This worked out really well for me last time; I got to hear a bunch of cool bands and revisit some old ones I had nearly forgotten about. So I'm gonna ask again: Write down a band and give a few (around three or so, not hard-and-fast) must-listen songs by that band. I'll start off.

Atmosphere
- Always Coming Back Home to You
- Bass and the Movement
- Godlovesugly
- Reflections

Blackalicious
- First in Flight
- Make You Feel That Way
- Release
- Day One

Black Star
- Respiration
- Brown Skin Lady
- Definition

Coldplay
- Don't Panic
- Shiver
- Spies

etc etc etc.

The idea is for you to preview these bands by listening to these songs, and decide whether you want to listen to more. If not, you at least might end up with their few good hits. :)

I'd like to see more Beta Band, UNKLE, Minus the Bear, Franz Ferdinand, Hanson Boy Modeling School, as well as some more diverse genres - I need more good soul and gospel music, especially. Oh yeah, good modern jazz like MMW would rule too.

Medeski Martin & Wood
- Bloody Oil
- Reflector
- Midnight Poppies/Crooked Birds
(all off the new album)

Lounge Lizards
- Yak
- Scary Children
- John Zorn's S&M Circus
(more awesome new jazz)

The Walkmen
- Thinking of a Dream I Had
- My Old Man
- The Rat
(good indie rockish band)

also, Atmosphere is good.

Beta Band
- Pure For
- Dry the Rain
- Out-side

UNKLE
- Bloodstain
- Unreal
- Guns Blazing
(these aren't necessarily must listen to, but I know I've already suggested the ones I know are musts to you, so here's some different ones :P)

Gorillaz
- Feel Good Inc.
- El Manana
- Every Planet We Reach is Dead

MC Lars
- Hey That's Me
- Mr. Raven
- Hurricane Fresh

The Lawnchairs
- Generation Y
- An Asteroid Anytime
- Generic Feeling
(all of their songs can be downloaded free on their website)

MC Chris
- Ratz
- Fett's Vette (the universal gateway song that gets people into MC Chris)
- DQ Blizzard

Seriously, I don't know any of those bands... except Coldplay.

I gave up limewire to collect albums and believe me, it was so worth it. If an artist makes that great of music, then they deserve the respect for their listeners to at the least pay for their hard work(it's harder to write a song that goes together with all the other instruments).

Pop, Truth with Elegance and Drowning utterly devastate those few, and though I do love Cerebra, if you want an early song then the Different Demo is where it's at.

Models for the Programme and Sick Happy smash Three of Clubs and Slow Song out of the arena too, especially when performed live.

Well, I was going to add Pop, but I dunno. I figured those would be easier to download as an Introduction to HR, 'cause they're mainly singles and all. I was just listening to Pop, actually. I wanted to add Kill the Silence to the HIFH list, but then I already had four. Sick Happy is good as well, but it slipped my mind when I was making the list. But I haven't heard that much of them, so I could only give what I know B) The last time I saw them live was ages ago, and the main thing I remember is sitting on the floor at the side of the venue with the singer from Kinesis stood in front of me.

Lindy

Pop needs to be listened to by all because PAUL NEEDS LOVE JUST LIKE COLIN >=(

Also, Sick Happy is the most insane song ever live.

Last time I saw them, despite having jumped around like an energizer bunny hooked up to a car battery, Justin still had the energy to jump on James' back and scream out the last few lines as well as ride him around while he was still playing the bass.
Combine that with Joe throwing drumsticks into the crowd, and the roadies tossing water bottles all over the place, and the crowd screaming along and just generally being insane, it was the best damned thing ever.

xD So does Larry. Larry is cool. And yeah, HIFH was a great live show, as were all the Hundred Reasons shows i've seen. They're great live, I love it, no flashy lasers or any crap like that, they just play loud and hard and passionate and it's great. In fact, I went deaf in my right ear for about a year after seeing Hundred Reasons the second time, I think because Andy's bass was turned up so loud and it was right next to my ear.

Lindy
08-17-2005, 05:29 PM
Damnit, I didn't get Paul and Larry mixed up did I? I can't remember properly...agh.

I've only seen Hundred Reasons once, that was the Astoria gig just before the Shatterproof release and tour, XFM Award show gig I believe, I was really lucky to get a ticket.

That and they were supported by thisGIRL, Coheed&Cambria and Thrice, oh jesus that was a good gig.

I've seen HIFH about five times though, and it gets better every time XD

Anyway, as ever, I should suggest some Ok Go.

Get Over It
Unrequited Orchestra of Locomotion
Hello, My Treacherous Friends
Return

Then there's stuff from the new album which isn't even out yet, so I'll put that separately.

Oh Lately It's So Quiet
Television, Television
Crash The Party
The House Wins

DK
08-17-2005, 05:35 PM
Nah, Paul is the singer on Pop, well the main singer anyway. Larry does the "No excuses, will make this worth it time again" bit. But he's just cool.

The best HR gig I saw was at the birmingham academy with some random pop-punk band who I missed, Kinesis and Sparta for support, and that was awesome as well. I saw them when they had Biffy Clyro for support as well, that was ace. It's the same with HR actually, they get better every time I see them. Actually I think the Biffy Clyro gig was for the shatterproof release. Oh wait, it was after. Yeah, never mind.

Nightwish
Phantom of the Opera

The Klaw
Michael Dudakoff - American Ninja

The Strokes
Late Nite
Is This It
Hard To Explain

I'll add more later.

Biffy Clyro were supporting on the Shatterproof Tour, I remember because I stole one of the posters. I was gonna go see them at the Astoria on that tour, but the ticket was like, Ł20 or something, and I had less of an urge to see them at that time.

Brand New
Guernica

Good To Know If I Ever Need Attention... (freaking long title, even by my standards)

The Strokes
Late Nite
Is This It
Hard To Explain
(I'm still working on the list, I'll get back to the third song later. Or someone can help me. My Stroke music collection is limited)

It's "Ok, I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't", and "Good To Know If I Ever Need Attention All I Have To Do Is Die", I have the names imposed upon my mind along with the lyrics for every song.

Personally, I'd suggest "The Quiet Things That No-One Ever Knows" over Guernica, and "Jaws Theme Swimming" over Good To Know, I love both songs the songs you suggested, but the two I've pointed out are a touch easier for people to get into over yours.

And The End Has No End is probably the greatest Strokes song ever.

Nice.

Saw MMW at the Newport Jazz Fest a few days ago. Holy crap. Probably
the best day of my life. I'd say some must hear songs are
Dracula
Bubblehouse
and my favorite, the song that they ended with at the Jazz Fest, Queen Bee.

Their studio stuff is horrible compared to their live stuff, so if you want
MMW, get some lossless bittorrent shows from bt.etree.org or get some
live MP3 shows from www.nugs.net

Also, eest, you should check out some stuff by Zorn, Medeski, Ribot and
Martin. They've done a few shows together and they always come out
awesome.

You don't HAVE to post all crazy weird made up bands, if you don't want. Here, I'll give some more "mainstream" ones to get more people into it. :D

Cee-Lo Green
- The Art of Noise
- Gettin' Grown
- Die Trying
- All Day Love Affair

Actually, turns out Cee-Lo isn't as mainstream as I thought he was. All my friends have heard about him and listen to him a lot, so I thought that was true across the board. Guess not.

Incubus
- Drive
- Pardon Me
- Aqueous Transmission

Definitely a well-known band.

Led Zeppelin
- Whole Lotta Love
- Since I've Been Loving You
- Stairway to Heaven
- Houses of the Holy
- Trampled Underfoot

Hard to narrow them down, because they're so classic.

Madlib
- Slim's Return
- Funky Blue Note
- Young Warrior

Actually, you may not have heard of them.

Queen
- Bohemian Rhapsody
- Another One Bites The Dust
- Fat Bottomed Girls
- Somebody to Love
- Under Pressure

Queen is awesome.

See? Not that hard. Don't feel intimidated; submit what you like. :D

Good list, but I'm guessing you've only heard Fabulous Muscles?

Okay, now my suggestions.

Set Fire To Flames
1. Fukt Perkusiv/Something About Bad Drugs, Schizophrenics And Grain Silos
2. Sh*t-Heap-Gloria of the New Town Planning
3. This Thing Between Us Is A Rickety Bridge Of Impossible Crossing/Bonfires For Nobody

Animal Collective
1. April And The Phantom
2. Kids On Holiday
3. Grass
(And bascially, the whole 'Feels' album. So good.)
