I'm surprised they would actually chav that word in the dictionary. *dies*I'm not. Dictionaries these days are always adding buzz words like that to try to appear "cool" and "with it". It's like they're trying to say "WE'RE NOT A BOOK FOR NERDY TYPE PEOPLE, HONEST!" :rolleyes2

I was angry (read: whining like a little girl) about this a while ago. Not because of Chav, because I can deal this that to a certain extent.

"Chavtastic" on the other hand...

Open-Dictionary.com is not the official dictionary, people.

And yes, the official one does put plenty of slang words in.

Slang is actually a very serious and expansive linguistic topic. Because slang terms are such dynamic, social, and even political phenomena, they offer a great deal of research opportunity and insight about language and its interaction with culture. You chavs.

I think whoever wrote that dictionary definition had sadly never encountered a 'real' Chav. It's not about the clothes (although so many people love to think it is i.e. 'The Sun') - it's more about the antisocial nature and primitive lines of thinking. If you see someone walking around in a shellsuit, this does not mean they're a Chav.

That's true...

What makes me edgy is also when English dictionaries take words from other languages (namely French, Yiddish and Russian) and add them as ordinary English words, not saying it's not an actual English word, nor specifying its origins.

It's not that surprising, since chav is a commonly used slang word (in Britain at least). It's the dictionary's job to include terms in common use, whether people think they're 'proper' or not.

If you see someone walking around in a shellsuit, this does not mean they're a Chav. That might be how you see chavs, but most people use the word to describe anyone in a Burberry cap, no matter what kind of person they are. So technically the dictionary has it right, even if it is an unfair generalisation.

That Little Britain picture! :D :D *dies*
Some chavs annoy me, a rare few are very canny from what I know. Shamefully, I once borderd on chavness *kills oneself* but now I'm... I don't know, I guess I'm surf/skate clothing wearing woman who listens to any music she desires :p
The dictionary is trying to make itself look good, so it puts swearwords and slang in and then kills the amusement by giving a very thorough description! :(
