Hey hey!!! just found my FFVII cd... and decided to embark on a journey to finish the things i left uncomplete for FFVII :)

remember that wierd snake swimming around near the chocobo ranch which you had to catch a chocobo to try to outrun? Yes!! its the Midgar Zolum!! hehe... was kinda interesting.. but i killed it at lvl 15!! whee!!! so proud.. wanna know how? :D

my party consisted of Cloud, Barret and Aeris, make a guess at the strategy before you look, to see if great minds think alike :)

Cloud: cuz you can't take him out, so he gotta do some damage ya? had Blade Beam, and a HardEdge i stole from the Shinra Building, and i gave him Poison materia, really helps against the Midgar Zolum which has 4000 hp, while you only have arnd 600hp

Aeris: Why? simple because shes the cheapest Healer around!! lvl1 healing wind is all she needs, and perhaps enough hp to survive 2 blows from the Midgar Zolum.. i equiped her with Restore-All materia X 2, as well as Cover materia :p

Barret: I'm not really much of a big Barret fan, though he now thats the center stage for this show :D 1 Mindblow would increase your chances of winning from -10% to 85%!!! extremely critical for disabling the Midgar's Zolum's Beta Attack which deals 1000++ damage to all remaining party members, a.k.a instant death

another thing of note, Use Hypers!! a single fang attack from the Zolum would be enough to push any of your characters to the limit break point :) have fun, and if you have any comments/suggestions on how this strategy can be made better, Do Tell!! :)

Sweet dreams all!!

I never thought of using that when fighting the Zolom. Great idea. :)

actually... the idea came to be by accident... was fighting creatures around that area :p using cloud barret and aeris together, since i managed to steal certain good weapons for them, then suddenly, i gotten barret's next limit break.... and it turned out to be the last piece to my puzzle! :D depletes around 350mp i believe

it took you *that* long to get it?!?! thats pathetic! :D but another thing you miht try to do is put E. skill on someone plus Elemental & fire in the armor and hope they get hit with Beta and have someone else get thrown out of the battle with that gay tail move.

*THAT* will help you out for a while in the game....

If your lucky, you can actually run across it without a chocob and not get caught. Takes a couple of tries though.

You can acquire an Elemental materia in Midgar by guessing Mayor Domino's password on the first try.

As soon as the Zolom rears up after taking some damage, it will use its eject move on its next attacker (generally). Because it won't eject someone that doesn't attack it, you can make sure that the E. Skill-equipped character remains in battle.

When confronting the Zolom that early, I've personally found that it helps to have all characters in the back row. This will effectively cut all physical damage in half, which is very useful at that point. This also becomes important after Beta is cast, since it's unlikely that one will have leveled the Elemental materia to the point where it can nullify or absorb an element. Since Beta will still deal 500-600 damage to the character with the Elemental, this can prove to be the difference in finishing the Zolom off.

The first time I played FF7, I did not know how to catch a chocobo(yeah, I know I was REALLY STUPID!). So I ran across midgard zolem area in my first try! I always do that for fun. Back and forth, back and forth. I also got a great timing for it. Since I was playing around like a jack ass back then, I fought it at level 12 or 13. I thought I could win easily, but when it used beta...........GAME OVER!
:eek: -> :( -> :cry:

A cheap way of avoiding Midgar Zolom is to dash across and right as he's about to touch you go to your menu and save the game then reset and reload and he'll be far away from you again allowing you to make it to the other side. This is great for the no-materia challenge.

I was a naive little fucker to, then Midgar Zolom brought me to my knees and I was all "@#%$ this /xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif" and made a run for it. I also became cocky toward the ending, then I found that boat and got killed by random encounters. In the process of getting Hades I told myself "Okay objective obtain summon. Main base, save spot, strategy run like hell, grab the summon and come back and try not to die, i used 99 potions trying to get that summon"

And here I thought I knew all the geeky secrets of the game. :p

Although it's frustrating to try for Beta early in the game, it's very worthwhile. Beta's one of the best E-skills in the game. Much more efficient than Fire materia.

And a helluva lot better than Flamethroewr from the Mythril Mines! :D

Good job using Mindblow - a nice alternative to Elemental+Fire.

But my initial plan was to get Beta :p .... haha... except i didn't know what else to do but pray his beat would miss (impossible ya?)

but well... most of the boss fights don't seem as intense as fighting Midgar Zolum at lvl 15 it seems... and i got the chance to use several limit breaks in a single battle :p got Climhazard in a snap

Hmm. I've done him in at around that level, but I think I used such an arrary of items that I killed him before he used Beta or something.

Of course, the most recent time through I got my chocobo, went through the mines, and trained around Junon/Fort Condor until everyone had all limit breaks except level 4s, plus they hit level 30+ and had reached level 2 in a fair few materia. Then I went back and kicked his tail. Then I had to do it again to actually get Beta, because I schooled him.

Edit: Good thinking with using the moves you used though. One of those never occurred to me!

I never try to defeat the Midgar Zolom that early (then again, I also power-level so that I'm at least LV 20+ by the time I leave Midgar), and don't bother coming back to whomp on the Midgar Zoloms until right AFTER the Gold Saucer, and then I just have one charachter with one of my Enemey Skill materias and the fire ring (null fire), and another charachter with the other Enemy Skill materia and elemental-fire on the defense (if I'd been REALLY twinking the game, the elemental-fire would have been to the point where it would nullify elemental damage), and I'd use Laser until the Midgar Zolom's HP < 500, at which point it would use Beta, and then once I learned that enemey skill, I'd kindly finish off the poor creature with its own attack :D

Of course, I'd also take a detour from North Corel to go down to the chocobo tracks and wander around (with the chocobo lure materia equipped) until I got a chocobo to appear with a chimera, then I'd just harass the chimera until it used aqualung, on my party. Needless to say, with Barret equiped with my best enemy skill materia (matra magic, flamethrower, laser, aqualung) I was able to defeat Dyne in all of three rounds.

I too have just beaten the Midgar Zolom at levels 15 (cloud) 15 (red XIII) and 13 (aeris).
My strategy was to poison the snake as soon as possible, and then use quake with cloud, and fire with red. Aeris just sat there and healed whenever it was necessary. This ensured that I stayed alive. Once I got him to around 1000 HP, I stopped attacking. This he can't use Beta. I just kept myself in good health and waited for the poison to slowly kill him.
