It's legal to smoke underage - so long as you're smoking tobacco, that is;)

However, the person or shop who supplies you with the cigarettes is breaking the law. That's the law in New Zealand, anyway, and the UK and NZ have basically the same laws in a lot of respects.

oh come on Yams, "I'm just holding it for someone else" is a universally recognized and acceptable excuse.

Well it isn't a lie if you're a drug dealer.

Posession and usage, in the US, is illegal if you're underage.

This is how I see it. The law is only effective when you're not at home and underaged. So that means you can't drink legally at a restuarant if you're underaged. As for smoking, you can smoke underaged in public outside. Inside the house, it depends on the parents. Most parents would rather don't want their children drinking and/or smoking.

Smoking inside buildings, especially homes, is usually frowned upon because of the risk of something catching fire.

If you're at a restaurant with your parents, they can buy you a drink.

I know the law for drinking states that so long as your parents supervise you, you can drink underage. I don't know how it is for smoking.

(/me fails at law.)

Not really, the waiters do ask for IDs for age. They're not stupid enough to give an underaged customer alcoholic drinks, even if the parents are buying the drinks.

It's illegal to purchase alcohol for minors.

Yes. It's illegal to purchase it soley for them. But if you buy it, you can still give some to a minor so long as you're their parent or guardian, and you supervise said drinking.

Yay loopholes!
