The first time I played FF7 (Late 1999, early parts of 2000), I played with Cloud, Barret, and Cid, since they were the "guys" and all. When I replayed just recently (I think I started in... April, played on and off and beat it a few days ago), I decided to go with Cloud, Tifa, and Barret. I think they make a good trio - they've all been around since the beginning, Barret is fairly close to both Cloud and Tifa, and of course, it's always a good thing to have Cloud's girl by his side. :p I dunno, I just like the vibe those three give off. Hell, you can get kind of a character study of yourself just looking at who you chose for your FF7 party and why - my reasons this time around focused on everyone's interpersonal relationships instead of just choosing based on them all being guys. My reasoning has become deeper and girlier since the first time. :p

I always use two of the caracters i didnt use last time i played. But my best game that ive done just about everything in that i leave on the memory card consists of Cloud, Yuffie and Cid

Cloud, Tifa Vincent. Cloud being the meatshield Tifa being support magic and Vincent being offensive magic.

Cloud, Yuffie and Vincent. Cloud and Yuffie tied being the #1 strongest attackers in the game, and Vincent for healing and attacking.
Cloud and Yuffie make great healers as well. besides, Yuffie is also the only other character besides Aeris that has at least one healing limit break.

my party was cloud, tifa, and aeris UNTIL i got yuffie. then it was cloud, yuffie, and tifa. cloud is strong and pretty good in magic, yuffie can attack with great damage in the back row and is also pretty good in magic, tifa is a strong fighter with great limit breaks but is mediocre in magic.

Cid is curative magic, (I once made the mistake of putting all my curative materia with vin and then allowing him to use his limit break and in the end they all died) Vincent being summons and guns and offensive magic, and Cloud being the physical offensive.
