Y'know how there's online, invis, and away mode (and other kinds of away mode for the individual in you)? Why do people stay in online mode but wish to be left alone? This is especially the case with online games where people stay 'online' and start ragging on you when you say 'hi'.

grr...asl?

it makes them feel as if they have reached a pinnacle of importantness where they can be on msn and tell anyone to bugger off
either that or they're waiting for that girl they have a crush on to IM them
because they wont IM her (too scared)

Or maybe they just don't like talking to you.

It's annoying, though generally the person is online to talk to one person in particular, and doesn't want to block every other person on the list. At least, that's been the case in my experiences.

I used to stay on invisible mode on forums, but then I realized that there wasn't much point.

people at school always moan at me because I forget to set aways. When I went to lousiana, this one girl tried to msg me about ten times in that month.

It was funny explaining to her that I hadn't been to my computer at all in a whole month.

Whether I even look at someone's IM status depends on the person I'm messaging. For some people (like a certain guy who is always "Busy" but does nothing but watch anime all day), I'll ignore the status altogether, but for most people I don't know in person, well, I don't don't really message anyone anyway.

And I don't pay much attention to my own IM status, so for anyone hesitating to send me an IM, disregard my status altogether. I change it maybe once a week.

No one PMs me anyways, and I'm always logged into the forums, so whatever.

Azar hit the nail on the head.

EDIT: There's also the fact that sometimes I just forget to put an away message up (or take it down).

I swear everytime I start playing Guild Wars and forget to put up an away message, PG, you IM me. Just you. Every time.

I'm usually on "away" on Trillian 'cause I can talk on it and still be shown as away if I only want to talk to one or two particular people. I do that a lot when I talk to Ashley. Huzzah!

This is exactly why I don't IM people very often, and on the rare occasions that I do I always feel as if I'm being a nuisance and that they're scribbling my name down on an 'Idiots I'll never speak to again' list.

When people IM me at an inconvenient time, I try not to bite their head off. After all, it's my fault for not changing my status in the first place. So I either chat with them for a while or make up a quick excuse and sign off. But I'd never do that to you, of course. :D

Sometimes I forget to put up the Away Message, but it's not like that makes any difference.
I put MSN on 'Busy', but people still talk to you. And all I get is:

Are you there? Hellooooo? Shauna? You there?

It says busy! It's likely I'm not there... >_< :)

On a sidenote, I don't see why people get so annoyed when you say you're too busy to talk when you're not on away. So you messaged them and they were busy. Who cares? It's not like they're going out of their way to annoy you, and if you're that easily annoyed then it's your own damned fault.

"Heya." They message me.
"Hey man." I try to make an effort to always just leave it at 'hi' to see if they're just going to ask a quick question or if they're actually wanting to chat about anything.
"How are you?" Ah, so it's the latter.
"A bit busy right now. Why, what's up?" Just double checking to make sure they're actually wanting to babble and weren't going to follow it up with a quick question.
"Ah, nothing much. I'll catch you later." So it's not just a quick question and they're looking for the entertainment that I don't have time to give. Time to dismiss.
"Yeah, sorry. Have a good one, though, maybe I'll chat to you later." Maybe!

There are probably a lot of EoFFers that have had conversations with me that have gone quite similar to the above. :p

I do it as a trap, so that when people IM me I can scream "FUCK YOU FOOL I AM BUSY WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?"

Actually the next person that IMs me is going to get that. (And I imagine it'll be someone reading this thread looking for a laugh...good thing I'm not signed in, sucker. ;))

I don't do much IMing nowadays, and when I do it's usually the other person who IMs me.
