your scientific achievements. Nevermind your standard of living. Nevermind your cultural and social contributions. Nevermind your sheer wealth, Britain. Nevermind having ruled the planet. Oh no, the best reason to be patriotic is... because people born in the same geographical boundries as you can kick a ball better than people who weren't.)
7) I know you can get BBC World. I don't know if you can get any other channels, though. And I don't know if it's through cable or Sat. It's one of the few things I'll really miss over there... ah well.

The only thing that's wrong with the Americans changing the English language is the spelling. Everything else they have done to it has been great, in all seriousness. Good work, America.

For example, we'd be saying housey-housey instead of bingo, mineral drink instead of soft drink, and wireless instead of radio if it wasn't for our dear American friends.

But a question for Americans: What's with the spellings, guys? Seriously...or should that be seriosly...would you be so kind as to pick up the slack? Thanks. :)

1. How come you guys refuse to brush your teeth? It's not like it's hard to do.
Whereas the French are allergic to soap, all Brits melt (in a bad way) when they come into contact with bristles or Colgate.
2. How come you talk funny?
We all went to juvenile detention centres, is why we make such good football hooligans, and why we're always walking funny.
3. How come you hate us so much?
Because you suck.
4. Tea isn't that good, guys. C'mon.
That's because all tea in America is laced with rat poison because if you enjoyed it you'd invade China and monopolise tea all over the world, then Arthur and Betty would have nothing to put the kettle on for, and they like that kettle Spiff, they like it. It was a wedding present from Jesus.
5. Cheerios?

Question for the Brits:

How come you brought cricket to all your ex-colonies, like, oh, say, India, but you can't win a single damned World Cup while your ex-colonies go on to rout your asses every single time? :p

Funnily enough we only ever won the football (the real kind, not the American kind) World Cup once, nearly forty years ago. And I think we invented/spread that. We're generally piss poor at team sports, though we won the rugby world cup not too long ago. I think it's because our childhood activities tend to involve more vandalism and assault and less pee-wee baseball type things.

The Brits are just about your only ally in the world right about now. Don't go alientating yourselves from them too, silly American peoples.
And yet you hate us so much....

I am not British, I'm Irish (another rare breed that likes American people), but some Americans seem to mistake constructive critisism & light hearted banter for 'hatred'. I love my family, sometimes they piss me off, I won't always agree with them & at times we barely have a good word to say about eachother, but at the end of the day, I'd die for them. The Brits were one of the few that went with you to battle weren't they? Enough said.

Because 95% of Britain couldn't care less about cricket.

And may I ask, if India's so great, how come you've got a population of 1 billion, but can't win a football match?

This is where I jump in. It appears you all need my help. I am british, living in the united states. So, let me mediate all of this for you.

I speak american because I was raised here, but my mother and ALL her family is english/irish. My mum raised me, so I know a LOT about english and irish culture and prefer it to many americanized versions of what england has.

Firstly I'll address the spelling. The word Colour/color and Harbour/harbor sound the same in english, however in american harbour and colour would be pronounced harboor and coloor, which is incorrect. So, to eliminate confusion they dropped the u. Also if you look at all languages that have been cut off from its mother country. Australians speak differently than english as well. If you take a Brazilian to Portugal, a Quebecios to France and a Mexican to Spain, they'd all have problems speaking because of the different dialects in which their contries language has evolved. Its not an american thing at all.

Next, The first post asked a few questions that weren't specified properly. Root Beer was said as a soft drink/soda/pop and left at that. For all they really know it could taste like pepsi, or watermelon. No one specified the taste. Its hard to describe the peculiar taste of root beer because its not one specific taste. it is the combination of vanilla, sasparilla, sassafras root, anise and molasses among other things. The strongest of those ingredients is the sassafras root, giving it the name root beer.

next issue. One of the british posters here said that the brits invented the car. Well, sure, if you think everyone uses steam cars... the germans were the SOLE makers of the first gasoline powered car.
Now adressing the issue of best cars. If you want to go by looks, no one can truly say which is best because its all opinion. However, Consumer Reports, which is one of the worlds top product testing companies claims the top car makers are (in alphabetical order, not from best to worst) Acura, Honda, Lexus, Saab, Subaru, Toyota. So.. If I'm not mistaken. Neither American nor british car companies are on that list. Looks mostly Japanese or German in there. Acura and Lexus I'm unsure of.

Oh, yes.. Wendy's. What separated Wendy's from McDonalds and Burger King is that they use square burger patties rather than circular ones. After Dave Thomas (owner of Wendy's, not the canadian actor) made his restaurant, named after his red haired daughter, a fast food chain he needed something else that the other franchises didnt. So he examined the menus of McDonald's, Burger King and a few other lesser known fast food stores and realized that they did not offer any desserts (this was back in the early 80's i believe) and so he created a half water, half milk based frozen treat and named it the frosty. Since then the frosty has gone under several changes to make it taste better (it used to have a chalky taste) and so that people who are lactose intolerant could enjoy it as well. Since then Wendy's has become the "dieter's fast food place". They offer numerous low fat/low carb alternatives that Burger King and McDonalds has tried to emulate without success. It is said that is 20 years there will be more Wendy's than Burger Kings because of a combination of our tastes changing and bad publicity McDonald's has gained from numerous lawsuits and surveys. The majority of people who get turned off of mcDonald's seek their fast food needs at wendy's.

The "best" department store is all opinion. However it is true that Wal*Mart has the top sales among department stores. In the past there have been a few other top names in the department store wars. Sears-Roebuck was the top name for years. K-Mart os another name that popped up a lot but recently they've lost a lot of ground from a slew of different problems. the immergence of Wal*Mart and its lowest possible prices, Martha Stewart (One of their top spokeswomen) had her scandal and her association with K-Mart dropped veiws lower, followed by Rosie O'Donnell (another past K-Mart spokeswoman) becoming a lesbian (much of america is still anti-homosexual and any company that has ties to homosexuality is liable to take considerable losses). All of these put together caused K-Mart to recently go bankrupt. Another company has recently picked up the K-Mart franchise kept its name and many of its stores.

The BBC, to my expanded knowledge, is not an official network that we can pick up on standard cable television. It is a possibility that it can be found on satellite. I do know that several brtish sitcoms can be foung on our PBS, which is generally seen as an educational. It stands for Public Broadcasting Station. It is not funded by any corporation, but by its veiwers. They hold bi-annual telethons to raise the money to keep the station on the air. Part of this money comes from the BBC, in which in return, PBS plays several television shows from the BBC. The Black Adder series, Keeping Up Appearances, Mr. Bean, among many others are routinely shown. PBS is NOT a cable natwork it is a standard network accessible to all much like NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox.

Flags on houses... Um, not all but many houses have some sort of patriotic symbol displayed. From a flag to a ribbon tied around a tree, e Americans love our country and are proud to say so. While we are divided on who should lead our country, we are united in the idea that our country is the best in the world and for that many other countries dislike us. They hate us enough to capture our planes and drive them into our buildings. But what they had not anticipated was that in such a defiant action, it unified our country more than it had been since the return of our troops from World War II.

Corn Dogs are a smaller frankfurter on a stick then dipped in a cornmeal batter and fried/baked (depending on how you prefer to make it) Many feel the taste of corndogs are disgusting, whereas many feel they are delicious. Its all a matter of taste.

Onto sports. Its hard to say what sport is the most popular because its an opinion of which is the best. In winter the majority will say Football, in summer they say baseball. Of if you ask a basketball fan any time of yoer they say basketball. I noticed you left out Hockey. Dispite my personal distaste for hockey, where I live it is the sport of choice. In general I'd say most of americans like football the most. Baseball has lost a lot of interest due to the fact that is a slower moving game, and less scoring than football and basketball. Basketball is unique because there are 2 'leagues" in which basketball is played popularly. there is professional basketball, which has teams like the New York Knicks, L.A. Lakers and Chicago Bulls. and there is the NCAA, which is a group of collegiate teams playing for a spot in the tournament at the end of their season. the term "march madness" is used for this tournament and they play a win and go on style tournament, where teams are seeded and exponentially go down in number until they are down to one final victor. The 4 best teams in the NCAA are referred to as the "Final Four". NCAA also has a football league of colleges with a full season. However, in lieu of playoffs they have the BCS. (I do not know what it stands for) It is a team of people and a computer who rank the teams in the NCAA and at the season they place teams in a "Bowl game". There has been much dispute over how teams are placed in certain bowl games but I'm not a fan of NCAA so i don't go into logistics. In summary I'd say that Football is the most popular sport in the USA, but Baseball, Basketball and Hockey do have large followings.

I'm going to go make dinner, a typical USA dinner of Macaroni and Cheese (not kraft in the box, but homemade). If any other british have questions about america, i will be more than happy to explian in full detail.

American schooling is similar to europe, but its what we teach that differs.

Often children at the age of 4 are placed in "Pre-School" this is to get children accustomed to group learning. They mostly play interactive games like musical chairs and duck, duck, goose. Also they are taught base colors, if they do not know them already.

After pre-school children go through 13 years of schooling. The first year is called Kindergarten. its german for child yard, which makes not a lot of sense. Since pre-school is not mandatory, many parents do not send their children there and kindergarten is basically slightly advanced pre-school. In addition to colors they are taught letters and numbers, sesame street stuff. After this the grades are numbered 1-12. 1-5th grade is called "elementary" school, 6-8th is called "middle school and 9-12 is called High School. More recently, many children, since they skipped pre-school have a hard time adjusting to the group environs. So instead of moving onto 1st grade, or re-taking 1st grade the are moved to pre-first, where they focus more on group activities and developmental skills than learning factual information. The average age of a High school graduate is 18, but in the coming years when the first "pre-first" generation comes there will be many 19 year olds among the graduating classes.

One of the major differences between american schooling and european schooling is the introduction of languages. In every school I've seen here in america the introduction of French, Spanish OR Latin (sometimes German) isn't until 6th or 7th grade and isn't a mandatory subject until high school. Whereas, from what I've learned of eeuropean culture, children are taught foreign languages at a much earlier grade level.

Also, College is not mandatory. In France if you pass certain exams you go to college for free.

Yeah, I can't explain why americans think british say Cheerio all the time. I think one famous british chap said it a lot back in the day and now all americans think all british say "pip, pip. Cheerio!"

Whereas, from what I've learned of eeuropean culture, children are taught foreign languages at a much earlier grade level.

I can't speak the whole country, obviously, but I know the only place I learnt any foriegn languages before year 7 (6th Grade in America) was in two years of private schooling. In addition our selection of languages (And subjects in general, for that matter.) is extremely limited compared to the schools of Americans I know. We could do French and German. Spanish was dropped because nobody was ever taking it, I don't think there was an Italian in the first place, there was certainly no Latin. There was Japanese, but nobody told any of us about that until it was much too late.

If the British education system worked as it was intended I'd consider it only lacking with regards to the choice of subjects. As it is however, I'd go to great lengths to have the chance to have had schooling in the US. Maybe someone might have noticed the whole 'horrifically intelligent' part and pushed me.

But hey, no point ranting about it, right? I personally do prefer America, but that's not to say Britain isn't a damn fine place to live. If we'd just take a baseball bat to the Nanny State's crotch, and did a bit less encouraging stupidity and a bit more encouraging success, we'd probably climb back up to the top, where we should be.

Most Brits I know of think the Bond movies are pretty spiffy. Can't complain myself, since we put old Pierce in the role we've had the best Bond since Sean.

The same reason we're currently inflicting Coldplay on the rest of the world. The majority of this country has zero musical taste.

Mainly because of those very chavs.

P.S: American Football = Rugby for pussies.
lets see

Average Rugby player:
Weighs-150 pounds
height:5'10"-6'5"
padding-no
the tackles-when your tackled oyu can suffer broken nose broken arm broken leg or spranged ankle. Most of the time you don't though pretty fun sport.

Average American Football Player:
Weight:150-300 pounds. The line is 300 pounds the defensemen average at 250 pounds of pure muscle charging at you.
height:5'10"-6'5"
padding-yes.

Tackles-Imagine 250 pounds charging at you as you carry the ball running and it hits you!!! bookm. Those paddings jsut keep you alive literally. After a tackle like that if its oyur first you'll feel it throughout the game.If it isn't then you'll feel it later and it sucks.

Another thing about american football is how unique it is with its plays it is truly a tacticians sport.

Just another thing about american education...it varies from state to state, and even from school district to school district. Each state is in charge of education inside the state, and can decide how to run things there. Some states centralize power more than others (California, for instance). Others, like Ohio (my home) leave schooling up to each district. All the decisions about school are up to my own town's school board, as long as they follow fairly broad state and national standards.

As for post-secondary education, the terms "college" and "university" are used fairly interchangebly here. Technically, a college is a school that teaches higher education in one specific field, while a university is merely a collection of colleges (My new school, Northwestern University has a college of arts and sciences, engineering, education, communications, musics, as well as graduate colleges of managment, law, and medicine).

There are really three subsets of higher education. First are community colleges used by some to get credits to then transfer into another school...they are usually fairly cheap, local, and only cover two years. The next are state schools, supported by each of the states, and charge lower tution. They offer full degree programs, each state usually has several. The final are the private colleges, they are the most prestigious, and expensive, but on the other hand can usually do what they want (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. fall into this category). Even though they are so expensive, many students get some sort of financial aid to attend...belive me, without it, no one would be going to these schools.

After 4 years (if you are a normal student), you recieve a bachelors degree (either a BA or a BS, the differences are mostly semantic). Graduate studies can lead to either Masters or Ph.D's...with varying lengths for each program...a masters is about 1-2 years full time, a Ph.D just depends on what field really.

Hope that helps.

Root beer is a drink made from ginger roots. It's too sweet to my taste, but it's still very popular--and a common way of drinking it is a rootbeer float, where you basically take a mug of rootbeer and toss a scoop or two of ice cream in it. Now, that's good stuff.

A corn dog is a hotdog wrapped in cornbread, usually with a stick in it so you can eat it with one hand. I think they're nasty, but they're still fairly popular.

Baseball, American Football, and Basketball are all cool, but they're not important. Rodeo is important. You can't call yourself tough until you've strapped yourself to a 2300-pound Brahma bull and told everyone to leave you two alone for a few moments to settle it out between you.

Wendy's is a lot like McDonald's except its a slightly better class of food--a little more expensive, but a little better.

Wal-mart is the biggest store where you can get anything, but otherwise there aren't many actual department stores left.

Suburbs are often regarded as the conservative strongholds of the nation, so they're often depicted as being so filled with American flags that you can't walk around without having one covering your face. While suburbs are most often significantly more conservative than cities, flags aren't quite that common.

I don't have cable, and I detest most TV programming, so I can't say about BBC. We have PBS, though, and from all I hear about BBC, PBS is just as bad.

And no, you can't have America back--but if you play your cards right, mebbe we'll make you a state.

And hominy is different from grits--grits are much like cream of wheat, except that it's made of corn instead of wheat, it's coarser, and only yankees eat it with sugar; you're supposed to eat it with salt and tobasco sauce.

SomethingBig--actually, the entire military history of the French can be summed up in WWII, wherein we "saved" them from the Nazis in about the same manner that Sir Galahad was "rescued" from Castle Anthrax. But polls wherein a plurality of French hoped Sodom whipped us and the frequent synagogue-burnings don't help much either. It's no coincidence that Americans who hate America keep swearing they'll move to France.

RedCydranth, most of us were rather pissed at O'Donnel long before she decided to be homosexual, because of her comments that anyone who wanted to own a gun should be jailed... followed by her bodyguard's application for a concealed-carry permit. And PBS owns the rights to Sesame Street, which gets about $800 million a year from selling various products, and Barney the Purple Dinosaur, which gets about a billion--plus they get extensive government funding.

Doomsday--yes, he used to just call himself "Prince". And he didn't used to prance around onstage in his underwear either.

And yes, some of us refer to the derriere as a "fanny", but we don't call it a "bum".

i can answer that in the late 19th century there was a defined effort in america to differ themselves from Their British cousins and create they're own identity and so they intentionaly altered parts of the English language for there own use.

1. What is Root beer?
-Root Beer is a soft drink brewed from the Sasparilla root.
2. What is a Corn Dog
- A hot dog wrapped in cornmeal and fried
3. Which sport is more important American Football, basketball or baseball?
-They all suck. REALLY suck.
4. What sort of food does Wendys serve?
-Good food
5. What is the most popular department store?
-Macy's?
6. Do all people in the suburbs really have American flags outside their houses?
-Not my family. But you see it more often the further south, or closer to the midwest you go.
7.Is the BBC available on cable?
-Yes. We have our own "special" BBC channel called BBC America that never shows the programs I want to watch!

And these

1. Why do you call chips 'fries'?
-Because we got them from belgium where they were called "pomme frites." We just translated the name.
2. Why are you all so fat?
-Because Americans have ridiculously easy lives and we're all lazy.
3. Why did you elect Bush...agian?
-I didn't vote for him. I've washed my hands of the matter. Although the proper answer is that the 40-odd percent that DID vote for him are complete morons.
4. Why do say aluminium really strangly?
-This one I can't answer, as I have no idea.
5. Why don't you like the Office?
-*I* like the Office. I think the problem is the god awful port they did of it on NBC. The original BBC one is brilliant.

yeah and look where it's got you, highest crime rates and prison poulation in the world, great job. :D

Anyway, i'm going to bed, night everyone, English and Yank alike.

And this is mostly because of our extremely poorly thought out "War on Drugs"

Most of our prisons are full of people who did nothing more than light up a joint and pass it (which counts as distribution here) and get caught. And if you do it within, I think it's, 500 feet of a school it's a class A felony.

The American idea of stopping crime seems to be to just arrest everyone involved instead of trying to stop the problem at it's source.

WTF? http://www.chavscum.co.uk

1. Perhaps about 40% of people here like them, I however find them a bore. You can only make the same thing so many times...
2. I didn't inflict them, the Pop industry did, so they're to blame.
3. Well, chavs cover about 15% of the population over here. they are the 'Scum of Society' & I very much indeed hate them / those types of people. All they do is cause mindless violence / vandalism. There is a 'craze' going around in this country in the Manchester area of 'Happy Slapping', which involves groups of teenagers (yes you guessed it, chavs) going up to someone with a camera phone. While the other lot hit the person(s) that they've gone up to the remainder films the incident. Not very funny at all. They're also to blame for the vast majority of loutish behaviour in our country. Drinking, doing drugs, having races with their cars in the streets, just general stupid things.
& in Scotland they're called neds. I'm not sure what they're called in Wales, but other names for them are pikey, townie, scally, & scouser.

1. Why do you call chips 'fries'?-dunno, why do you call them chips?

2. Why are you all so fat?-that's a sterio type and i find that offensive since i'm 5'6" 130 lbs. but most people just gorge themselves on food and sit and watch TV all the time. fast food around here is extremely popular, so that's another reason.

3. Why did you elect Bush...agian?-because kerry is a pathological liar and nader....well, i won't go there. bush is bad, but the other two weren't any better.

4. Why do say aluminium really strangly?-the english accent accentuates vouls and hard consinents like "T" and "P", the american accent is quite different in the fact that we say our words without much excentuation at all, which may also be the reason why some people are misunderstood at times.

5. Why don't you like the Office?-you mean work? can you be a tad more specific?

6. What is Root beer?- its a soda made from sugar cane. quite enjoyable

7. What is a Corn Dog- a hot dog wrapped in basically what amounts to a pancake

8. Which sport is more important American Football, basketball or baseball?- i'm a hockey person myself so to me none of the above

9. What sort of food does Wendys serve?-the same kind of food mc donalds serves but done differently

10. What is the most popular department store?- more than likely american egle or tommy hilfigure

11. Do all people in the suburbs really have American flags outside their houses?- some people have flags hanging yes. since 9-11 people have been showing the colors more. but not everyone, no.

12.Is the BBC available on cable?- not all cable providers have BBC. i do however enjoy the movie monty python and the holy grail. that is an absolute classic

We'd say "Set the table." here instead, I think. Isn't "Big girl's blouse" rhyming slang?...once you figure out that idea, it isn't hard to figure out that mouse is the word being rhymed. :D As for darn, it's a more polite alternative to damn...as for driving on the right or left hand side of the road, it has to more to do with wagons and cargo than swords, which by the way, you would want the other guy to be on your right, so you could whack him or block with your sword in your right hand..nothing to do with stealing, everything to do with self defense...In early America they had wagons without a driver's seat, so as to carry more cargo. The driver sat on the left rear horse so he could use the whip in his right hand to lash the horses, and since he sat on the left, they moved to the right when passing another cart so they could make sure the wheels didn't collide. In england, the driver sat on a seat mounted on the wagon usually on the right side of the seat so the whip wouldn't hang up on the load behind him when he flogged the horses. There's a reason for almost everything, and getting rude about little nitpicking differences is just plain stupid.

...I am interested in Anglo-American relations, & would like to respond to the Questions here...I know it's a long Thread here already - so please pardon if my answers are repetitive - !...;

1. Root Beer is disgusting only if you don't like sickly sweet Pop Drinks generally.
...It also depends much on the brand & how well it's done, you see...It's a bit like Sarsparilla & derives (originally & w/ Natural brands, anyway...) from some sort of natural root. Here in North New England (extreme northwest U.S.) A&W Root Beer is the king of Root Beers. Put vanilla ice cream in it for a 'float'...

...Couldn't you just Google this stuff, btw - ?!?!...

2. ...corn dogs are, however, utterly disgusting - this is true.

3. More rapes reportedly happen during the American Football 'Superbowl' than @ any other time...& when our government declares War - which essentially an entertainment program for the 'CNN' so-called 'News' Network...

4. Answered already...

5. Wal-Mart is larger than Bill Gates, & threatens to consume us all. Stop the Borg now - !!!...

6. Since 9/11, the flag thing is completely out of hand - ! Red, White & Blue is the new Black, as cartoonist Tom Tomorrow of 'This Modern World' has pointed out...
...I'm used to defending us Yanks against Brits talking about Ronald Reagan & Cowboys alll the time when we ain't all like that!; But since 9//11 & W - I don't have a leg to stand on anymore - !!!...Thatcher did win by a landslide, though - did she not - ?...

7. Poor people like me don't have cable, & get some British stuff on PBS, thank God Almighty - !...In the current Conservative climate, I doubt something like Python could be broken on it now, I would assert - !...

We'd say "Set the table." here instead, I think. Isn't "Big girl's blouse" rhyming slang?...once you figure out that idea, it isn't hard to figure out that mouse is the word being rhymed. :D As for darn, it's a more polite alternative to damn...

Haha...girls blouse means basically 'you are a wimp and a coward and I pity you, you pathetic little man.' No-one kinda uses that anymore.
Big girls blouse is not rhyming slang.
Rhyming slang would be:
My old man fell down the apples and pairs on his way to the local to buy some three cheers. Now he's brown bread.'
Ie my dad fell down the stairs on the way to the pub to buy some beers. Now he's dead.
Ok, I made up some of that slang....but you get the gist.

Darn = to mend. Darning socks = mending socks.
Only Americans to my knowledge use darn as a form of Damn, although I could be wrong.

1.Why is David Beckham so overpaid jsut for kicking a ball accross the field? In comparison to some of your NBA stars and Football stars, David Beckham is poor...very poor. And in the beautiful game (football) it's not just kicking a ball across a field that counts. It's doing it well, which Becks' does. Anyway, can't you say the same about your sports stars. Why was Michael Jordan paid so much (and still is paid so much) for dribbling a ball up and down a court? :D
2.What is it like living on an island? Your continant is an island..just bigger than ours. No different than living on any other part of land, apart from you are always about 150 miles from the coast.
3.Why do you guys have such horrible teeth? That is just our royal family. In general, we have nice teeth.
4.Why do black british sound so weird I mean I'm american and black but I have a low pitch voice why are there voices in britain so dang high pitched!!!!!! *cough* Generalisation. :D:D I think you find many of your Black citizens have high voices too, just as many of our black citizens have low voices. :D

When I was in America the first house I saw had a big banner outside saying 'GOD BLESS AMERICA' and a picture of a flag. A badly drawn flag. That scared me.

No F5's, but in South East England, we get at least 2 tornado's a year. They never cause any damage though, not even to trees.

To take a leaf from someone's book means to use one of their tactics or techniques. If my roommate steals from me, then even though I don't normally steal I might "take a leaf from his book" and steal something from him... Except that I don't smoke weed, and that's the only thing of value he has.

And I'd really like to see some evidence behind the claim that more women are raped on Superbowl Sunday than any other day. NOW (the National Organization of Women) made a similar claim several years ago, that more women were admitted to hospitals because of domestic violence on SSS than any other day--and in case you didn't already grasp that this is because celebrating manhood and being masculine means abusing women and therefore a day when men basically sit around doing 'man' things means a day when women get beat down, they explained it for us. It turned out to be a load of crap, but it can only be a matter of time before they move on to a new trick.

And while I realize this doesn't refer to England or the US, I figger there's got to be an Aussie or two on the thread, so lemme ask--do all Australians really want to curb-stomp Paul Hogan?

Also, the reason our words are shorter and spelled/pronounced simpler than yours is because Americans tend to bastardize every word we have or borrow.

lordblazer
06-12-2005, 05:31 AM
Yep us americans bastardize every single word oyu come up with.Really dude I guess.WE stolen a lot of words form other languages and intergrated them into english.Such as oklahoma,Tecumseh,Wyoming. You get what i mean but stiill I guess we are the only ones who bastardize english langauge becuase everyone other country that speaks english which BTW USA doesn't have a national langauge.

Actually, yes. I don't tend to hear a great deal of accents in singing, from either side of the Atlantic. Depends on who it is and their style, of course.

Edit: And Americans do not butcher the language. Don't make me get all Bill Bryson on you. If you really want to debate the various merits of the vast numbers of words America has given us, weighed up against the fact that they spell some things differently, then be my guest.

Pelé is a soccer/football legend. Google him.

We don't have "frequent tornados," we just happen to have a section of the country named Tornado Alley, because it's a flat, open section of the country that is somewhat more prone to tornados because of its topography.

Building our houses out of wood has nothing to do with tornados, we have insurance policies for that. 90% of Americans never even witness a tornado in their lifetime. We build our houses out of wood, because wood is an abundant, renewable resource, and just happens to be a great insulator. Also, the rate that houses are being built now doesn't really allow for too many wooden houses. They're all plastics and polymers with concrete supports.

The Redneck
06-12-2005, 08:09 PM
I work in construction, and they're still made of wood.

And the main reason is that if you built of stone strongly enough to resist a tornado, your house would be as expensive as hell and you'd have to be filthy rich to be able to buy one--those things will tear apart concrete schools and office buildings just as easily as wooden houses. And because of the way we build them, not only do they stand up to tornados better, but when they don't they're easier to rebuild.

another question

Why was the UK known as Albion?

Because we don't follow the Mexican League. The only football we follow is british and European.
Beckham is so great because he's always in the tabloids, he produces the goods and has become a celebrity in his own right. Style Icon/Model/Famous Dad. He diversified. So he's pretty good at marketing himself. Thats why he gets paid so much.
And as I said before, Beckham is pooor against Americas biggest stars. Here is an example, now probably out of date but from my World Sport Cultures Text book from school.
Roy Keane (another British hardnut Footballer) gets $80 000 a week.
Michael Jordan, now retired, gets $800 000 a week.

See what I mean?

I'm also pretty sure the UK has never been known as Albion.

We have a football team called West Bromidge Albion, but...apart from that I can't think of anything. Where did you hear that?

And I visited New Yoik. Was pretty much the first house out of the airport where I saw it. *scared still*
I counted about 27 US flags on one street as well.....Oh dear.
