I keep looking at threads about the latest movies and wonder "oo-er, will reading that thread spoil the movie much?" so I just don't bother. So! To keep things simple, this is a thread where you simply state the name of a movie which is currently screening and give it a rating out of five. Throw in a few words such as "utter crap" "breathtaking scenery" and "lead has a face that reminds me of my pitbull terrier" but keep all spoilers out of this thread - even when using spoiler tags! No spoilers at all is the main idea. You don't even have to say more than the movie title and rating if you don't want to. Hopefully this thread can stick around for a long time, too.

So, with that said, I haven't seen any of the currently released movies so I'll let you guys start it all off.

EDIT: This thread can now be used for all movies, old and new.

Sin City - 5. Awesome.

Mr and Mrs. Smith - 3. Kinda boring, not a great storyline, some amusing moments.

Ummm. That's all lately. xD

Not very new but everyone must go see Ong-Bak the greatest movie since "Sliced Bread" (Starring Robert DeNiro). I give it c/5 where c is the continuum number.

Mr & Mrs Smith - 2. Not as bad as the Tomb Raider movie(s?). :fpcow:

Mr. & Mrs. Smith = 4/5. Lots of action and some comedy. Don't go in expecting a great story line but you shouldn't anyways because it is a summer action movie. The movie set out to do what it did and it did it well. Nice action.

(I'm adapting it to a ten-point scale by using .5's and all that jazz)

<b>Sin City - 5. </b>
Beautiful. The dialog was ace, the visual style was unique and as faithful to the visual novel format as could be expected, and the mood was perfect. I have much love for Marv. Yeah, and the women were hot.

<b>Revenge of the Sith - 4</b>
The dialogue was just as bad as it's ever been. I would argue that even in the original trilogy, save for a few memorable quotes (i.e. "I love you." "I know."), Star Wars never excelled in this area. The final conflict was satisfying, but I was hoping they could squeeze more events into the film's considerable length. Also, Anakin is a weak-minded, easily manipulated, idiot. I always hated how the Jedi council -as wise as they are- could not see this coming, and continued to allow him to be trained.

<b>Sahara - 2.5</b>
The very definition of mediocrity. I can't pick apart individual things that I disliked about this movie, so I'll just say that there is absolutely nothing spectacular about it. At all.

<b>Hero - 4.5</b>
Not that new, but <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/sepho/1262.html">look here</a>.

Star Wars EP III - 4.5/5
What Sepho said. All the actors could've done a lot better with another director. Lucas's dialogue writing is dull and silly, like Harrison Ford once has said: "You can write this <img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif">, George, but you can't SAY it."
And I mean, come on, the Ewoks in episode VI (Lucas's idea)? Probably the most idiotic invention in the history of filmmaking, plz.
Anyhow, I was otherwise happy with the outcome of the trilogy and the story was binded together quite well, although I was expecting for more references to the "upcoming" events and to cry a lot more. However, the ending scene really caught me - and I believe that any older SW fans really had tears in their eyes in that part.
But the best of it all - again - was John Williams (the composer of the music, duh).

I'm so poor I haven't seen any other new movies recently. And hah, Sin City, Batman Begins or Sahara haven't even come out on our country's theatres yet x)

Hero - 4/5. Visually stunning movie set in China. It had a good story to boot.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith - 3.5/5. Probably would've ranked it higher if I took a real interest in Episodes 1 and 2. I enjoyed it.

The Italian Job - 4/5. Good espionage flick that entertained.

Awesome movie with exceptional effect. Good story, but I'm afraid it gets a little tedious after an hour or so.
Why do they need to analize everything? I really hated that too, it just seemed forced at times.

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Rate: http://:bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou:/63vn9i
One of best movies ever made. I loved the movie so much, the story, the battles, the Yoda-haze and the amazing capability this movie has. It sucks you right from the beginning, in my opinion one of the best movies in cinematic history. Seriously eye candy as well.

I figure I'll bump this up since it's more of an ongoing thing, and also start allowing for older movies as well as the latest. Basically just movies you've recently watched.

Young Guns - 5/5
Best Western I've ever seen, and have seen it many times now. Not your classic Western, either - I find the rock'n'roll music is surprisingly fitting to Billy the Kid's story.

Young Guns II - 4/5
Still good, but not as good.

Batman Begins: 4.5/5. I have to say this was the best superhero type movie I've seen.

Four Brothers: 5/5. I loved this movie. But this is a movie some people will either love or hate. In my opinion, it has one of the best shootouts I've seen in a movie.

In Her Shoes: 4/5. Original and funny. Best chick flick of 2005.

Tim Burtons Corpse Bride: 4/5. Original and entertaining. But, you only need to see it twice. Otherwise it gets too much for you.

Can't think of a fifth one.

DMKA
12-09-2005, 07:24 PM
Aeon Flux: 3/5. It was okay even though it was a rushed story due to making a 1.5 hour movie out of an entire animated series' storyline and dumbing it down significantly in the process.

Napoleon Dynamite: 1/5. What is it that people like about this movie aside of the dance scene?

Signs (4 out of 5)
A little slow and not as intense as I expected it to be, especially given Mr. Shyamalan's other films.

Kung Fu Hustle (3.5 out of 5)
This movie had a lot of humorous scenes, many of which played out like a live action cartoon. Certainly worth seeing, but a little empty and slapstick at times.

Star Wars Episode 3 (4 out of 5)
Certainly better than Episodes 1 and 2, but the script was not completely up to par with Episodes 4 and 6.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (4 out of 5)
I haven't read the book yet but the movie was still enjoyable, albeit strange. I especially enjoyed the visuals near the end of the movie (the whole planet construction scenes).

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire - Very nicely done. The special effects were nifty indeed, and it just about got everything from the book in without being too long (Though it did push it a little xD). Mad-eye Moody may well be one of the coolest characters on film. I don't remember him being that spiffy in the book.
4/5

Fantastic Four - This surprised me, because the trailers made it look absolutely dire. In truth, it wasn't anything special, but I could watch it now and then without any severe objections. Had they focused slightly more on the plot, they'd have done better (So long as Sue Storm wasn't invovled, as I didn't take a fancy to her at all.). They did an absolutely excellent job with The Thing though, and Detective Mackey fit into the role surprisingly well. Also, I have to note that for once the couldn't-care-less, headstrong, doesn't-listen-to-advice character of Johnny Storm was actually somewhat endearing, which is a rarity for me in such movies.
3.2/5

Crash - Uhm, well, wow. I really don't quite know what to say about this movie. I can remember one unecessary piece of exposition, and that's pretty much the only thing wrong with this film. It shows everything in the human range of experience, from amazing miracles to utter tragedies. Couldn't really be better. See it if you like films, or Humans at all, or have any form of emotional processing capabilities.
5/5

Walk The Line - An exceptional film about an exceptional man, and I don't just mean his talents. It was quite beautiful, and Cash fans certainly are likely to enjoy the insight into his life, whilst those who don't are just going to see a film about a simple, ordinary guy who makes some mistakes, and who you can do little but empathise with and root for.
4.5/5

To see:
Narnia
Jarhead
Brokeback Mountain

Edit: I must note that although I did not watch it recently, I give Kung-Fu Hustle a full 5/5 because it's the most fun I've ever had at a screen that isn't showing hentai.

Aeon Flux is the only thing I've watched recently. And I'd give it a 4/5. But that's because it was everything I wanted/needed it to be. Pure personal bias from a fan of the show I assure you. Though I'll admit it wasn't very much like the show, but I didn't expect it to be. Being live-acted and all. It brought in seriousness and drama with a nice Flux aire ^_^ But again, all personal. You probably have to see the series to appreciate a lot of it, as there were a LOT of nods toward the series. Some of them (like the beginning fly-in-the-eye [and I'm surprised they even attempted that]) are totally lame without knowing the reference.

American History X: One of the most controversial films of the last decade, and for good reason. Ed Norton is incredible as a Neo-Nazi on the reform, and this film deals with rascism like no film I've ever seen before. IMO much better than Crash.
9/10

American Beauty: Haven't seen this one for awhile, but upon my second viewing I found that I liked it much more. Spacey is hilarious in this role, and the film goes from funny to sad to beautiful, as indicated in the title. Definetly a great film.
9.2/10

Man On The Moon: Jim Carrey is great here as Andy Kaufman, and this movie pretty much gives a loose basis on his life. "Tony Clifton" in this movie is hilarious, but the film has a bit of a dramatic tone at the end. Great movie, one of Jim's best.

Sin City : 4.5 Awesome noir setting, violence was tight and so was the plot and cast (heads up on Mickey Rourke this bloke is great in this one)

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: 4 what can i say its the end of the saga, though saga just doesnt sound big enough! It started with a bang and end with a bang, nice sfx and nice rounding up to the characters minus the sappy love talk crap, this ones a keeper though

Batman Begins: 4 nice way to restore the franchise, good plot, effects werent too over the top...its just nice to see gotham city again

Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire: 4.5 This one is probably the best out of the four movies, its darker, richer and funnier. Special effecs were great, acting wise; their getting better overal it was a heaps fun movie, though the maze task was a bit anticlimatic

Fantastic 4: 3 Not really a plot driver though the fx were great i feel it was a tad overused, character development was put in the back burner which left the movie focusing on thier powers! Johnny seemed like an asshole and casting wise, alba as hot as she is, didnt seem right to be sue storm! The way they delt with the thing was great though!

Crash: 5 Great cast, great acting and intricate plot really pulls this movie together that centres around peoples response to the issue of racism and prejiduce. Its in your face, its compelling and watching my cousin cry in one scene showed how powerful this movie was to others and then some! With the same writter that did million dollar baby this movie is more of a wake up call to the every day world that we live in!

Charlie and he Chocolate Factory: 4 This remake starring Johnny Depp as the new willy wonka is real treat! though the sets look pretty similar to the original movie it was still breath taking a second time around, now focusing on Willy Wonkas past this movie is really awesome for all, special effects were great and the Ommpa Loompa's are as creepy as ever (which dont know if that were to be good thing or bad)! any ways the scenery awesome and it ends on a high cheers to Tim Burton on this one again!

Edison: 2 Just Shat, left me wondering why morgan freeman chose this in the first place, Timberlake is just not cut out for acting, its just thought this movie was a waste of time really!

Next movies to watch:
Corpse Bride
Narnia
King Kong

Either 1/5 or 2/5 - I will openly admit I only watched (most of) this because I think Elisha Cuthbert is hot. However, despite all her hotness, I had to skip through some parts because the whole thing just got boring. The idea behind it all had some potential and it made for some interesting moments, but I think it could have been done a whole lot better than it was.

The Island: B+
Popcorn flick, standard action fare. *Almost* touches on some really important social and moral issues, but doesn't tread too far in that direction, cause honestly, the audience they were catering toward wouldn't really care much for that sorta stuff. TWO Ewan McGregors (and for you males, two Scarlett Johansons). Holy crap, TWO OF 'EM! Lots of beautiful people running around. Also, there's this one scene with the word "dude" that was awesome. And for that reason, I loved this movie.

The Legend of Zorro: F-
Fresh off the heels of a magnificient performance as Puss in Boots, Banderas decides to do... this. Sub-standard production, overblown music, crappy CGI, predictable and utterly boring storyline, and mediocre and soap opera-ish acting. Worst movie I've ever seen in my life. Bad bad bad bad bad.

Elizabethtown: B-
Oh Orlando. It's an alright film, light and fun with amazing music. But given how highly I regard Cameron Crowe, how hopeful I am of Orlando Bloom, and how distasteful I am of Kirsten Dunst, the movie just didn't do it for me.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch: A
Beautiful. Dreamy and surreal and wonderfully, beautiful. Hedwig can convey so much passion and hurt and anger and hope with his/her eyes that it literally captivated me. The ending was confusing as hell, and I didn't quite know what happened, but everything prior to that was wonderful. It was part tragic, part comedic, part absurd drag-queen stage show. I loved it.

Gentleman Prefer Blondes: B+
It was good for me to finally see the musical from which a major part of Moulin Rouge was born. Marilyn Monroe is always amazing to watch on screen. She is luminescent. The thing is, the storyline isn't all that amazing, but that's not the point of musicals. It's about the colors and sounds and spectacular nature of musicals that really matters. And Gentleman Prefer Blondes hits the nail on all these things. Fun movie.

Oh yeah! The Island! I rate that somewhere between 4/5 and 4.5/5. Yes, that dude scene rocked, and I found the whole thing to be good entertainment. What I mostly enjoyed about this film was how it was original, though. At least, from the movies I've seen, it was. Maybe it's actually just a big rip off of something else that I don't know about. Either way, it was good stuff, and I never knew that Scarlett Johannson was actually capable of being hot like she was in that flick.

Shrek 2: 3.6/5 - Not as good as the first, though it was still very good.

Dawn of the Dead- 5/5.
Very good, very gory. It didn't waste time on pointless plot either, just jumped straight into the zombies. When the girl walks in at the begginning, it's a real shock. It looks like it's meant to be but is trying to trick you, so you think it's nothing, turns out it is. Double bluff?
Brilliant, anyway. Not corny or boring in the slightest.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- 4/5
The last one I remember seeing besides DotD. Good, funny, strange. The fact that the majority of actor's were awful was made up for by Depp's brilliant acting. It wasn't just a repeat of the old movie. Wonka was a different character, and good in his own, new ways. Tim Burton's real cool, and it stuck to his usual... thing.

Four Brothers - 3/5 Decent, but unintentionally funny in places. Solid acting, just subpar writing.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith - 2/5 Plays like a smart romance comedy with explosions. But, for a romantic comedy to work, you kinda need to like the characters. They don't show much backstory, so you have to rate the characters as the appear in the thick of it. John is likable enough, but Jane is just a bitch. And the ending was just abrupt. Some funny scenes and some cool explosions, but it's all done quite lazily.

Oo.. Forgot Jackie Brown. Watched that last night.

3.5/5 I liked this movie. It's no Pulp Fiction, but it's still a really smart. Pam Grier is awesome and can handle going head to head with Samuel L. Jackson. Everyone else is great too. De Niro is funny as hell, with his mannerisms and semi-mumbling. Unfortunately, one thing Pulp Fiction did right is that most of the minor characters were just as great as the main characters themselves. Jackie Brown doesn't have as many side characters as Pulp Fiction, but has problems with making them interesting. Nonetheless, there aren't many, so it's not that important. The movie still works and it works well.

Serenity - 5/5 - People said it was good and I agree. Good story, good characters, good flow. Summer Glau is purdy, too. The only real disappointment in this movie is that it didn't break even (although it may do thanks to big DVD sales) despite critics and regular movie goers alike all saying it was a great movie... which means it's unlikely there will be the sequel that I would love to see.

the most recent eh....

Volcano High 2/5: Live action version of the comic, yes it is one of those movies where you had to read the comic to understand it... which I didnt, you could also tell this was an extremely low budget film, but the corny parts are actually quite funny... also, the stunt extras and how they were made are amuseing for awhile... meh.

edit: the lighting in that movie is absolute torture.

So Close 5/5: Another Eastern eye filmy :) It is about ... actually, now I think of it, I dont even know why that.... anyway, this movie bassically involves conflictions between 3 woman (2 sisters and a detective), the story becomes quite dark and serious near the end... I enjoyed the sudden change of pace.

Kung Fu Hustle 4/5: Interesting way to combine a mindless fighting romp, with "guys goal is attempted to be achieved, but past gets in way", things that come into the story near the end so suddenly is its only problem, like me and my poor book writing constructs.

Cowboy Bebop 5/5: Edwards trippyness, and its an anime, what more do i feel like saying? (i donno, im tired).

I think he's supposed to be an American... via London and Sydney.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - 3.5/5 - It was pretty good, but it lacked any real kind of emotion, which is how I remember the book and the old BBC TV series. Polished, but kind of empty.

Transporter 2 - 3/5 - Not a good film, but rather enjoyable. Statham makes an excellent deadpan action hero.

The Descent - 5/5 - I just watched this again on DVD. It's such a good genre film. So dark! The friendship aspect makes it much more than a horror and the ending is great (I hope they keep it the same for American audiences).

The Constant Gardener - 4/5 - Admittedly, one of those marks is purely for Rachel Weisz, but this is a very good film. Could have done with a bit more editing, though.

Haven't watched too many movies, but I'll put the ones I have up, since this thread's been revived.

<b>From Dusk Till Dawn 4/5</b>
This movie flows along at a good pace, presenting a wonderfully crafted plot in the first half, leaving the action for the second half. It reminded me of Army Of Darkness and a lot of ways, and I enjoyed the humor. ("Titty Twister" bar, the warped faces on the characters that get transformed, etc.)

<b>Ghost Rock 2/5</b>
This movie sucked. It's a cheaply made Western/Martial Arts movie. The mayor is corrupt, and he's evil, and this guy shows up from out of town. I don't even want to post about it anymore.

Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Le - 5/5 - I don't think I've ever really seen a movie done quite like this one was. I was going to give a 4.5/5 but then I realised I can't really think of anything that was wrong with it. Very interesting. Don't forget to break out the subtitles, but it's well worth it.

Flightplan - Interesting move. Really strange though. Jodie Foster plays a good part - seeing as it was a really hard role to play. All through the movie you think you've solved it - but then something happens to make you think otherwise. It keeps you guessing. I'll give it a 3.5/5.

Harry Potter - Considering I have never read a HP book or watched a HP movie before, I was really surprised at how much I really enjoyed the film. I'll give it a 4/5. Very entertaining to watch.

Narnia: Pretty good. Reminded me a little of LoTRs. 4/5
Kung Fu Hustle: Fucking loved it. 5/5

-Narnia: LWW - 4/5 - Kicks the sh*t out of LoTRs... Pretty damn entertaining.

-The Island - 4/5 - Damn... this movie rocks. Probably tied with The Rock as Bay's best movies. I'm so sad that it flopped so hard... I think the marketing kinda sucked for it.

-Duel to the Death - 2.5/5 - Average old school Chinese martial arts action movie... ending was dumb.

21 Grams - Given that I had no idea what to expect, as with most movies I download (it's far more fun that way), this movie was very... different. I quickly caught on to the fact that the story was not being protrayed crono_logically, but I have to say that it did roll out quite nicely overall. Having said that, I figured out most of what happened before it happened, which didn't help things, making me wish I could skip scenes every now and then. 3.5/5
Garden State - I actually really liked this movie, mostly for the acting. The girl in the movie reminded me very much of my cousin at certain times, and my cousin rocks, so that's cool. But yes, I would say that this movie, while not an epic or anything on a grand scale, is quite simply a good movie. 4/5.
Psycho - I'd seen this before but forgotten everything but the obviously famous shower scene, so figured I'd see it again. Still, I found it fairly boring at times and was wanting it to end, never the sign of a good movie. 2.5/5.
Lawrence of Arabia - Wow, it really is long, isn't it? xD A class movie. There are some things I wish went differently in it, but at the same time, it's just what made the movie after all. Very well done, though, and deserving of it's status as one of the greats of all time. 4.5/5

Uh... recent films...

Flightplan - 4.5/5

Most recent film I saw, and I thought it was great. Layered plot, great acting, especially from Jodie Foster, and it was hard to see what was coming. What I originally though was happening turned out to be wrong, and I like unpredictable films. And Sean Bean is love.

King Kong - 5/5

Bloody fantastic.

That is all.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 3.5/5

While I did enjoy it and feel that is was better than its predecessors, I still think the kids aren't very good actors. I don't particularly like the Harry Potter films, to be honest - the books are far superior.

Dawn of the Dead (2004 version) - 4/5

I saw this recently, and it terrified me. Hey, most horror films do, but this one made me so paranoid. xD It got straight into the story with no silly, boring beginning, and it had me on the edge of my seet all the way through.

Well, I was practically falling asleep in my seat. It livens uptowards the end but the beginning is just deadly. I was out numbered and really didn't want to watch it. 1/5

Just Friends
Again, I wasn't particulary excited to see this movie, and sat on the 2nd Row getting a headache and sore eyes didn't help that one bit. Its a decent film but definatly a Chick Flick, and as Im not really that girly found it quite boring.

The Cell - 3.5 for this one. 3/5 for being an average decent movie with some entertainment value and an extra 0.5 for the obscure environments when they were in each other's minds, which I found very well done.

The Woodsman - Wow, this one really makes you think in an ...odd kind of way. A simply amazing quality of acting by Kevin Bacon. This movie certainly made me think, though. I'd give it 4/5 or possibly 4.5/5.

Taxi Driver - I think this was a pretty overrated film after watching it - I don't think it's one of the greatest films of all time. However, it was alright. One of those "had it's moments" films for me. I'll give it a 3/5.

I have Vertigo, It's a Wonderful Life, Sunset Blvd, Buying the Cow, Glory Daze and Hotel Rwanda downloaded now, so hopefully I'll have ratings for those within the month.

Fun with Dick and Jane
3/5

Funny and entertaining, but I expected a little more from a Jim Cairey film - escpecially as the film was produced by him aswell as him playing the main character.

House of Wax
3/5

I was actually really suprised by this film, I thought it was going to be another really badly made teenage movie, but it wasn't really bad at all. Parts of it were too unrealistic for my liking though, and that was its main downfall. Entertaining to watch though.

Hide and Seek
4/5

Great film, I think. Its really interesting and psychological and keeps you entertained throughout even if you're not interested in that sort of thing. Includes twists to keep you guessing.

Saw
4.5/5

Not a recent film, but I only just recently wached it. I loved this film. Only one part in the whole thing let me down. It's really thrilling and entertaining and keeps you thinking throughout the whole thing. Overall I was really pleased by it. ^__^

It's A Beautiful Life - 3/5. The 'old movie' factor may work against it with me, but having said that, I've seen some old movies I thought were brilliant so I don't think that's it. I think it was a good message, a decent plot and all that... but overall I was just never really entertained by it all, I never got into it. You can have wonderful acting, script, plot, themes, whatever... but if you can't connect with the viewer or at least get them really into the movie, then you're missing something as far as I'm concerned. But yeah, for a movie noted as one of the best of all time, I was disappointed.

Final Destination 3
3/5

I went to see this today. I haven't seen the other two yet, but it turned out I didn't really need to, to grasp the concept of the film. I liked it, but it was a little predictable. If you like blood & gore and thrillers then this is a good movie to see. Not having seen the other two yet, I'm not sure whether it will be a let down to people who have. :)

The Producers (1968 version)

Had never seen it before, but read a synopsis of the plot and had an urge to buy it. Went out and bought the DVD and loved it. Not a laughing from start-to-finish thing, but definitely has some quality stuff in there, if only for the line:

"Don't be stupid, be a smarty. Come and join the Nazi Party."

Though admittedly, the entire opening scene of Springtime for Hitler was brilliant.

I watch an average of one movie a week.

November: 4/5
Saw this a while ago. It keeps your mind going even after you've watched the movie. "Rewatch" is needed in most cases, if people have the time. Not 5/5 because it confuses the audiance too much at the beginning and only has them going "ohhh so that's what it mean..." after the movie is over.

Flightplan: 4.5/5
Not 5/5 because I probably won't watch it again for a very long time (you know, "rewatch" value). The turn of events was quiet surprising yet, it was one of the things that I actually expected to happen. Maybe I just ruin my movie experience by trying to think of "what will happen next".

The Excorcism of Emily Rose: 2/5
Kudos for making me sleep in someone else's room that night! But it didn't give me the reaction I expected to get from watching. The special effects were good, but that's probably all that's good about it. The story was pretty boring. I found myself not being able to wait for it to finish.

Tristan + Isolde - A romance movie that guys can watch, 'cause it has swords and fighting and all that stuff. I quite liked it - something different to most other movies I've seen lately. They're quite right in saying it's on par with Romeo + Juliet, definitely the same kind of story. Nothing hugely spectactular but I just can't really think of anything that was wrong with it. 4.5/5.

Hotel Rwanda - Oh man, that was pretty heavy stuff. It's like a Schindler's List movie in the way of "one man does everything he can to save as many as he can in a dire situation", only this time it's in a country that so few people knew about, and the first world generally didn't care about. Some parts were pretty intense and, well, for lack of a better word, I'll say 'heavy' again. I'll give this 5/5, actually.

Doom - Okay, that was totally not Doom. It was like the writers of Resident Evil wrote the script. To be fair, it's better than a lot of other video game movies, but still... if you're looking for a good sci-fi movie, don't watch this. It isn't frightening in any way either. The special effects are there but generally put to the side in favour of concentrating on the characters or the story, which some might say is good but in this case it really isn't. The only redeeming part of this movie is the end of it all when it gets a bit more into it's video game roots - sort of like the writers were saying "Yes, we admit it, this is just another half-decent video game movie and if you got this far expecting something epic, you're stupid, but hey, you probably watched this for Doom fan service and here we go!" 1.5/5

Show Me Love: 5/5
A coming of age film about two girls who fall in love, if it had been a British or American movie it would have been tacky and immature, thankfully it was a Scandinavian film and it was awesome. Well writen and acted, if you want to watch a good teen movie, watch this.

Runaway Train: 4/5
I taped this ages ago but only just watched it, it's from the eighties and is about two convicts who escape jail and board a runaway train, hench the title. That's about it, it sounds boring but was a decent movie. Well acted with some good dialogue.

Ice Age: 5/5
My favourite of all those video animations, i watched it on tv with my little cousin, i thought i'd hate it but it was brilliant, i'm taking her to see the second one soon, although it's me who really want's to see it. :D

Yeah I saw that about a year ago, and thought that was really, really well done, and even had me on the verge of tears a few times. Not many movies can do that to me.
I'm trying to watch the movies nominated for best picture in the recent Oscars. So far, I've seen

Crash- Great movie, unorthodox method of filming, worked great though. Deserved the Best Picture Oscar it received. 5/5

Good Night, and Good Luck- Again, unorthodox method of filming, but again, worked. It was a little short, and the viewer is left wanting more insight into Ed Murrow, his character is not explored as much as I would have liked. Other than that, great movie, Clooney proves he can direct, as well as act. 4/5

Garden State: 5/5
This film really moved me, and thats saying something. I felt the acting was excellent (Special note to Natalie Portman who after the Star Wars movies I really didn't like, but she surprised me) Zach Braff proves that a little indie gem can be more fufilling and visually arresting than most blockbusters. Some of the visuals in this film were great. As for comedy, it's slow building (unlike Scrubs) but when you accept it, you giggle away, accepting the film's world with joy and happiness. This film made me smile.
What more can you ask?

Secretary: 4/5
Another indie flick. This time, Maggic (Sister of the more famous Jake) stars as the title character. A deep expolration of the themes of love and the physical side of passion. Contains some scenes of a sexual nature which are like the sides of a coin; some will find them distasteful, some will accept them as part of human nature. What's more important, its is a real treat for those who enjoy their humour black.

The Transporter 2- 4.5-5

Great action movie with a plot that was interesting but had been done before. The whole bad guy has something that can kill alot of people now stop him plot. Jason Statham IMO is right up there with Jackie
Chan as far as doing your own stunts go. Fire house scene was awesome.

Memoirs of a Geisha- 4-5

It was an awesome look into one part of the Japanese culture of the late 20's, 30's, and then early 40's. I love everything about this movie but the only thing is that it drags on and on. It's hard for the average person to sit down and appreciate this movie

Interesting movie from the Coen Bros. Definetly not their best work, but interesting and unorthodox none the less.

Chrisitan Bale went MAJOR skinny here. Too bad the film doesn't quite deliver as much as I wanted it to. I felt it was a bit stupid how they just ride everything off as "He was just imagning things", although the style used was pretty cool.

Shimotsuma Monogatari (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416220/): 4/5
Random Japanese live action (with a few animated scenes) film recommended to me on IRC a while back. It's about a Lolita (as in, the dress style) who ends up becoming friends with a biker (IT'S A SODDING MOPED!) chick. Doesn't really sound like much, but it seriously had me laughing like mad in how utterly bizarre it all is, especially in the side characters Unicorn and Inobe-san, as well as all the gratuitous headbutting. Gotta dig that. It's bizarre, it's funny, but the first twenty minutes are weird as hell; while it works out in the end, the beginning makes it tough to stick with the film - bear it out and you should have some good laughs.

King Kong (the new one) - If you're like me, and...
1) Are able to get really, really into a movie,
2) have a strong love for animals, and
3) have a fear of unstable heights
...then you might not want to watch this movie. 4/5. It only doesn't get 5/5 because, well, the acting could have been a fair amount better and there were some bits that just didn't seem like they were needed.

EDIT: Oh, and there were certain characters that I just felt were lacking, such as Driscoll and many of the ship crew. The only real stars in this film as far as I'm concerned were Naomi Watts (Ann Darrow) and Andy Serkis (Kong). Kretschmann did alright as Captain Englehorn, and the ship crew were alright too, but in the end they just seemed wasted as the story left them behind.

This is utter unwatchable trash, I found the moive on TV, and I have lost the time spent watching the filth where I could've done something more fun, like stapling my ear to my big toe. Dull plot, the comedy was awful, it was just horrid in every aspect.

Spectacular production values, great acting, great characters, great music, same great story, and true to the book. Though I've read the book many times, so I can't help but feel a little bored, knowing whats going to happen. For me, that's the biggest flaw for novel-based movies, but I'm probably one of the only people who has this problem and it's not that big of a problem for me either. Good film.

Saw II I was surprised to see it play out in a different format to the original. By changing the style of story-direction, it made it a better film. Some shockingly bizzare deaths. Stupid fun. 3/5

Silent Hill Had the essence of the games. Some scary moments and faithful nods. Suitably disturbing in style. Characters better fleshed then thought. Silent Hill:
1.) VERY suspenseful...they really managed to get the essense of the game, as well as several tributes.
2.) Acting was....passable....but who dgoes to a horror movie for the acting, anyways.
3.) Storyline is fairly smooth, and has a good flow, and relates faairly well to the game.

On the negative side:
1.) The nurse scene? I was expecting "Thriller" to start playing.

Punch Drunk Love: This was a really weird yet totally great film. I thought Adam Sandler did a really good job here, definetly shows he has some acting talent. You get this sense of paranoia and frustraition when you watch, which was obviously intended and works very well. This is probably my second favorite PT Anderson film. 4.5/5

Incredibly intense and well-made film. I doubt that there are gonna be many people who will say that they "enjoyed" this movie. It's emotional, it's intense, it's powerful but it's not enjoyable to relive 9/11 in such a realistic manner.

There is so much reality in the movie, it feels like you're watching a documentary of the day as it happened rather than watching a film. A good chunk of the people portraying the men and women in the air traffic control centers and in the military command center are played by the people who were actually there that day. And the confusion and shock and horror are almost tangible.

I spent most of the last half hour crying and the ending was just... deafening.

I give the movie a 5/5.

A Bittersweet Life ~ I love Asian cinema because the movies can make you think and dont need loads of dialogue to move the story along. This one was excellent, reminded me alot of Oldboy, which I love.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ~ Wow! Ive read most of the book, but I had to see this cause I love Jack Nicholson. Brilliant piece of filmworking, but the ending?! Upset me, yet powerful.

Sybil 5/5

This (for those who don't know) is about a woman, Sybil, who has multiple personality disorder (it's not schizophrenia). And it mainly shows her trying to cope with this disorder by going to her therapist who tries to find out what happened to her in the past to make her this way. Sybil has 16 different personalities that are showcased in this movie. Each of them being aspects of Sybil's real persona. This film is very deep and if you don't think you can handle some gruesome things I suggest you not see this. Although it doesn't show alot the story is very powerful. Sally Field plays Sybil(as well as her 16 personalities) and she's wonderful in each character she plays. I think each actor in this film were exceptionally good. Especially young Sybil too. Her facial expressions make you really feel for Sybil. I reccomend going to pick this up (if you can find it).

P.S. It's also based on a book called Sybil which was written by a woman who went under the false name Sybil. She wrote it with her therapist. I haven't read it, but people tell me it's very good and it has details about "Sybil's" life.

Oldboy - Wasn't quite expecting the film to be so...violent. It's definetly kind of disturbing when you think of the subject matter at hand (incest, father/daughter relationships). Dazed and Confused: 4/5 (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106677/))
I guess this is a bit of a cult film, right? A teen comedy set in the 70's with a highly impressive soundtrack (reportedly accounting for an entire sixth of the budget), it's basically the kind of school life I'd have liked to have, which I think is a big part of why I like the film. It just has a really cool feel to it, and plenty of good laughs.

Jisatsu Saakuru/Suicide Club: 1/5 (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312843/))
Apart from a few set pieces (including the hilarious opening), this japanese horror film fails miserably. It's not scary, it's not funny, it's commentary on the idol culture of Japan is terrible and it's just plain shoddy overall.

Better than Chocolate: 3.5/5 (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168987/))
Bearing in mind that this film is actually quite adult in its depiction of sexuality, BtC is still the funniest film I've seen in a long while. My biggest issue with it though is how it spreads its focus upon too many characters, not really giving the main lesbian relationship time to develop. If you take it as just a comedy it's pretty good, but I was hoping for a bit more on the romance side.

I had heard both good and bad things about this film, but truth be told it was pretty boring. Adam Sandler, while not as wired as he might be in one of his comedies, is still pretty much Adam Sandler. Tea Leoni is a little too melodramatic, but at least Paz Vega is nice to look at. 2 1/2 out of 5

Subway

One of Luc Besson's first movies, but still a great one. It's a movie that runs for about 90 minutes, and 90 % of the movie takes place in the metro, which sounds dull, but it really isn't. Subway is a nice story about loneliness, love, and it features some nice typical 80s sounding music, plus it is in French ;) Actors in it are for example Christopher Lambert and Jean Reno.

Man this depressed the crap out of me. I guess watching this after the upbeat Better than Chocolate was maybe a mistake XD Anyway, Mulholland Dr. is yet another one of David Lynch's bizarre mysteries, this time focusing on the smoke and mirrors of Hollywood. Whilst confusing, the film does actually reach a definite conclusion, and the getting there is done pretty well, but I can't help wondering what this would have been like if it had indeed continued on as a TV series as was originally planned. Still, it's worth watching this just to see that fuck Billy Ray Cyrus getting his arse kicked.

Advent Children - I loved it. Beautiful graphics, nice voice-overs and I enjoyed the story-line. It was a realistic as a look into what the future would have held for the characters of FFVII. I liked the suttle meetings of Aeris and Cloud in AC. I wish though they had expanded the story out of Midgar a bit more though. I would have liked to see a lot more of other towns/places in FFVII like a closer look at the City of the Ancients.

Daredevil: 3/5 (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318627/))
This film surprised me by being quite enjoyable. I was expecting something terrible (I mean, Ben Affleck AND Jennifer Garner? *shudders*), but the basic plot was decent and I really liked Colin Farrel's hammy performance as Bullseye. Since I'm not really a comic-book fan, I've no idea how accurate it was to the source material, which probably helped my enjoyment of the film.

Resident Evil: 4/5 (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120804/))
On the back of Daredevil, Resident Evil is another film I found far better than I expected. I'll admit, I never liked the first RE game and have since steered clear of the rest, though apparently the story to this is original, so again, I've not been troubled by that aspect. The beginning to the film is a bit ropey, and the deaths of half of the characters were a bit too cursory for my liking, but I really liked the interplay of characters. Now I think about it, the film was probably quite bad really, but I just enjoyed it so much, so I'm not complaining XD

Resident Evil: Apocalypse 1/5 (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318627/))
After watching the first film, I decided to download the sequel, hoping for something just as good. And this isn't even close. The only enjoyable character in teh entire film is Milla Jovovich's Alice, returning from the original, while all the new cast look woefully out of place, even the Crazy Black Man™. I'd complained about the arbitrary deaths in the first film, but at least they made you give a crap about the characters there; in this, they get no screen time to endear themselves to you, with the focus being spread way too thinly amongst them. Basically, it was all completely and utterly pointless, and a waste of two hours.

I'd not actually seen this before, and what with the third film being in the cinemas right now, I thought it might be a good time to watch it. To be honest though, I didn't think it was all that good. The fight scenes were decent enough, there were some good laughs, some character development (though not much) and the plot made sense, but still, it just seemed to lack any sense of pacing, instead throwing one contrivance after another at the viewer. I guess it just kind of lacked any human touch, whilst the first made me give a crap. As a sequel, I guess it can get away with that, but still, it just irks me =S

Wow.

There are a few very good reasons why this film was handed the Best Picture hardware back in 2005, and their names are Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman.
