Ripping Off FF.. or Vice Versa!

Have you ever played an RPG or any other game where one of the characters remids you of an FF character? I have been a fan of the Suikoden Series for quite a while and I was playing with Photoshop when a friend mentioned this:

Although this isn't an rpg, I once played this gundam battle assault game for the PS1 and this giant green gundam reminded me so much of the emerald weapon. And for those who played part one not the huge green one with about 8 legs. The one thats in the base...

How about His Dark Materials and FF8?


1) Lee Scoresby is Irvine Kinneas.
proof: Uses a gun, is western (texas+cowboy clothes), isn't from the same place as the rest of the rest. Plus he's tall and lanky.

2) Stanislaus Grumman/John Parry is Laguna Loire.
proof: Calm, intelligent, formerly an explorer, gone for a long time from his family, famous to people that know him, seems to have lead two lives (the explorer and teh shaman, and the president and the solider).

3) Will Parry is Squall Leonheart.
proof: Son of the explorer, physical injury that sets him apart (but others share it) (scar across the forehead, missing fingers on hand), specialized weapon(gunblade, subtle knife), "differnt"

4) Mary Malone is Quistis Trepe
proof: Intellectual, lectures the explorer's son, older, more mature, a bit love-lorn.

5) Lyra Bellacqua is Rinoa Heartilly
proof: Love interest of the explorer's son, Important, smart, impatient. Always making up plans. Has abilities that others don't, but not always of her own merit, and she might lose them one day, but there are ways to emulate them. (sorceress magic/ability to read the aleitheometer)

6) Lord Asriel is General Caraway
proof: The father of the love interest. Is not particularly nice to his daughter. Cares for her, but it's not very obvious. Very important, with rank, commands respect, not close to daughter.

7) Mrs. Coulter is Julia Carawar
proof: Um. Love interest's mother? Wife of important man, once loved another. Rich, glamorous, famous, probably cares more for her daughter than her father does.

8) Roger is Seifer
proof: Love interest's companion before meeting explorer's son. Lost for dead. Redeemed/revenged/revisited/chased down. (roger is found in the world of teh dead, seifer is able to be happy with his friends fishing) Replaced by explorer's son.

9) Witches are Sorceresses
proof: They do magic no one else is able, but they are imitable. Physically different. Live longer.

10) Serafina Pekkala is Edea Kramer
proof: A person of the type mentioned in 9). Not a villain. Queen of the type of 9)

11) Fadar Coram is Cid Kramer
proof: Person that would love 10). Very close. Provides a little bit of guidance for love interest. Saved person from 10)

12) Iorek Byrnison is Zell Dincht
proof: Not one for subtleties. Brute strength. Follows love interest's directions. (iorek obeys lyra, zell does rinoa's errands for her, like squall's ring getting copied)

13) Will's Mother is Raine Loire
proof: Wife of the explorer. Doesn't live to see him return. Is alone. More or less dead.

14) Explorer's son isn't quite fixed on the idea of having the love interest as a . . . love interest, but she's perfectly comfortable with him.

Probably Square took the ideas of the characters from there....... :p Then they probably added Selphie,Fujin,Raijin,etc.

I cant remember what game it was for the life of me but I recall seeing some bearly known RPG on the PS1 at a friends house that had a character who had a rather peculiar (sp?) respemblance to Kefka.

Also, I remember a character in the Dreamcast fighting game Powerstone (Great game) that had a pilot character that looks a lot like Cid Highwind. I think his name was Ace? That or some other typical pilot name

Cloud was a direct rip off from Sanosuke Sagara, one of the Charachters in Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin manga and anime series. Why? Well, first of all, Rurouni Kenshin (in manga form) came out in Japan in 1992, about 4 years before FF VII. Second, both characters have a bad attitude, spiky hair and use (or in Sanosuke's case, used) a Huge Forkin' Sword (the Ultima Weapon is an almost exact duplicate of Sanousuke's Zanbatou). Both also saw some of their closest 'family' (adopted in the case of Sanosuke) killed before their eyes and are bent on getting revenge against those who were responsible.

1- I can think of 900+ characters from animes, games, and movies that match with Irvine. And they aren't rip-offs. And most of them are developed, unlike Irvine. INCLUDING LEE.

2- It's not like the double-life idea is original. Same case of above.

3- Will has true feelings. They are not forced. Unlike Squall, that is thw worst FF lead ever. And Will's "scar" (he loses 3 fingers o_o') was made from a sacrifice Will made to have Subtle Knife. Squall's scar is from ghis gay lover, Seifer.

4- Quistis wasn't destined to tempt the new Adam and Eva. Oh, something HDM has and FF8 doesn't. Whee.

5- Lyra is the new Eve. Plus, she has is a innocent 10 year girl (unlike Rinoa) with a strong, good personality (unilke Rinoa) and she befriends with everyone (unlike Rinoa).

6- Asriel killed her daughter's best friend and tried to kill her afterwards. Wow, he cares about her a lot. XD

7- Was Julia a crazy bitch that cut the children's daemons, making them sad and stuff, and killed them in the end?

8- Seifer wasn't a little scared guythat does absolutely NOTHING in the books, being a mere plot device.

9- Live longer =/= Immortal. And they use magic, WOW! NOTHING has magic nowadays! It is a totally underused thingy! XD

10- She isn't the villain and she is a queen. See number 1, please.

11- Yeah, they are look-alike. And so what? Squall looks alike Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing. And FFVIII is not a rip-off from Wing. FFVIII may be bad but not THAT bad. XD

12- Zell is a polar bear, that only cares about honor. WOW. And in the middle of game, thanks to Squall, he gets a good heart. WOW WOW.

13- UH? Raine has Ellone, you know! T_T And she is not bipolar! And her soul isn't devoured bu specters! o_O

14-
One: This thing happens a lot.
Two: Squall/Rinoa is forced and lame. Will/Lyra is not.

Overall, they are magic and explorers, and so what. The storyline is TOTALLY DIFFERENT. And unlike FFVIII, His Dark Matterials doesn't have plotholes. XD

I wouldn't say that. Sanosuke actually has a personality, and is quite different from Cloud. The only simularities are the massive sword and the revenge bit, which is hardly evidence of a direct rip-off, especially since revenge has been a theme in many mediums for centuries untold.

Very first time i saw Cloud from VII i thought he was a rip of Gohan super Saiyan from the DBZ Cell Saga (where he fights cell at the end BEFORE he turns ss2). Blonde spikey hair was almost exactly the same, purple outfit (or dark blue for those who dont like the idea). Yeah............think ive made my point.
