View Full Version : Happy 4th of July, America!

You young upstart colonists... what's it been, two hundred and twenty nine years now? Well, good for you! I mean sure, had you remained a British territory we'd probably still be in charge of the world, but ah well, you've only gone and made a pretty nifty country, all things considered.

So, don't worry about the rest of the world, and don't worry about foreign policy, at least not for the day, because you're a decent lot and you've got a decent system. Nobody's perfect, but at least you guys try and work for it.

Well, it's 6:48 where I am (California) so it's not close to Jly 4th for me, but happy 4th of July to you America! XD Seriously, it's not July 4th anywhere in America...

Yamaneko
07-04-2005, 02:50 AM
Oddly enough, July 4th, 1776 wasn't our day of indepedence. September 3, 1783 could be more accurately considered our independence day. Also, The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 2nd, 1776, and the British did not know about it until the following month.

Nontheless, July 4th is widely recognized, so I'll recognize it too. Happy b-day, USA. :)

Why not consider April 18, 1775, then, for the Shot Heard Around the World?

Yamaneko
07-04-2005, 03:20 AM
Because the British-American colonies were still under the control of the British at that time. The same goes for July 4th, 1776. A declaration of independence doesn't mean much if you don't act on it.

With Puerto Rico, there will be after we suck in Canada.

As i was saying, it's cooler to have 52 states than eleven provinces. Nothing about size or population. Just sheer numbers.

We don't have 52 states--we don't even have 50, if you factor in the "Commonwealths"...that's Virginia and Pennsylvania, and maybe New Jersey? We do, however, have more terrotories/provinces/etc.

This Fourth of July wasn't much better than my last one. Last time, I was in Iraq, and a bunch of us built a fire and cooked burgers and such, and lit off powder from .50-cal and M60 rounds. Those were our fireworks...well, those, and a couple 40mm flares from an M203... But with that, the guys made the whole thing...we had some good times, the guys in my platoon. Today, saw a little parade, played some games, went to a tiny little fair/carnival and saw my dad play (he plays bluegrass), watched some fireworks, went home.
