Yeah, it looks great, I've only played the first half hour of Prime1 and I really like the gameplay.

Dark turned off the safe zones and balls while the light beam enhanced it so that it was strong and enemies would die instantly if they touched it. Normal beam just turned on the safe balls. I am guessing the light/dark gun had the same effect as the light beam.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
07-29-2005, 04:02 PM
The difference is that the Light Beam makes the safe zones harmful to the Ing, but they're smart enough not to step inside their boundaries once they're activated, so you have to spring them on them. Meanwhile, the Annihilator Beam not only super-charges the safe zones but also makes them irresistable. Watching Ing charge directly into a super-charged safe zone and burn alive is one of my greater pleasures in playing MP2.

Lindy
07-29-2005, 04:13 PM
Nothing better than watching a Hunter Ing float hypnotically into a super-charged safe zone and explode in a cloud of dust.

I'll give it to the latter of you two, since the most enjoyable part was missed by Eddy boy.

Medi
07-30-2005, 03:01 PM
All that sounds complicated.

Lindy
07-30-2005, 06:58 PM
Not really.

Dark Beam + Safe Crystal = Pif, Safe Zone dies.
Light Beam + Safe Crystal = Womph, Safe Zone is powered up and all Ing who touch it go PUFFT into dark dust.
Annihilator Beam + Safe Crystal = Bamph, Safe Zone is super-charged and draws in nearby Ing who also just go PUFFT when they hit it.

edczxcvbnm
07-30-2005, 07:17 PM
I didn't know what the last beam did as I stopped using those by that point in the game.

Medi
07-31-2005, 03:10 PM

I guess not...

Lindy
07-31-2005, 03:12 PM
S'posed to be Kishly-kun's question.

Medi
07-31-2005, 03:21 PM
so in prime2 you don't have the regular beams? :( sad...

Lindy
07-31-2005, 03:25 PM
Nah, they work in similar ways.

The Dark Beam is akin to the Ice Beam, it freezes 'troids in the same way, it's relatively slow firing.

The Light Beam is akin to the Plasma Beam, fast firing and powerful, sets creatures on fire, but has a relatively short range.

The Annihilator Beam is akin to the Wave Beam, but not by much, it homes in, does insane damage and is generally booty kicking.

These are limited in usage by an ammo system, but it's not that bad, you just have to conserve your ammo like you would with missiles, which really isn't that much at all.

Medi
07-31-2005, 03:26 PM
oh, ok

Lindy
07-31-2005, 03:29 PM
The charge combos are totally different though.

The Dark Beam creates a slow moving black hole that sucks in all around it.

The Light Beam creates a slow moving massive energy ball of light which causes huge damage to anything it hits, especially Dark enemies.

The Annihilator Beam causes a massive Sonic Boom which instantly hits and massively damages anything it targets.

Just the charge combos take both missiles AND ammo, which can be a bit of a killer, especially with the Annihilator.

Medi
07-31-2005, 03:30 PM
Wow, that's really cool. Except that it costs ammo.

Lindy
07-31-2005, 03:32 PM
A lot of people were afraid of the ammo system, but it's really not a problem, only in extended boss battles can you even get close to running out, and even then it's only if you go very trigger happy and waste a lot.

You get 250 ammo total (after expansions), each shot takes 1 of a type, and charge shots take 10, as long as you don't spam fire you'll be fine.

Medi
07-31-2005, 03:33 PM
Now I really want a gamecube, and the Prime games

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-01-2005, 02:58 AM
Q: Out of Zebes, SR388, and Tallon IV, which two planets are in the same solar system?

edczxcvbnm
08-01-2005, 03:32 AM
I would go with Zebes and SR388 but I am probably wrong.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-01-2005, 03:43 AM
It's not Zebes and SR388.

Medi
08-01-2005, 04:19 AM
Zebes and Tallon IV?

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-01-2005, 05:01 AM
Right. Go ahead.

Medi
08-01-2005, 05:34 AM
Q: In Metroid Zero Mission, there is a time-attack mode. After completing the time-attack mode you recieve a code. What is the purpose of this code?

Lindy
08-01-2005, 07:04 AM
You can unlock the time attack mode without using GS codes now?

I'd assume it'd be to enter on some kind of official website to set your game time and stats up against other players in some kind of ranking.

Or maybe I've just been playing too much Ikaruga lately.

Either that, or it has no use at all because nothing has been implemented yet.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-01-2005, 07:14 AM
Open New Time Attack mode
To open Time Attack Mode in which you get a password for your clear time and percent, choose a file that has the green+yellow Samus symbol and hit the A button. When you see the 'Start Game' option, simply hit Up, Left, Right, then Down on the d-pad and 'New Time Attack' will appear.
Contributed By: Red ScarletIts only purpose was for an official contest that, unless I missed something, was only held in Japan. Worse yet, the best MZM speed-runners determined that the winners of the contest must have cheated to get the times they did. Cryin' shame.

Medi
08-01-2005, 03:57 PM
Yep, your turn Kawaii. The prize was a Metroid themed GBASP, I think.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-01-2005, 11:46 PM
Q: In Metroid Fusion, there is a power bomb tank that, with some tricky maneuvering, can be acquired well before the game actually wants you to have power bombs. (However, since the programmers were such jerks about "no sequence-breaking ever grrr," you can't actually use the bombs until you get the main power bomb "data download" as the plot dictates.) In what area is this tank located?

edczxcvbnm
08-02-2005, 12:21 AM
*please be right*

Norfair

Lindy
08-02-2005, 01:12 AM
Except Norfair isn't in Metroid Fusion.

Hmm.

Is it in TRO? The large room with a power bomb near the top, roughly in the center of the map. I think you can shinespark up to there, though I'm not sure.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-02-2005, 01:22 AM
No, it's not TRO...or Norfair.

Lindy
08-02-2005, 02:11 AM
The thing about Power Bombs is that they made it so that you need Power Bombs to get to them, either by setting the appropriate blocks, or those large X-Barriers.

You would have thought that would make things easier, since it'd have to be Expansions out in the relative open, but bugger me it doesn't.

...Oh!

Is it in SRX? The room near where you face the Charge Beam Core-X, you can Speed Boost and then Shinespark through the room to get to the Expansion?

That's the only one I can really think of that you can get without Power Bombs and with items before Power Bombs.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-02-2005, 02:19 AM
That actually sounds plausible, but I haven't tried it myself, and as far as I know, the one I'm thinking of is the only one you can get early.

Hint: it involves Shinesparking through an X barrier.

Lindy
08-02-2005, 02:23 AM
Would it be the X-Barrier in ARC that covers the third Power Bomb you should get? The one off to the right of the second-largest room that is relatively central on the map.

Dash along, stop, turn into a ball, jump and roll through the gap next to the barrier, stand up and shinespark through it.

At least, that's the only X-Barrier I can think of that you could Shinespark through before you get the Power Bombs themselves, and I have vague memories of getting a Power Bomb expansion early.

If that's not it, I surrender.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-02-2005, 02:28 AM
Okay, it's the tank in the room across from the elevator leading to the Etecoons and Dachoras in Main Deck.

Q: Is Samus a boy or a girl???

Lindy
08-02-2005, 02:31 AM
Wait wait wait...

How do you get up enough boost to shinespark through that barrier?

Do you head through the corridor one level down and then do a diagonal Spark?

XxSephirothxX
08-02-2005, 02:36 AM
Samus is female. xD That's likely the only Metroid trivia I could answer. But I did find a pretty awesome but graphic piece of fanart (http://img219.echo.cx/img219/6823/samusaranfanart8ho.jpg).

Lindy or whoever can ask a question, as I probably couldn't come up with a decent one.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-02-2005, 02:38 AM
You start at frozen Ridley, run right, through the Navigation Room and into the shaft with the X barrier, crouch to charge the Shinespark, jump about halfway up the shaft, shoot the door there, Shinespark horizontally into the small hallway, use the slant in the floor to recharge the Shinespark, double back into the shaft, continue to the top, and Shinespark horizontally through the X barrier.

I think I remember Metroid2002 having a demonstration of it.

Edit: Yeah (http://www.metroid2002.com/fusion/other_early_power_bomb_tank.php).

Medi
08-04-2005, 12:56 AM
This isn't supposed to be a trivia question for you guys to answer, it's Lindy's turn anyway. I was just wondering, why did the programmers make items that you get before they are downloaded in the data room impossible to use?

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-04-2005, 01:00 AM
Because Metroid Fusion was designed to completely oppose the ideas of freedom of exploration and sequence-breaking.

Lindy
08-04-2005, 01:16 AM
Because the programmers are big jerks who don't like fun.

What movement-based innovation did Metroid Zero Mission bring to the series that had never been used prior in any form, and has never been used again to this date?

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-04-2005, 01:22 AM
The Morphing Ball Shinespark is just one form of the Shinespark, which has been around since Super Metroid.

The Power Grip was in Metroid Fusion.

The Morphing Ball shooters were used again in Metroid Prime 2.

So I'll say the Zip Lines.

Lindy
08-04-2005, 02:03 AM
Hot shot, you win, next please.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-04-2005, 02:14 AM
This is only Metroid trivia in a fairly liberal sense, but give me a break. It's hard to think up new questions.

Q: What Virtual Boy game featured a pretty huge Super Metroid cameo? Bonus happy points if you can describe the cameo in any amount of detail.

Medi
08-04-2005, 02:44 AM
since you said the word huge i say kraid, but I haven't even played virtual boy so it's just a random guess

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-04-2005, 03:03 AM
The question is what the game is, not what the cameo is. And there's no Virtual Boy game called Kraid.

Medi
08-04-2005, 03:05 AM
Oh, ok. I was kind of confused on that.

edczxcvbnm
08-04-2005, 05:58 AM
Problably that space flying game. There were only like 4 games and that space flying game is the only one I played. I image the cameo is the ship coming in and helping you out at some point.

*wronger than wrong*

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-04-2005, 06:03 AM
Hint: The game does in fact have kind of a sci-fi theme.

Chzn8r
08-04-2005, 07:07 AM

Lindy or whoever can ask a question, as I probably couldn't come up with a decent one.

That is some badass artwork. It is now my desktop background.

Lindy
08-04-2005, 01:26 PM
Aha!

Galactic Pinball, it had a Metroid-based mini-game when you hit certain bumpers in sequence. The idea was to blast through waves of enemies in Samus' ship and generally rawk out in space.

Thanks for making me whip out my old VB roms and painfully burn my eyes with the scorching red and green colours. >=(

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-04-2005, 08:31 PM
That's right. It even had a crazy little rendition (http://norbert-x.com/rock/userfiles/Kishi/Flight%20of%20Aran.mp3) of the Super Metroid theme.

Lindy
08-04-2005, 08:48 PM
What was the "slogan" that accompanied Metroid?

Medi
08-05-2005, 11:02 PM
I have absolutely no idea.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-06-2005, 01:04 AM
"The challenge is Metroid, the power is Nintendo"?

Lindy
08-06-2005, 02:12 AM
Not that 'un.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-06-2005, 03:01 AM
Was it in the commercial at all? If not, I have no idea, since I know there's nothing that could pass for a slogan on the packaging and I don't think I've ever seen a print ad for the game.

Lindy
08-06-2005, 05:19 PM
I...don't remember, I just have a slogan in my head forever attached to the game booming in a loud voice.

Maybe it was in the manual, I forget. Y'know, like Super Metroid had "Destroy the space pirates and rescue the last Metroid!" or something like that, I forget, maybe my memory is just playing up on me.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-06-2005, 06:01 PM
Y'know, like Super Metroid had "Destroy the space pirates and rescue the last Metroid!" or something like that"It's you against the evil Mother Brain in the thrilling battle of Metroid"? If it's not that, I give.

Lindy
08-06-2005, 06:20 PM
You know what, I'm not even sure I'm remembering it right, forget that question ever existed.

Try this instead =(

Which Nintendo console(s) did Samus never appear on?

KentaRawr!
08-06-2005, 07:00 PM
Nintendo 64

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-06-2005, 07:05 PM
Super Smash Bros., remember?

I'm going to say GameBoy Color, even though it's not really a "console."

Lindy
08-06-2005, 07:29 PM
Nuh-uh.

edczxcvbnm
08-06-2005, 08:16 PM
N64 Disc Drive(japan). w00t!

Lindy
08-06-2005, 08:22 PM
That's an add-on, not a console, doesn't count >=(

KentaRawr!
08-06-2005, 08:25 PM
Virtual Boy! I just know this is it!

edczxcvbnm
08-06-2005, 08:26 PM
I give up.

NES - Metroid
SNES- Super Metroid
N64 - Super Smash Bros.
Gamecube - Metroid Prime
Revolution - Metroid Prime 3

WAIT!

She appeared on all consoles! Trick question.

Lindy
08-06-2005, 08:27 PM
Yeah, Ed has it XD

For the record, GBC had a remake of Metroid 2 in colour, it was at the development stage and some cartridges were produced, but it was never finished.

And as shown earlier, she was also on the VB, in Galactic Pinball.

You also forgot the FDS, which on which Metroid was released in Japan, and with a save system too! Those sneaky Japanese!

edczxcvbnm
08-06-2005, 08:33 PM
Awesome!

This selectable ability has appeared in only one Metroid game...what is this super cool item and what game did it appear in?

*hopes he doesn't smurf this up*

EDIT: smurfED THIS ONE UP ALREADY! *thinks*

Jeopardy time

The answer is: Female

30 seconds

Reserve Tanks?

Lindy
08-06-2005, 08:39 PM
There are FAR too many of those.

All the beams and visors, bar power, combat and scan only appeared in Metroid Prime 2, for example.

Though if you're talking selectable abilities in that you can turn them on and off from the menu, that's just Super Metroid, and the only item from Super Metroid that hasn't reappeared is the Reserve Tank, which can be auto or selectable from the game itself, so really, too many options.

edczxcvbnm
08-06-2005, 08:40 PM
I guess that would be right but there are multiple things that the answer could be from light beam to Heat visor. Also reserve tanks are not a selectable ability.

Moving along there is no question. Now you ask the question like in Jeopardy!

Answer: Female

Sorry but your question did not pertain to metroid and it ended with a "!" instead of a "?" thus not even making it a question.

Looks like you edited it from your Mom joke to the answer. Yeah go!

KentaRawr!
08-06-2005, 08:47 PM

Very sorry. I was thinking un-clearly, so I put in an "!" instead of a "?".

Also, I just had the strange urge to put "My Mom" there.

I have edited my post a bit. Sorry if I am being disruptive to this topic. I truly do not mean to.

Edit: Why must you edit so quickly?

Edit 2: "Yeah go" as in "Make a question"? Alright then.

I think this is probably too easy, but I will try anyway.

(Assuming I should ask the questions like in Jeopardy)

(Zero Mission Question)

Answer: Gravity Suit, Space Jump, Plasma Beam.

What are the unknown items?

Correct! Alright, you go.

Medi

Answer: Dark Samus

Lindy
08-06-2005, 09:17 PM
Who is the Dark Hunter?

Who is the mutated form of Metroid Prime in MP2?

Who caused Samus to lose her equipment at the start of MP2?

Who is the final boss of MP2?

Who is shown at the end of the 100% MP2 ending?

Too many possibilities.

Medi
08-06-2005, 09:17 PM
Sure, I'll take that. You're turn.

Lindy
08-06-2005, 09:21 PM
Jeopardy is dumb, and we don't even get it here in England.

Answer : Core-X

KentaRawr!
08-06-2005, 09:29 PM
What X in Metroid Fusion do you Absorb to gain new powers?

Lindy
08-06-2005, 09:32 PM
You bastage, that was EXACTLY what I was thinking of.

Though, "What appears after the defeat of every boss in Metroid Fusion?" would work too.

edczxcvbnm
08-06-2005, 09:39 PM
You guys don't have to do jeopardy if you don't want to. I just did that because I wanted to ask a stupidly easy question in a different way.

Lindy
08-06-2005, 09:41 PM
Ed, we've had TEN FREAKING PAGES OF TRIVIA.

Running out of questions and answers, aside from super-geeky item position questions which are no damned fun.

Something different is nice >=(

KentaRawr!
08-06-2005, 09:54 PM
Lol. I guess I get to go then.

...I was desperate for a question, so this one is just way too easy.

Answer: "Any objections, lady?" (Notice the Quotation Marks.)

My question is just too hard, eh?

Lindy
08-06-2005, 11:12 PM
Ed, we've had TEN FREAKING PAGES OF TRIVIA.

I count 12.
I counted ten up until Ed started Jeopardy, that was the point.

And it's "What words did Adam end every order to Samus with?"

Other side of brain: "You got it. You can make a question now."

Lindy
08-06-2005, 11:53 PM
lawl, intarweb rawks.

Forget Jeopardy.

In Metroid Fusion, post Screw Attack, name the next main item(s) (i.e. Abilities) you find.

Medi

Ice Beam

Lindy
08-07-2005, 12:10 AM
Almost, but a little short.

Medi
08-07-2005, 12:16 AM
That's the only thing I can think of...

Frozen Flame
08-07-2005, 12:53 AM
The Ice Beam... and an orange suit?

Lindy
08-07-2005, 12:54 AM
Yes, the unnamed suit, it boosts your defence so it counts as an ability~

Frozen Flame
08-07-2005, 01:00 AM
Yay, so I guess it's my turn then. I wish they would have named the suit... Anyway, in Metroid II - The Return of Samus, there are "Secret Worlds." What must be done to enter them?

Chzn8r
08-07-2005, 01:15 AM
Press pause/unpause repeatedly. I think the select button had something to do with it too but now I'm not remembering. I used to do it on my Gameboy, mostly in the final area.

Frozen Flame
08-07-2005, 01:19 AM
Correct. Yeah I do it in the final area too. It's actually just pressing the SELECT button repeatedly, not pause. But since you mentioned it, it's your turn.

08-07-2005, 04:05 AM

08-07-2005, 04:12 AM
Correct. Yeah I do it in the final area too. It's actually just pressing the SELECT button repeatedly, not pause. But since you mentioned it, it's your turn.

Ok, I technically didn't get it right, but I'll go ahead anyways. Haven't asked a question in a while.

Nintendo Power mapped out a decent chunk of Metroid 2: Return of Samus in an old issue. How many "areas" had full maps provided?

Medi
08-13-2005, 09:06 PM
This is difficult, um, 6?

Chzn8r
08-15-2005, 02:56 AM
Sorry I killed the thread. That question was too obscure.

Ok, how about, how many US artworks were there for the NES Metroid?

Medi
08-15-2005, 02:39 PM
It's either 13 or 14. I went to http://www.classicgaming.com/mdb/m1/artwork.htm to find out.

Chzn8r
08-15-2005, 07:57 PM
Let me rephrase: The box/cartrige artwork.

Medi
08-15-2005, 08:01 PM
Oh, well let me check...

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-15-2005, 08:03 PM
Let me rephrase: The box/cartrige artwork.I'd say two. One for the original release (the pixelated stuff they thought looked cool back then) and one for the rerelease (the Samus picture lifted out of the Metroid II art).

Chzn8r
08-15-2005, 09:21 PM
Let me rephrase: The box/cartrige artwork.I'd say two. One for the original release (the pixelated stuff they thought looked cool back then) and one for the rerelease (the Samus picture lifted out of the Metroid II art).

Yup. We used to have the pixelated-looking one, but sold or lost it or something. So we have the re-release.

Your turn.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-15-2005, 09:38 PM
List all the different ships Samus has flown in the games.

edczxcvbnm
08-15-2005, 09:41 PM
I can only think of 2. The one she used in every game but fusion. Fusion's was just...wierd.

That is my half-ass answer and I am sticking to it. I don't know the names of the ships because I thought they were just called the ship.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-15-2005, 09:44 PM
They don't have names that I'm aware of. And you missed a lot.

Lindy
08-15-2005, 10:24 PM
Well, Metroid~Super Metroid, I think are the same ship, and the same kind is used in Metroid Prime and Prime 2, not sure though.

Metroid Zero Mission uses an alternate style of ship, which I think is also shown as the ship Samus uses in the Metroid Prime 3, at least in the trailers anyway.

And then there's the Fusion ship, which I actually liked quite a lot.

Skyblade

The Hunter-Class gunship is her standard one, according to the scans from Prime and Prime 2. Other than that, just the one from Metroid Fusion. While it didn't have a name, the ship's computer was called Adam...

Well, she also flies the Zebesian Space Pirate Escape Pod in Zero Mission.

Kawaii Ryűkishi

So far no one has listed all of them.

KentaRawr!

I can't think of their names, but I will name the games they appeared in:

1. Metroid, Metroid 2, & Super Metroid.

2. Metroid Zero Mission

3. Metroid Fusion

4. Metroid Prime 1 & 2.

5. The Ship she stole in Metroid Zero-Mission.

I probably got it wrong. >_<

Skyblade

She might have had a different ship in Metroid 2, but I doubt it.

The ship in Super Metroid, Zero Mission, Prime, and Prime 2 is the same ship. The one she stole in Zero Mission and the one in Fusion are the only other ones there. How can we be missing one?

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-16-2005, 08:46 AM
Okay.
The red ship she has at the beginning of Zero Mission.
The Space Pirate ship in which she escapes at the end of Zero Mission.
The Metroid Prime ship.
The Metroid Prime 2 ship.
The Metroid II and Super Metroid ship.
The Metroid Fusion ship.
Anyone can go.

You forgot the ship from Metroid Prime 3. It clearly looks different from all the other ships :D ;_;

This is a question I don't know the answer to but I am sure someone here does.

What gender are metroids? Are they male, female or asexual? I don't think they are asexual because of the queen but then again they could all evolve that far and have the goods inside them to just lay the eggs already fertilized. Answers plz ;_;

I will say Female.

I'm not really sure. A metroid cannot reproduce until it's at the end of it's lifecycle and has became a queen. I'll say asexual.

Not enough, and I demand more specificity.

Medi
08-17-2005, 02:14 PM
Power, Varia, Gravity, Phazon, Dark, Light, Fusion, The cheap blue, tight suit that she used in MZM in Space Pirate Mother Ship, and the suit that she got from the Chozo Ghost Trials in Chozodia in MZM (in which she got those huge shoulder pads), also the orange suit that she got after the SA-X was destroyed by the Omega Metroid. That's all I can remember.

Lindy
08-17-2005, 02:18 PM
Close enough.

The suit she was given in Chozodia in MZM was actually the Power/Varia/Gravity suit, but it counts as a new suit 'cause her previous one went boom and all. Also, I was looking for Fusion-Varia and Fusion-Gravity, since they're really new suits as they're add-ons to the entirely new Fusion suit, but that'd be far too pedantic, so whuteva.

What does the Super Metroid Shinespark do differently to every other Metroid game's Shinespark?

Kawaii Ryűkishi
08-20-2005, 07:41 PM
It rapidly saps Samus's energy, and if her energy is so low that Shinesparking would kill her, she simply won't be able to do it. (Which is why there's an energy restoration room in that pit with the Dachora.) This aspect was removed in later games when the Shinespark became a more prominent, standard move that was easy to execute, as opposed to an obscure technique for advanced players.

Old (http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?classicgaming/mdb/music/m1/gsm/01%20-%20Title%20BGM.mp3) and new (http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?classicgaming/mdb/music/mzm/MZM003%20-%20Title%20Theme.mp3).

darn, let me re-think

Metroid - purple? it's been a while
Metroid Zero Mission - red, then silver as ridley robot
Super Metroid - purple, then red in Lower Norfair
Metroid Prime - silver, i think. i've only played the first half-hour at my friends house
Metroid Fusion - dark purple

what am i forgetting? i can't remember very well. it has been a while

Kawaii Ryűkishi
09-06-2005, 03:18 AM
Metroid Zero Mission - red, then silver as ridley robotHere's where you messed up. First, Ridley Robot doesn't count since it's not actually Ridley. More importantly, Ridley is not red in MZM.
Metroid Fusion - dark purpleIt's actually blue, but that doesn't count either since it's an X parasite mimicking Ridley, not Ridley himself. Blue still counts, though, because that's the real Ridley's body color when he's frozen.

Need I say that you are correct?

Kawaii Ryűkishi
09-06-2005, 03:40 PM
Okay. What is the only password in Metroid that is not a natural result of the system's checksum values, but is instead hard-coded into the game? Bonus points if you know what it does or the meaning behind the words it contains.

Medi
09-06-2005, 03:46 PM
Is it: JUSTIN BAILEY ------- ------- which starts you in Norfair with all upgrades, 200 missles and Samus in a bikini? Bailey is a british word for bathing suit so it means "Just in a bathing suit."

Or you might be talking about NARPAS SWORD0 0000000 0000000 which starts you at the beginning of the game with all upgrades and infinite energy and missles. I don't know what Narpas Sword is though.

Is it: JUSTIN BAILEY which starts you in Norfair with all upgrades, 200 missles and
------- ------- Samus in a bikini? Bailey is a british word for bathing suit so it means "Just in a bathing suit."JUSTIN BAILEY 000000 000000 is as random a password as any other. There are plenty of other passwords that give you the same circumstances; this one was just discovered early on in the game's life and became extremely popular.

For years, it was a minor mystery who this Justin Bailey character was, and then someone decide to start a rumor that "bailey" was some archaic foreign colloquialism for "swimsuit," so the message actually was "just in swimsuit." For some reason, people really liked the sound of this, so the rumor spread like wildfire, even getting printed as fact in game magazines.

The fact, however, is that "bailey," at no point in history, in no country or province, was ever a colloquialism for "swimsuit." Professional linguists have looked into this matter specifically, and it's just not there. And even if it were, there would be no way a programmer living in Japan and speaking only Japanese in 1987 could ever know about it. Justin Bailey isn't a particular person who was close to the Metroid team's heart, either.

The password system in Metroid allows for literally billions of such "messages," but neither Justin Bailey nor any other was ever intentional or possessing any special meaning. If JUSTIN BAILEY were intentional, then it would either have to be hard-coded, which it isn't, or the entire password system would have to be based upon that one password, which it isn't. The system is based on 000000 000000 000000 000000.
Or you might be talking about NARPAS SWORD0 0000000 0000000 which starts you at the beginning of the game with all upgrades and infinite energy and missles. I don't know what Narpas Sword is though.Yes, NARPAS SWORD, followed by zeroes or blanks, is the password. It's hard-coded into the game and does something no normal password can possibly do: it gives Samus infinite health, infinites missiles, and every item in the game--except the Wave Beam, since Samus can only have one special beam at a time. The inherent message isn't "Narpas Sword" but "Nar Password." It's named after Tohru Narihiro, the man who converted Metroid to NES format and designed the password system that replaced the FDS version's save system.

Medi
09-06-2005, 04:23 PM

My question is: How many Ice Beams are there in Metroid II?

3. The first one in the first area containing multiple metroids; the one inside the tall corridor where all the beams are located for a second time and each room as you go up contains a better one; and lastly in the final area, in the ceiling room to the right from the large cavern. If you decide you can't beat the Queen Metroid and need to leave, you fall into this room from above.

The Un-Named Orange Suit in Metroid Fusion is accesible in Metroid Prime.

Medi
09-16-2005, 08:32 PM
Wow, I'm stumped. I've only played the first half-hour if MP because I don't have a gamecube. I played it at my friends house. I bet Kawaii knows.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
09-16-2005, 09:16 PM
I bet I do, since I posted the answer before the server change.

To obtain the suit, you just need to enable the Fusion Suit in the Metroid Fusion Connection Bonuses and then get to the point in the game where Samus gets the Phazon Suit. The Phazon Suit is replaced by the orange suit, but it's called the same thing due to laziness and the fact that the orange suit doesn't really have a name anyway.

Chzn8r

Shoot, I don't even know. Metroid 2 was in 4-shade GB colors though, so you can't really count that. I know it's black in Super and blue in Fusion, pretty sure it's blue in Prime 2 as well. Don't remember Zero Mission's swimsuit, or even the original's for that matter. Hmmm. And Prime didn't have one.

Shoeberto
09-18-2005, 05:55 AM
Someone else will have to fact check this, since I don't even really know. I just thought it was a good question.

I know you're right for at least Fusion's. I didn't even realize MP2 had Samus appearing in a swimsuit.

Skyblade

Let's see. Super Metroid: Black.

Metroid Prime: No swimsuit.

Prime 2, Zero Mission, Fusion: Blue.

Kawaii Ryűkishi
