I did not have a PlayStation when FF8 was released. I bought it a week ago. What were the pro and anti-FF8 arguments? At what side did you stay in the polemyc and why? I read on Wikipedia that nobody liked or disliked FF8, people just loved or hated it!

Awesome game. My favorite FF, actually.

Play it in its entirety, then judge it for yourself. Be sure to take time to fully understand the junctioning system.

My favourite of the series ^^ As stated above, take time to get into the abilities and junctioning system, and spend some time understanding every aspect of the story. I think thats why alot of people dont like the game as much as the others in the series, because it's not a traditional storyline.

Oh my god. Final Fantasy 8 was the only Final Fantasy game that I have ever played and been hooked on. I've tried to play FF7 and FF9 but they just couldn't do it for me like FF8. I have played/beat FFX but FF8 is still the best game out there for me!

But the first time I played, I didn't understand the junctioning system or any of that and I really suffered from that. So like everyone else said, take your time playing it so you get the whole feel from it.

That's that. :D

you dont need to understand junctioning, really.. i beat it my first time iwthout ever junctioning magic to my stats, but the missle base was fucking haaaaaaard for me.

if you dont understand junctioning fully, my advice is to read up on it, find out where and how to get good spells, and stock up on them. if you want to know, you can msn me right now at rhymeslayer@hotmail.com or send me a pm.

back to topic; i think a lot of people hated ffviii because disc 1 was so excellent, the characters were literally thrown into every event and it all connected so nicely. disc 2 was like "oh, lets go to FH now, ok?" "oh.. why dont we go find the white seed ship?".. granted the white seed ship is significant to the plot, but i think square couldve worked it in better.

also, people might think squall is a knob.. ffviii has the best battle system, imho.

my fav but not the best. ff7 is best. junctioning was easy. i always went by element or such (gf's) and pushed auto-strength. tee hee

Anti-FFVIII arguements:
-Underdeveloped characters and two overly developed ones.
-Drawing magic was boring, and people didn't like the Junction system because they so much enjoy the Materia system/are lazy.
-The story was based in large part around a love story.
-The single cheesiest and stupid plot twist in the history of time and space.
-Squall was not the most likeable character, and his 180 into suddenly being in love with Rinoa was not done very well.
-A main villain we meet all of twice and don't even know about until disc 3.
-Omg, lets summon Eden during every single battle. Yay!! *dies*
(and I'm sure there are more)

Pro-FFVIII arguements:
-Great graphics, awesome music, etc etc (other various good aesthetic stuff)
-The junctions system was cool and original, and allowed for uberness rather early in the game.
-Good battle system.
-Triple Triad
-The story was based in large part around a love story.
-Very interesting and unique main character.
-Laguna
-Good general story, despite its plotholes and cheesiness.
(and there's other stuff)

I love FFVIII, but I can totally see how FFVIII is an aquired taste, and some people just won't like it.

I loved it. Especially the junction system. I got zell's strength super high and he did up to 100,000 damage during duel!!!

LOL. SeeDRankLou, you've practically listed all the reasons I didn't like this game. But you've also listed the reason I played the game which is Laguna.

[biased generalization]

One thing you might want to consider is that about 90% of the people who hate FF8 are madly in love with either FF6 or FF7. People who liked F6 hate it because it wasn’t classical enough for them, and people who liked FF7 hate it because it doesn’t have Cloud of Sephiroth. The other 10% hate it because they suck.

i.e. can't get their head around the abstract and out-of-this-world idea known as the junctioning system. :p

SeedRankLou very aptly summerized the strong and weaks points but I'd add the SeeD rank system as a negative. It's the only thing about FFVIII I really disliked. :mad2:

It seemed like an inspired idea at first: get money from a regular salary instead of getting it from monsters who don't have a reason to be carrying money. But it was badly done, especially because it's difficult to go off leveling your party without getting demoted. That why I level as much as possible before the SeeD exam, before rank comes into play.

I can deal with the other weaknesses and the strengths more than compensate for them. It's still my favorite 'numbered' FF. :)

It's my least favourite of the series due to most of the reasons SeedRankLou listed. Mind you, I don't believe it's a bad game, just my least favourite.

What irked me mostly was the underdevelopment of most of the characters. I would have preferred if they didn't focus so much on Squall and Rinoa. I wanted to know more about the others. The only character besides these two who's had some development whatsoever was Laguna.

I'm a sucker for love stories, hopeless romantic and all, but this one just made me go "blah". It could have been done more tastefully. I mean, come on, loner guy suddenly falls in love with the cute but spoiled gal? Sheesh, where have I seen that before? Oh, right, high school, and about 50% of all the teen movies (other 50% being the rich, popular guy falling for the introverted and unpopular girl).

Junctioning was tedious if, like me, you are lazy, but overall, it was a good system, and not very hard to use if you paid attention to what magics you were junctioning, and the weaknesses of the enemies you were fighting.

The salary thing, while more realistic, was a bit annoying at times. Most of the time, your SeeD rank would drop while you were leveling or doing sidequests. Urg.

Don't get me start on the many plotholes and Ultimecia. Oh, and Rinoa. Did I mention how much I hate Rinoa?

So, yeah, many things that annoyed me in the game, hence why it's my least favourite. It's still a good game, though. The setting was original, the junctioning system was quite refreshing, the graphics were gorgeous, the card game was very entertaining, and it had a solid basis for the story. Too bad it wasn't exploited to it's full potential.

I know! I mean, is it so f@#$ing hard to understand?! You have magic, and you can use it to increase your stats. You also gain abilities through equipping GF's. There, why do people have trouble working that out? I mean, they give you tutorials for Christ’s sake!

Actually, the more you battle your rank should go up.

When you walk through places and don't battle, it'll go down. That's why when you're at rank A, you have to stop every time you get paid and fight ten battles so you don't lose your rank when you walk around.
