View Full Version : EoFF: an older community?

Agent Proto
07-13-2005, 04:33 PM
EoFF has been around for about 5 years now and throughout those 5 years we have all grown older (surprise). Do you feel the community as a whole is getting older or do you feel the old guys eventually drop out and younger people join in?

Do you feel the overall type of topics of changed or the overall attitudes of members? Will you be here 5 years from now? What do you think will be different about you?

*is a thread thief*

Anyway, I've been here for most of the five years, and I have noticed that the community is much different when I first remembered it. However, with that said, it still is one of the better communities, ever. And will I be around for the next 5 years? I hope so, but only then, I would post just on my spare time, whenever that will be.

I feel the old guys eventually drop out and younger people join in.

Nothing has changed except who's here and who isn't, and even then there are still a few who haven't left after five years. And there are a lot more people than when you and I first joined, which means it's very different from then, but, meh, no fuss.

When I joined a little over a year ago, I noticed certain people.
Many of those people are no longer posting, or only posting very infrequently, it's sad really, but then all of a sudden.
Early 2005 many people began to post and we got familiar with such people as: Iri Valentine, Crash Numbers and boris no no, they renewed EoFF, I think that's the reason why EoFF got so much better when they joined.

There too many new people these days. And too many new people calling other people new people even though there is a months difference between join dates.

Its hard to keep track of all the members unlike before when pretty much every member was notable in their own way. Now we seem to have people who are clones of each other.

I was having the same thoughts the other day, Proto, but I thought I'd be crazy to actually post a topic about it. :p But yeah, I definitely think the boards have grown older in general - I don't know if it is me growing older or the boards, but I can sense a general increase in the maturity and innuendo in discussions. Of course, new younger members join all the time, but I usually don't pay attention to them anyways. :p

The member that matter have all become older. Most of the young folk that show up leave without posting, and so can hardly be considered part of the 'community'. The average age of members that actually contribute to the forum is probably higher than the average age of registered members as a whole.

I joined alittle less than a year ago, actually it'll be a full year in about what 5 days? I'm a younger (well, active) member (12) but I don't find myself immature or anything but thats just me I come here just about everyday its rare for me never to log in and a little over 1,000 posts. I doubt I'm a well-known member of the community thoguh I'd like to be but I enjoy it here anyway and have made many friends (Dixie, TifaLockhart7, Kamiko, Raven Nox, ff7_cloud_tifa_vincent, Dreamcloud and so forth) and seen many newbies come (and usually leave 3 days after) and seen some oldies go (Dr. Unne  ) alot of good people are at EoFF a lot I'd like to be friends with(but too nervous to PM over half the time). So I consider myself a member who'll never really be well known but'll always be there. I want to post here until the end. I love it here at EoFF. I have so many memories I've made in the last year, how could I leave?

I've never been much of a major player either. I miss those folks :(

I've spent my puberty days here, really. Joined at 11, turned 12 roughly a month later, and have been here since. The thing I hate is how everyone I was talking to was two to four years older than me, since at the time, I was the youngest member. I don't think there was a lack of respect because I was younger, but there's been many times where I felt alienated by the age difference.

So now they've grown up and gone off to college and, more or less, left this place behind. I could find people in my age, but it's just not the same without them.

In short: Unban Linus!

I've been here 10 months, and I'd have to say that I've changed a good bit over that period of time. My personality is the same, really, but over the last 10 months I've become much more involved in forums and chatrooms and that sort of thing. While I still enjoy EoFF greatly, and am excited by some of the recent changes, I enjoyed chatting and reading the opinions of older members far more than newer ones. The last 5 months haven't been as good as the first 5 were. I find it hard to see myself still here in 5 years, but, if I am, it'll certainly be for #eoff and not for the forum itself. And that really just depends on who sticks around.

I'm turning 26 this year. To say that this is an 'older' community makes no sense to me as I was 'old' when the community started, much less when I joined.

In any case, a lot of the 'oldbies' are gone, replaced by new cliques and values and drama.

Yay for internet.

You know, the ages of people around here are about the same when I first joined up. The threads are pretty much the same as they were when I first joined as well. The thing I notice is that the responses seem to be a little different. And perhaps that's just because of the way the new kids are growing up. Last year, my niece moved in with my wife and me for a while and she's only eight years younger than me. Honestly, I felt like an old man after talking to her. The younger kids are just so different from when my friends and me were their age.

So it basically makes it a bit more difficult to connect with members here because the way we think and our interests, other than FF, are mostly different.

It depends really. There are more younger people registering now than older people. That meaning I think there are more teenagers than people in their 20s registering on the forum. I'm thinking will the same Admins, Site Staff & Cid's Knights be here in five years. Perhaps some will retire from moderating / administrating this forum. Some will stay here. But I can't honestly say who I think will still be here in 5 years, because it's impossible. So really I don't think EoFF as a community is getting older. Perhaps just staying the same really.

Topics are always different. But you get different types of topics from the different members. So it's always different. But then you get some types of people who like the same thing so topics are made again. But there are millions of things to talk about.. No, billions. So there's [I]always something to be talked about, it's just the case of someone making a topic about it. Some people will make topics that some people think towards it "Gosh, why didn't I think of that?!" & so on. Plus people always steal topics from other forums so there's more possibilty there will be different topics.

As for attitudes of members, well, some members become more mature [Like me] than they were when they first registered on the forum. Especially if they've just turned 13 when they register on the forum & they stay for 5 years, you'll see a big change then. Some who are agressive on the forums will perhaps get more tame & lighten down. Some members just stay the same. Attitudes of members may change because of certain things that will happen on the forum & things outside of theforum / internet whatever. So really, probably everyone will change, even if it's just something small.

I know I will be here in 5 years, unless there's another World War or something, the World blows up or I die or something like that. Nothing's going to stop me from not posting on here, unless I get banned. Which I won't, because I follow by the rules, so you can't go wrong. & I'm not going to do anything to put myself in the position of being banned. I'm wonderind if I will still be an ordianary member in 5 years or if I will be more than that..

What I think will be different about me will be how I react to things & what I know. For example, I know limited things about web making, script & complicated things that admins will know about, but I'm going to push myself to learn a lot about those things. So I will definitely have a lot more knowledge about those things & obviously loads more things. & I'll be reacting different to people because I'll be more mature. I'll also be a lot more intelligent in 5 years time. I can see myself here in 5 years time because I'll only be 22, & 22 is an age you can still come to forums at. But then again even 35-45 is a age you can still come to forums at. It just depends on if you still want to come to the forum - you might suddenly think it is a waste of time or that you can't be bothered

I've been going to EoFF since 2001 (I know my profile dosen't say that.. blame that on me not remembering my old username) and I think I've changed a fair deal. EoFF isn't a big part of my life now, but back in 01, it was a pretty big part of it.

As Proto says, time does change and we've all grown older. Lots of things have changed about myself, and I'm sure that's the same for many others. People move on with their lives, and I'm sure a majority of the veterans will do this soon as well.

I even made a enemy in a day upon my return, and a friend.Although I had them before I left, it shows that the place is forever changes and unless Cid cuts on funding or Psychotic posts THAT picture... this place will still be here.

I think...

When I joined at age 13, I thought everyone was older than me....now at 17/18, I feel that everyone is younger than me.

Erm... well I was 12, now I'm 18.

But I don't think I'll be here in five years. ^^ I'd be either working or in grad school, and I'll probably be married. I think life is changing very quickly right now. :} But who knows, maybe I'll be around to torment you people for ages more >)

unless I get banned. Which I won't, because I follow by the rules, so you can't go wrong. & I'm not going to do anything to put myself in the position of being banned.Really? Well even the unshakeable can get shaked. Look at Dirty Den in Eastenders... all it takes is a scandal...
TisWas Scandal picture.... It's soooooooooooo Scandalous!!! (http://www.duck-rock.com/Local%20Wildlife%20Chipmunk%202.jpg)XD!

I think for the most part, EoFF has always been a 15-18 year old's forum. The staff may get older, oldbies may complain more about creaks, but the majority of people here are probably still in their teens.

Plus, you got all those old people going, "I'm too mature for this place! I'm leaving! Hand me my applesauce, orderly. And the bedpan."
