Ok, I've only beaten 2 of the FF's but I'll list the ones I've played, in the above mentioned order.

I just started VII/7, so I can't really judge it yet, but I'd say it's after 4 and before 5 right now.

If I had to include Chrono Trigger, it would also be after 4 and before 5.

So far I've enjoyed 9 the most (I'm on Disc 3 and I love it), but 6 and 4 have just captured my heart for sentimental reasons. So it's a tough call, the first 3 are very close together.

VIII = Best by a long shot
III = Another brilliant game
X = Great Game
IX = Differant, but still great
V = Hardest FF, but still good and very original
VII = Didnt see what all the hype was about, but still a great game
VI = Weird but good
X-2 = Good enough game, but there was something off about it
XI = This is in a steady last, what a disapointment

(Kingdom Hearts was also fantastic)

Do you know and this is an honest answer.

I can't do that.

I have played all of them (in regards to 1 - 10-2, tactics and tactics advanced) (not necessarily finished them all, but I've got all of them)
And I've loved every single one of them. Everyone of them has captured me in some way, yes some more than others yes some lack qualities n stuff. But over all, they all appeal to me on the same level.

So I can't list them all in an order from best to worst. Sorry, but I've played all of those ones I've listed.

Since you originally said no spin offs I won't include Tactics in that list (Haven't played a lot of FF2 or 3 either so they'll stay off my list). Also, don't assume that this list implies that I don't like the games near the bottom of the list, that wouldn't be true at all. I've enjoyed every FF game that I've played (yes that includes FFX-2).
