What computer operating system do you prefer to use, and why?

Personally, I like Windows, mainly because I'm used it and it's probably the most widely used. GUI's make it easy to use. I hate Linux with a passion. I never can understand how the stupid thing works.

I use Windows because of gaming. I occasionally play around with Linux, but I generally have trouble getting it to do what I want it to do.

Windows XP for gaming.
SuSE / Ubuntu Linux for most other tasks.

Linux isn't standardized like Windows, which scares a lot of people off. Each distro has a distinct feel to it and a varying way of compiling source into binary, however, they all run on X and the Linux kernel. Once you you start using it, it's hard to go back. The amount of customization is insane.

I use Windows 2000, and will probably continue to use Windows. I'm looking forward to what Windows Vista will be like when it ships in late 2006.

Linux is all right, but there's very little on it that Windows can't already do.

I think that OS-X is all right, but Apple hardware is terrible. It's weak, it's expensive, it ships with a one-buttoned mouse, and the cases themselves look like a block of frozen milk.

So instead I use OS-X on my computer with PearPC. Pity it's so slow...

Mac for Wacom-tableting. Linux for everything else. Windows for finding employment (sadly). At least it still runs Perl. Kind of.

I voted MS and Other, because 'prefer' implies that I have a choice in what I use:D

Yes, the mainstream (though admittedly more functional) versions are for Windows. You'd be surprised, though, how many open source alternatives exist to all of the big names.

The problem just exists in getting them setup :/

Windows is for people that know how to run a computer. Mac is for people that cant fix problems. Not to bash anyone that has Mac, but it just seems like they are making people seem more stupid by telling them "you cant crash it"

You stepped in it...

I use Windows XP SP2. I love it...it does everything I want it to do and I've yet to have a single problem with it.

That's wrong on many levels. I would say that OS X is for people who don't want problems, or want less of them. Windows is for people who assume that problems are a given. Which they are, in Windows, and in everything else too, but not to so great a degree as in Windows, in my experience.

I would also say that Windows is for people who think that "reinstall the OS" or "reboot and pray" are optimal solutions to problems. Linux is for people who know how to run a computer, for sufficiently large values of "run".

Windows is mostly for people who have become forcibly accustomed to Windows to the point where they don't recognize something better when it comes along, or for people who passively accept whatever comes installed on their computers by default due to lack of knowledge of alternatives or motivation to change.

I use Windows because though I'm internet saavy, I'm computer retarded. I honestly don't care what I use, I just want it to be easy, run most programs, and not always die.

I really don't have much to complain about with my windows. It's working smoothly enough for me. And when it doesn't, it can be fixed.

I use windows xp. Upstairs my computer in my bedroom has service pack 2. A file went missing and it tells me I need to reinstall it. Because of this missing file my computer resets itself at regular intervals of say, about seven minutes - thus making it virtually impossible to get into Windows long enough to do anything. So I finally loaded it up and put the XP CD in, couldn't find the file it wanted and decided just to back my files up as it miraculously stayed on for an hour, and then reinstall Windows. But it wouldn't let me because my version of Windows XP on CD is older than the one on the pc, and I can't find the Service Pack CD to sort the whole mess out. So now I can't use my upstairs computer. At this moment in time I don't like WIndows.

but XP is really annoying...its making itself look fancy and it's so slow...that might be because of files and all the crap i've saved off the internet, but its not my fault i tell you!

I have this problem as well. The only thing to do is backup your stuff, fdisk and delete your Windows partition. That way when the Windows installer loads up it'll find unformatted space to install itself on. This has got to be the dumbest thing ever, though, that an OS with security updates can't recognize the same OS without the security updates.
