Ok, how about this, whenever someone is banned a short and sweet note is left somewhere in their profile. Like "User was banned for: Posting an inapropriate picture" or "User was banned for: Too much spam"

This seems like a good idea, but it would be up to the admins because we can't manipulate profiles.

we do something like that at FG, or at least we used to. (We haven't banned anyone in about six months, so I suppose saying we still do is kind of stretching). But we gave mods the ability to edit profiles for exactly that reason, regardless ;p

You guys also obsess(ed) over banned members.

we used to, like... two years ago, until Jacques' self-humiliation convinced us that banned people weren't worth taking seriously. After that I can't remember anything that would qualify as an obsession other than Red Skull, and that's because he offended like, half the board.

If you start making permanent, public records of why people were banned, then you end up with a "name and shame" system. It inevitably looks mocking and vindictive, like some deliberate attempt to run these people into the ground behind their backs. That's not the image we're trying to foster here. When someone's banned, that's unfortunate, but we're not going to make ourselves look elitist and full of crap by going, "hahaha, you're GONE, but we're going to let everyone see just why your sorry hind got axed".
:)That sounds a bit negative, but it's the general reasoning behind the continuing choice not to keep a public note of bannings.

If anyone needs to know why someone was banned, they can contact a staff member via PM or something. This means we can have more fun coming up with zany excuses to cover up the fact that we just logged in as them, did something naughty and then banned their account for it.

To give us the sense that our opinions and ideas mean something. That is the purpose of this forum but of course our ideas and stuff mean about as much as a penny does to Bill Gates.

Just a thought, but isn't archiving threads like "My stupid LIFE!!!!!" and "me new website" the same thing?

Tell us how they screwed up so we don't go crazy trying to figure out what they did. Telling us what they did would give us an extra warning of what NOT to do. plzkthnx.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that what they did wrong was something that's in the rules. We don't just arbitrarily ban people, you get PLENTY of warnings to stop whatever it is you're doing. If they get banned immediately it's because they posted porn or because they just signed up, sent out a bunch of PMs advertising a site, and never posted.

It inevitably looks mocking and vindictive, like some deliberate attempt to run these people into the ground behind their backs..Just a thought, but isn't archiving threads like "My stupid LIFE!!!!!" and "me new website" the same thing?a valid point. Not that I look badly on the staff for doing that, mind you :D
This is some sort of liberal plot.
Editing profiles would also entail removing contact info, because it's probably not in either EOFF's or the banned member's best interest that the particularly vocal contingents of our user base go off haranguing folks for posting lewd cartoons of their beloved Aeris.
What i mean is, it seems like a lot of little detail work for not so much gain.

Indeed, as often the reasoning for their ban is not simple enough to fit into one sentence. We have our information and that's all that matters, if someone wishes to know why a member was banned, they can ask. Easy.

Something I personally wouldn't archive, but it seems people enjoyed them a lot, so what the hey.
