I don't think it is, Parachutes can't open when they're that close to the ground.

It's called Base Jumping, and yes it is usually illegal. I think you can get special permission, but most just do it anyway, the chase being half the thrill. I'm not sure about if you can open a chute and be alright, but I think if it was already open and up then he should be fine.

Yeah, that's BASE jumping. It's really dangerous. I don't think you can do it from the Empire State Building, I'd think that the paracute would be too big.

People have been base jumping from buildings for years now. NYC is kinda huge, so there's bound to be sufficient room to manoeuvre.

The biggest risk with base jumping - whether you're doing it from a cliff, a building or a waterfall - is the wind. A miscalculation, or a sudden wind change, can blow you into the side of the structure you've just jumped off. A few have died because of this.

The top of the Empire State building is peanuts compared to the height a plane flies at. I guess its the publicity.

Some guy jumped the Great Wall of China the other day on a skateboard, three times. The last person to try to do that died, as with the last person to try doing it on a mountain bike.

Base jumping isn't anything new, although maybe doing it in an area as structure-crowded as New York City is.

You know what I bet? He'll jump off and then his parachute wont work, and everyone that hates him will start laughing. Next thing they know, he starts shooting web everywhere because he's really just a descendant of spiderman and he was waiting to catch them all off guard so he does and kills everyone and he has the last laugh.
