View Full Version : Which anime should I watch next?

Well I just finished Wolf's Rain, and though I was hoping and praying that
it wouldn't be utter , my prayers went completely unanswered. What
an awful show.

Anyway, I'm wondering what anime to watch next. My two main choices
are between the first season of Naruto and Samurai Champloo, I'm leaning
towards Samurai Champloo. But I'm considering other possibilities. I'd list
the animes I've seen but there are too many and I'd probably miss some,
so if you have any suggestions, or a favorite of the two above, feedback
would be awesome. :)

Though I've never actually seen Naruto, it's one of the most popular animes, whereas Samurai Champloo was created by the person who created Cowboy Bebop. My suggestion is to get Naruto and just watch Champloo on Adult Swim.

Optium

Well I have both of them, but maybe I will watch the first eps of Champloo
and then watched the dubbed ones on [as]. Good call.

I'd say go with Samurai Champloo. I've never been a fan of Naruto, although I'll admit I ever gave it a fair chance. But Samurai Champloo is more up my alley. I love the way it's drawn/animated. I'd watch it just for that. xD That's what I would do, anyways. But SB's idea isn't too shabby either. ;)

Why, thank you! (^_^)

You could also just watch 'em both at the same time: Naruto on DVD/VHS(whichever format you have it in) and Champloo on Adult Swim, as Cartoon Network didn't alter it at all, save for the great dubbing.

Samurai Champloo... its just fking great.

I've not seen much of Shamploo and it didn't impress me. Naruto reminds me a lot of Dragon Ball Z but it actually isn't too bad, it's amusing at some points but seems more for the OMFG COOL! factor than anything else.

Pretty sure Champloo got cancelled on adult swim- at least thats what I heard.

Shoeberto
06-27-2005, 01:05 AM
Highly highly highly doubt that. It's really popular and it's got a great spot in the lineup.

If they said it in one of the bumps, chances are they're messing with you. Like when ATHF got "cancelled."

I believe Champloo has always ranked somewhere in the top 3 for Adult Swim Saturdays. I doubt they would cut it halfway through.

I would go with Samuri Champloo out of the two you listed. I also recommend Gundam Seed Destiny. It is still airing and are at episode 36 right now. So far it has been really good but there is still time to drop off and screw it all up as many have said happened with the original Gundam Seed.

I hear nothing but bad stuff about Wolf's Rain. I only saw the ending and I liked the ending to it. I like a vauge ending that makes you figure it out for yourself but not completely fucked to the point where it makes next to no sense because they didn't even explain enough of the core story(like Evangelion).

Optium

The thing about Wolf's Rain is that it's actually a pain to watch. 30
episodes of them travelling toward paradise with close to no action, some
drama but usually minor, and extremely brief action when there is any at
all. So I didn't really like watching it after the first few episodes, but I said
I'm not going to judge it until the end, because the entire series seems to
be a load of rising action, and there will be an awesome climax. Turns
out there was a pretty good fight during the last episode, but instead of
focussing on it they focus on a girl getting up off the ground for 10 seconds
while you can hear the wolves fighting in the background. What the hell.
I don't care if it's artsy or more dramatic, it sucks. So anyway, the ending
was a flop and if you were to add a few giant robots you'd have the same
ending as Evangelion (as in the End of Evangelion, not the last 2 episodes
haha).

I(and I know Raven Nox stands beside me on this) suggest Noir. It's by the makers of .hack//sign, it has some of the best animeated and choraeographed fights in anime history, and the plotline is intriguing, as are the characters.

I don't know if you're just trying to pick between those two, but I'll list what I consider to be the best and most worthy of your time.

Cowboy Bebop
RahXephon
FLCL
Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy

If you've seen all of those, go for Samurai Champloo. Shinichiro Watanabe is amazing.

Bastard, Slayers the TV version not the movies season 1 2 and 3, Anything by Miazaki, Record of Lodoss war, Oraphein, Ruroni Kenshin Inuyasha and Ghost in the shell stand alone complex are all stunning animes.

Judging from your dislikes and favorites, I would recommend to you absolutely anything unoriginal and mainstream. Stick to the anime section at Wal-Mart and you won't go wrong -- you'll love anything you find there. Maybe .hack//SIGN, or the Tekken movie.

Lionx
06-28-2005, 12:33 PM
First i would say..(all subbed of course)

Fruits Basket
Full Metal Alchemist
One Piece
Gash Bell(or Zatch's bell for toonami)
Gravitation
Gundam Seed Destiny
Loveless
Genshiken
Kujibiki Unbalance OVA
Arc the Lad

if you cant get any of those then Samurai Champloo ..then Naruto..Naruto is a little overrated IMO. Need torrents? Boxtorrents work, or try mIRC.

Optium
06-28-2005, 05:18 PM
Yeah, I got them from boxtorrents. I've seen many of the animes listed
here. I've heard that Lodoss War is real good, so I might check that out too
actually. I watched the first episode of Naruto a while ago and wasn't
really impressed. After watching Wolf's Rain I don't want to be let down
again so I probably won't be watching it. Especially since there are like 7
seasons. Germ, I'm glad--if not skeptical--that you know what my likes
and dislikes are, but instead of bashing a taste that I have when you really
have no idea what it entails, why not suggest something and thereby not
be a complete waste of space in this thread?

I don't know why I didn't recommend it before, but Kikaider: The Animated Series. Unfortunately, the 20 something episode series costs $50-60. But I'm still getting it because I love that series to death. It's extremely dark, gritty, and balances out a great plot and loads of great fight scenes.

Full Metal Alchemist: This is probably the best anime in existence. It equals out comedy, romance, action, adventure, story and molds them all into 1 perfect show. There has never, ever been a show that has made me think more than FMA.

o.O Didn't I? ...'kay, scratch even .hack//SIGN. And how about now wasting thread space with something that's done every other day? :P

On a slightly more serious note, if you haven't seen Full Metal Alchemist already, give it a shot. It's a fairly simple show, but has enough going for it to keep from being your typical mediocre CN anime.

Lionx
06-28-2005, 09:39 PM
First ten episodes are simple..i cant see anyone saying anything beyond 10 to be anything BUT simple..

I've heard that Lodoss War is real good, so I might check that out too.

No. No, no, no. I made that mistake a couple months ago; perhaps my opinion isn't valid because I only got to the fifth episode, but that's all I could take. It's a very porrly done series, in my opinion. However, if you still want to check it out, do NOT get it dubbed, at all costs. The English voice acting is one of the main reasons why I stopped watching it. But I think something was wrong with the subtitles as well....gah, I don't even remember.

But in my opinion, not a good idea.

Ahh...thanks for the suggestions. I'm checking out BECK now and I think
I've seen some of Kikaider before at my friend's house...but maybe I'm
thinking of something else. I'll check that out too.

I watched Berserk before Wolf's Rain and FMA before that. Both were
very good (though the ending of Berserk was ty...I have all the manga
though so I wasn't too heartbroken).

But Germ, I'd like to know something that's original and underground. Help

but maybe I'll have to settle with never knowing :\

Since you prefer action oriented anime I will give you some of my suggestions
Ghost in the shell:stand alone complex
Noir
Trigun
Hellsing
Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust(movie)
Scryed
Appleseed 2004(movie)
X tv
Ninja Scroll(movie)

Now some others
FLCL(action/comedy)
12 Kingdoms(Juuni Kokki)Action/drama
RahXephon action/drama
Voices of a distant star(Hoshi no koe) drama/romance with a few very good battles. It is a 25 minute ova

From the series that are still on Japanese tv i have heard that Bleach is also good although i have not seen any episode

I'd say you should go with Naruto or Trigun here are a simple outline of the series so basic it contains little of no spoilers {unless you purposely stare at your computer looking for them}
Naruto:
Uzumaki Naruto is an academy level ninja with no friends or parents, his teacher Umino Iruka is his parent figure, Naruto wants to become the best ninja in his village so he can get aknowledged by the rest of the village.

Trigun:
A famous outlaw by the name of Vash the stampede or the humanoid typhoon as he's called has 6,000,000,000 double dollars on his head Meryl Stryfe and Millie Thomson are sent out to find and keep him under surveleince though once they find him {though they don't know it's Vash at first} they find out Vash is a fun donut liking guy. Though Vash gets in many fights in this 27 episdoe anime.

Thanks for the list HIK, you seem to be right on because I've seen most of
those and liked them. I haven't seen Noir, s-CRY-ed, X TV or 12 Kingdoms.
The others I've seen all the way through except Stand Alone Complex
because what I saw of it wasn't that great and I wasn't a huge fan of
the original movie, and RahXephon which maybe I should check out again
because I don't really remember it.

Trigun was the first series I saw and I didn't think anything could beat it,
my friend let me borrow Bebop and I tried to watch it but only the first
half of each disc would work on my PS2, so I didn't see: Ballad of Fallen
Angels, Jupiter Jazz (1/2), or The Real Folk Blues (1/2). I gave it back to
him and said "yeah it was alright." Then I got a DVD player and watched
the entire thing and I was simply blown away. But yeah, Trigun was
amazing as well, Legato is probably my favorite villain of all time.

I still haven't seen Paranoia Agent but my sister watches it on [as] all
the time and she says it's good, so I'll probably watch that with her
next time it's on. Thanks for the suggestions all.

BECK is a great choice, the only down side to that is that the last two episodes basically cram the whooole second half of the story, which could have been an entire second season, into two damn episodes. It's extremely dissapointing and almost painful to watch. If I were you I would skip episodes 25 and 26 and just finish off the BECK story with the manga. Good, good stuff.

As for my suggestion, I fully and honestly recommend Yakitate!! Japan, I'm currently obsessed with it, probably as much as I was obsessed with BECK when I started it. It's up to 32 episodes and going strong, one of the better animes I've ever seen. It's hilarious, entertaining, educational, and just all around interesting. The characters are great and it's got me waiting for the next episode with high anticipation every week.

The best part about it is that it's about baking bread.

I'd go to 75. It's kind of worth watching on Adult Swim, but definitely NOT worth a penny from my pockets. The anime is 250+ episodes long, when it could have been 100. By episode 80, it feels like it's dragging on for the sake of existing. Just when you think they're about to defeat the big honcho, he creates clones of himself and/or mutates into a new form. This literally happens 5+ times within the first 100 episodes.
