View Full Version : An artist/band's masterpiece

Name the masterpiece/best song by an artist, in your opinion. There are only two definite songs I can think of at the moment.

From Tori Amos' "Scarlet's Walk" album: Gold Dust

Gold Dust is amazing. It's so sad and so beautiful, and it's a very nolstagic, I love it. Scarlet's Walk was a brilliant album by Tori, her best work ever. She sang the best I've heard her sing in this song, and the lyrics are really great too. I'd recommend you all to download this song, if you do, tell me what you think of it?

Slipknot: Vermilion

I never would have expected it from Slipknot, but this song is really beautiful, I love it. Definitely their best song ever, in my opinion. The video is also really nice. :)

I don't think I'll ever tire of these two songs.

Nas : The World Is Yours

Roni Size : Brown paper bag

Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five : The Message

I won't mention Grace Jones this time. xD

Tori Amos - A Sorta Fairytale
In my opinion, one of her best songs... EVER.
The flow is great and Tori just sounds so damn sexy. <3
I love that album too Rye. :D

Sinéad O'Connor - Troy
The best song of all times (yes even better than any of Grace Jones' songs).
It's terrific, the longing lyrics and Sinéad sings in a two-range octave: soprano and a low whispering. Terrific.

Yeah, Scarlet's Walk is amazing. The only other album by Tori that's almost that good is Little Earthquakes. If I got to pick two masterpieces by Tori, I'd choose Me and a Gun as my second. That songs is just... wow.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

First thing that came to mind.

Rise Against - Like The Angel
I don't like Rise Against that much, but I love this song.

Jupiter Sunrise (http://www.myspace.com/jupitersunrise) - Arthur Nix
I like all of Under A Killer Blue Sky, but this song sticks out. It's peculiar. Check 'em out. Arthur Nix is on their Myspace.

Rufio - We Exist
This song means a lot to me. I can relate with it...

Something Corporate - Space
Probably the only song I like by them also.

This will probably lead to some controversy, but Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here.

J.S. Bach - Brandenburgh Concerto (and about 90% of everything else that he wrote)

BoB Dylan - Knockin' On Heavans Door. (and about 90% of everything else that he wrote)

I'd say Bach's absolute masterpiece is the St Matthew Passion, or maybe the Goldberg Variations

The Rasmus - In The Shadows - I never tire of that song, it lifts me, i get butterflys in my tummy as soon as it starts, you gotta love Lauri's voice :<3:

Apocalyptica feat. Lauri Ylönen - Apocalyptica - Again, i never tire of this song

Eternal Sphere

Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons
Constantly changing which never seems to become boring or tedious to listen to. One of James LaBrie's best outputs. I even enjoy the acoustic intro.

Pain Of Salvation - Idioglossia
Infectious chorus with some rap-like verses. I love this song.

Zero Hour - Stratagem
The whole band contributes to the dark and haunting atmosphere, especially to this song.

the problem with picking Radiohead masterpieces is all of their songs are so good that none can really stand out that much.

"Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd

"In My Life" - The Beatles

"Imagine"/"Watching The Wheels" - John Lennon

"Brenda's Got a Baby" - Tupac Shakur

"Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zepplin

yes indeed

The Floyd's masterpiece is Shine On Parts 1-9. I'd agree that Bach's masterpiece is the Goldberg Variations. Other ones:

Genesis - Firth Of Fifth
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick, Part One
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part One
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells, Part One
Yes - Close To The Edge
Van Der Graaf Generator - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers

<b>John Denver - "Rocky Mountain High"</b>
The pinnacle song of his career and the one that he is most identified with most today. Other candidates are "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Annie's Song".

<b>James Taylor - "Fire and Rain"</b>
The most popular song by him, with the exception of "You've Got a Friend," except he actually wrote "Fire and Rain." Magnificently has become an autograph of JT's soul and what was so about his life and his experiences.

<b>The Beatles - "Yesterday"</b>
This was difficult to decide, but I base this answer on the fact that it's (I think) the most covered song in music history.

<b>Don McLean - "American Pie"</b>
Not too difficult, because he didn't really do anything else.

Street Spirit.

Don't care what anyone else says about about other albums that I haven't listened to (but I will), that's the best. The end yay!

I can't think of anything new right now, stfu.

Yamenko I love you, but Close to the Edge isn't Yes' masterpiece.
South Side of the Sky takes the cake for them. And I'd say all of Thick
as a Brick could be considered one song really, it's hard to judge the
first and second parts...but if you do need to choose I agree with you
about the first one.

I'd also say that Floyd's masterpiece is Echoes.

Procol Harum - In Held 'Twas in I
The single greatest progressive rock track ever created. When it's
performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra it is the single most
amazing song in the history of mankind. ;]

Emerson Lake and Palmer - Tarkus

Sergei Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto no. 2 in Cm (especially Part I)

Yann Tiersen - La Chute

Therion - The Siren of the Woods

Radiohead's most epic song WOULD be We Suck Young Blood if they
had jammed out on the climactic part like 4 minutes into it. However,
the world is not a perfect place and because they don't it makes it one
of the worst songs ever made, simply because it gives me the worst
case of blueballs every time I listen to it. Goddamnit I'm pissed just
thinking about it.

PS, actually now that you mention I agree with Street Spirit for
Radiohead.

Some bands have one track that stands out from the rest. Some of the include:

ASP: Die Ruhe vor dem Sturm
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter: Erhelle meine Seele
Dornenreich: Reime faucht der Märchensarg
Janus: Der Flüsterer im Dunkeln
Laibach: Die Liebe
Oathean: In fear with shiver
Richthofen: Blut der Pferde
Schmerz: Meine Prinzessin
Stahlhammer: Stahlingrad
Weissglut: Ein Atemzug

Therion - The Siren of the WoodsThis is a great song aswell.

See, I was too, but I think it's supposed to be in sync with what's going on in the rest of the song. It's like, "Hey, kids. We're gonna draw you in. You're gonna be ours. *build...build...build...slower than before* Haha told you so."

My favorite Radiohead song is No Surprises, but I think Paranoid Android is more epic.

And there's a lot of songs on The Bends that are as good as Street Spirit, particularly at the beginning. Tracks 1-4 are pretty much contenders against it.

eestlinc
07-15-2005, 09:08 PM
Just is the best song on The Bends, Planet Telex is right up there, and so is Sulk. Not that Street Spirit is bad or anything, but it's not head and shoulders above the rest.

-N-
07-15-2005, 09:08 PM
I agree with Optium in that We Suck Young Blood would have rocked more if they did that, but there's a certain kind of quality the song gains from simply not doing what they were supposed to. It's not the best song, though, but it's still kinda cool.

I think eestlinc's response to Optium's The Bends question would be Sulk. Mine would be My Iron Lung.

edit: Oh, well, hello eest. :p

eestlinc
07-15-2005, 09:20 PM
My Iron Lung is also good. Sulk is awesome. If I ever had a band and did a Radiohead cover, it would be Sulk, partly because it's awesome and partly because they never play it anymore.

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony.
The Verve Pipe - The Freshmen.
They're both fabulous songs. Originally I thought the two were the same band, but I don't know if I could choose which of these songs I like better.

My Iron Lung is also good. Sulk is awesome. If I ever had a band and did a Radiohead cover, it would be Sulk, partly because it's awesome and partly because they never play it anymore.Sulk is probably my least favourite song from The Bends, although coming from such a good album that's hardly an insult. My Iron Lung is a great track, but I'd have to agree with foa and say that Street Spirit is the strongest song on the album, predictable choice though it may be.

However, while its far from my favourite Radiohead track, their 'masterpiece' is probably Paranoid Android. That song takes everything that's good about the band, brings it together and stretches it out over six and a half minutes. If I had to pick one song to sum them up, that'd be it.

-N-
07-15-2005, 11:06 PM
And because Paranoid Android was three songs to begin with. :p

I disagree. Although the intro is a well-done progressive tinged clean guitar piece, the end of the song destroys it. The end of the song (I'm talking about the distorted 16th note triplets) sounds cheesy and forced.

Metallica's masterpiece is probably Orion, where the instruments display astounding lyricism.

I`ll put my favorite songs from some bands now:

Mike and the Mechanics-Instrumental 6 ( by Tim Remwick)

most people don`t know this band, and those who know maybe don`t know this song, cuz` she was never recorded on studio. I`ve heard it on the internet and it was saying that it was an studio accident, but what a damn good accident! :D

Rush-Beneath, Between and Behind (by Geddy Lee and Neil Peart)

the most genious song from Rush.

Pink Floyd-Atom Heart Mother suite (by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright, Ron Geesin, Bob Ezrin and Alan Parsons)

The best band of the universe with three orchestras and a choir with a perfect arrange that made it the perfect rock symphony ever!!! :D

I'll agree with Bittersweet Symphony, by The Verve. Beautiful song.

Chevelle-An Evening With El Diablo. Yeah.

Silverchair-Either Across the Night or Tuna in the Brine. They're both amazing songs, and really....lovely-sounding, for lack of a better word.

Incubus-Either The Warmth, or Acqeous Transmission. I can relate to them so much; beautiful songs.

Yep.
