i believe the ending of this game would have been absolutly perfect, had there not been any extra fmv after the final credits, showing squall.
the ending would have left it up to the player to decide what happened to squall. the final picture of rinoa pointing up to the sky, the same way she did to squall when they first met, would have been the perfect last picture to end the game.
although it was nice to see squall smile in the end, i really would have liked it left up to the gamer.
any thoughts about this idea?

God no! We’re given very little closure on the ending as it is. Any less and most of the people who played the game would have gone insane!

Future Esthar probably could have made sense of it though.

That would have been fucking awful. No, really fucking awful. I hate endings like that, which is why I've never liked VII's ending. I take the time to play the thing and to invest my emotions and I want closure to the matter.

but its just too 'happy ending' like. youre right when u say that vii's ending was bad, but i just hated how it ended like any other game would.

Personally I like the way it was... specially because I believe everything points that the Ultimecia = Rinoa is true.
This way, at least, they had some happy time being together.

There are many things left open in FF8 even though.
So taking that out would be bad.
I love endings opened to thinking.

FF8 has one of the most complex and amazing storys in all FF's and also has quite arguably one of the best love storys(due to sqalls personality changes.)people who dislike FF8 have no good reason to do so because its just as good as all of the rest and the ending is one of my favourites.one thing i like about final fantasy is that you never ealy understand it until near to the the end and you gradually pick up info instead of a "bang! thats my mission. do it. game over."i have a least favourite FF but i like all of them.

Oh please don't make this into a fans of FF8 vs. Fans of all the other FFs. Please.

I thought the ending was absolutely perfect. No really, nothing could have made it better. If it would have ended with Rinoa pointing, I would have been like "WTF" is that, I want to see Squall again. Because he's the main character, and it's necessary to have that closure. It worked, in my opinion, for FF7, because of it's particular plot and atmosphere, but for FF8 that would have been a load of crap.

This is all in my opinion, though. As usual.

Why shouldn't it have had a happy ending?

They succeeded in their quest, and they should've gotten rewarded for it.

It was needed for Squall's personality, as may or may not have been influenced heavily by Rinoa, to come full-circle to show that he *could* truly care for others. It was the final test, so to speak.

Not showing the last bits would'ev been just as awful as Throne of Dravaris said.

Plus, the Garden party was cool ^_^

I do not believe the ending needed changes.

Ha, this is funny, because I didnt know that there was another fmv after the credits untill about 6 months later frim initially beating the game.
So I though squall was dead for a while, six months while, then to see him there with Rinoa, it was perfect.

No, the story was perfect frim beggining to end.

PLaying FFVIII, I just felt that it was a huge beautiful story and no matter where they would end the story, I would always get that feeling inside my stomach that just makes me know that I NEED MORE STORY!!!
However, I was generally happy with the ending and I did particularly like the shooting star thing.

No i think it's just fine. I figured he died or sumthin. I almost reset the game during the credits though so i could have missed it.

To put it this way, the way the FF8 story was set up, I doubt any other ending would have worked. But personally, I preferred the more open ending of FF7 anyway.

I'll be the first to admit that I was blown away by FF8 when I first played it, but I was young(er) and it was my first FF, so anything would have impressed to be honest. And while FF8's ending now has worn off more or less completely, I can still watch FF7's ending without being bored.

I loved the ending. I can't think of anyway to make it better. And Squall was finally happy in the end.

yeah to see that big smile on Squalls face at the end, I was like  realy good way to end the story, I wish Laguna could have settled down with Raine but at least he seemed happy being reunited with Elone. In fact if I was Laguna Id go for Quistis.

I think maybe they could have somehow showed us how Laguna was squall's dad because if you don't talk to Laguna and company in the ragnarok how else are you going to find out?

Sir Bahamut

You could reason your way to it through the Moombas calling Squall Laguna in the D-District Prison. However, most people tend to miss this implication, and don't think of it until after they've seen the conversations in Ragnarok, thereby concluding that Laguna is Squalls father.

but its just too 'happy ending' like. youre right when u say that vii's ending was bad, but i just hated how it ended like any other game would.

But some of the plot was a romance. It seems logical that it would have a "happily ever after" ending.
