Nowadays people use the term 'Dark Side' to express evil and other bad ways of acting (even if they are not talking about star wars).

But was that term pretty much invented by star wars and it became popular because of the movies. Or was it a popular term to use to express evil even before the movies came out.

So did star wars invent the term the Dark Side. Or was the term already popular and they just incorporated the term into their movies.

The "Dark Side" lives in all of us.
Star Wars did not invent the term, it merely made the phrase more apparent to people. We all have a choice, a choice to be bad, and a choice to be good. It all really depends on each person.

It's based on the metaphor of light/darkness to represent good/bad. It's so simple I bet cavemen had some concept of it.

The Yin/Yang icon has a "light side" and a "dark side", and so does our moon. Both of these notions have been known for... ever, basically. Well, we've known the moon had a dark side ever since it was discovered to be a floating sphere, not a flat disc painted on the heavens:D
