SEOUL, South Korea - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play online games on Aug. 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

I'm sorry this had to happen again, but I knew that it was a Korean person before I even opened up the thread.

That video games are bad and evil and make Baby Jesus cry.

The next time you think about playing games for a really long time, you might wanna remember this. I wasn't aware that even an activity involving little exertion like video gaming could kill someone from exhaustion.

I ought to do this just to be like "I'm not Korean and I'm crazy!" xD

Actually this isn't the first time. Someone died playing Dance Dance Revolution. He collapsed after getting some ridiculous combo in nonstop mode and never got back up.

Maybe it was the combo for the fatality?

I am sad for the man and his family, as it unfortunate that he died while simply having trying to have fun (albeit in a rather excessive fashion). However I won't deny that I do find this completely legendary. What a hardcore mucka.

Hoax'd.

Any normal person would stop to at least drink or eat, yes I know, a Korean gamer, but I really do very much doubt that it's true.

The same story was spread around a while back, it's the same thing just with a few minor changes.

would probably die from the drugs that might enable playing games for 50 hours, but not just from playing the game.

edit: merged the EoTW thread into this one.

Wouldn't that mean that the company is makin good games, and its his fault for not having self restraint.

If you read your games manual it usually says that you shouldn't play more than 6 hours a day and should make a 15 min break every hour. I guess he didn't follow the rule.

Now seriously, I think it was his heart problems that caused it. Normal people don't die from getting tired, they fall asleep or go KO, but they do not get heart attacks. Well unless it was some very exciting game.

The hoax would hav been even more believable if they said he was playing Starcraft over there. They play that game hardcore. It even has it's own tv channel.
