Hackers and viruses are rather evil....They got to my computer and they almost killed it!

I kept on getting those "Sexy singles are waiting for you!" and those "WE HAVE PORN!" Spam things.

Is it a virus or spyware or both?

Black hats are jerks. White hats are coo', though.

For my machine, the best offense is a good defense. Being aware of what I download, using Firefox, and regular AV and anti-spyware checks keep my machine running in tip-top shape. The only thing that could make it better would be if I would switch to Linux and eliminate the threat entirely (well, mostly), but I'm not quite there yet.

edit: It's obvious from the replies that most of you lump everything bad that can happen to your computers to be the fault of "hackers." There's actually a lot of classifications. Hell, white hats don't even do bad stuff. They help out companies to improve their security.

i thinks me got the damn "Trojan" virus from downloading something. i don't mind others trying to improve their security, but i don't like personal break-ins.

While I admire the ability of some people to hack computer systems an develop the devilish worms and viruses that can totally destroy my computer, I hate the fact the outcomes of their work with a passion. Hopefully people will stop creating viruses someday. But, in all likelyhood, that will never, ever happen.

Yeah, firefox is slowly protecting against less and less pop ups, and I always update it. I even got a trojan from a site I went on once, but Nortan Antivirus killed it instantly, it was pretty cool. But considering it was a serial number crack site, not very suprising.

The last virus that caused trouble for me was a couple of years ago.

If you want to make firefox even tighter against popups, get the adblocker extension.

I'm surprised no one has tried to make the distinction between 'hackers' and 'crackers'

I mean srsly, go to MIT's hacks website. Now *that* is hacking.
and good stuff at that <3

I was about to define the differences, but I'm lazy and just said that there were differences.

MIT's "hacks" are more pranks than anything, they just call them hacks. It makes more sense for reference, though, since their pranks are always on such a gigantic scale. Like the cop car on the roof with working lights.

Viruses keep me on my toes. I've had to deal with viruses twice in two months -- my brother's computer got infested by a trojan and a few weeks ago my aunt's computer had a virus IN THE PAGE FILE.

The page file is not deletable. How do you think I managed to undo that mess?

Ok, need some tools eh?

Free virus scanner that kicks much ass: AVG FREE edition
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

I Highly suggest AVG free as I have been running it now for one year. IT is easy to run and hs one small updater that is on a customisable scheduler. I was testing AVG vs Norton - and AVG wins in every area. Norton sucks now - no big suprise.
---------------------
For spyware there is only one king: Spybot S & D
For some kicks, read the Eula :)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

This awsome (and free!!) utility will anihalate most spyware if you keep it updated. It is not perfect but easily the better of whats out there (Free or paid).
---------------------------
For browser hijacks - that is when you get annoying popups and such - HijakThis makes editing the regestry easy. Only do this if you know what you are doing. It can mess yor system up good!! Feel free to post your hijakthis log to any forum really (there are a ton of hijakthis forums). There are tons of people who can tell you what keys should go. or email unbipper@yahoo.com (no spam) :(
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.htm
-------------------------------------------
For a great browsing experience get firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/download.html

A great secure browser that is not owned by microsoft - and there for rocks. Besides that fact - it allows tabbed browsing, very css friendly and w3c standard compliant. Meaning you will see the web the way it should be. (No css hacks for web programmers ;) yay! Firefox has a host of features i think you would like.

I hope all of this helps you in your fight against the internet :)

Trojans are usually used to gain access to someone's personal data and could be used for identity theft. Zombie virii are used for widely distributed attacks against a powerful server (generally something in the government or a big corporation.) Virii that just destroy your computer are used for mayhem.

A lot of times hackers and coders have mental disorders (like aspergers) or are just highly intelligent people, but these lead to a lot of social problems. However, it also makes them brilliant coders. They can spend long times obsessing over small bits of code. Let one of these guys get bored enough and they'll write whatever they're curious enough to get running. I think a lot of the general mayhem-causing virii are written by kids that are just bored.

Then, of course, you've also got the scriptkiddies, who search on Limewire or whatever it is the kids use these days for virii they can install on their friends computer. They don't know how to properly use it, they don't know how it works, but bam, your computer just got infected by a twelve-year-old dumbass who goes to school the next day and tells all of his friends that are actually more naive than him that he's now officially a "hacker."

God I hate scriptkiddies.

Eh, I'm done ranting now.

Nice generalization... I have hacking skills - but i am mostley sane... so i thought.

I am more into testing my websites vs injections, and paging through ram for some projects i work on. I am a programmer so it is only natural to know the enemy? Right?...

omg.. I'm fu#$#d up!

I'm not really trying to call hackers or coders crazy, but in a lot of cases, personality disorders attribute to their dedication to this kind of stuff.

Not all of them are like that, of course. I don't want it to seem like I'm saying that, if you're dedicated to writing code, you've got a mental disorder. However, some of the disorders allow them to focus heavily on single tasks, which is obviously a plus when wading through pages of code.

I hope I explained myself well enough - it's hard to put what I'm trying to say into words without sounding like I'm lumping everyone into one catagory.

anyone who likes to have viruses on their computer is not human. no one likes their property being screwed up because someone else thought it would be funny to make it that way. i have yet to find a person who enjoys viruses and i personnaly hate hackers. its the same with glitchers on online games. some people the first thing they do is try to find what glitches are out there. that pisses me off to no end. i'd just like to smake them with a large bat (or a fish, something) and ask just what the **** is wrong with them.

I love them. Only stupid people become their victims, which happen to be the Firefox crowd and blame Internet Explorer and Microsoft as a whole when it was really their own fault. :D

So yeah, more power to hackers and viruses.

I'm only being partially sarcastic.

lol I'm a scripter and program a lot of things.PRogramers are able to hack as well.Anyway there is a hackers underground on mIRC.The biggest one is on the DALnet server. REally big hacking community there.
Everyone knows this.Anyway theres also a scripting community on DALnet that really hates the hackers on DALnet. They are really pissed at them blah blah blah. They jsut back door each other one after another taking out each other's PC's like its some kind of computer wars.

Anyway I hate hackers also so lets burn them all!!!!!!!!! :magus:

The level of ignorance in this thread amuses me.
What about just hating the hackers that do bad stuff? Just because you know how to do something, doesn't mean you have to do it. I know how to kill someone, that doesn't make me a killer, does it?

bipper

Nothing ignorant about it. I am a hacker to a point. I only hack my own stuff to find faults. I understand hacking, and hackers still piss me off.

Hacker has more than one use. Its a name for a coder, one who tries to infiltrate systems, change programs, or even commit computer crimes for self gains.

Its has synominous words, and the people who attack other peoples sh@# are the types being attacked here. Anyone who disrespects someone else property that much - deserves the bad wrap.

But the ingnorance in your post was the best thing yet! Most of us are just flaming the bad hackers. (Black Hats)

Eh, white hats? White hats were generaly those who are against the evil hackers (weather it be Black, er red; I have even heard of green hats - which fit more into what the quote was - inderectly making money off hacking. Never really met someone who does that though lol) White hats are generally not evil haxors :) weather they be hacking against black hats own computers, or just hacking for minor fun they usually stay peacefully as happy hackers:) lol

Anyways, there are so many different hats now, it aint funny. I bet there is a rainbow hat out there who attacks people by thier sexual identety... who knows.

and why would they want to put viruses on your computer when it's so *EASY* to get you to do it instead?

Great point - lol. And why would white hats make viruses when High school scriptors make plenty of em! :)
