I think most people are a little of both. it really depends on the situation sometimes.

To my friend's annoyance, an optimist. I see the good side in everything.

Example:

A large meteor, somewhat like FF VII, is approaching the Earth. I turn to my friends, and say: "Well at least there will be no more laundry to do". Then they utter my name with utter exasperated fustration, followed us all getting squwished by the large chuck of space rock.

depend on the situation. Like today, i got a low mark on a test, so instead of getting to mess around on the computers, i got to, along with half the class, revise it all. I only saw the bad side of that, cause i was in a bad mood. but if it just involves me in my head, i try to be optimistic, cause no1 else will no wat im grumpy bout, and i dont wanna make ne1 worry, optimisim is always best, but only at the right times.

Which, in translation, means that I tend to be pessimistic, but I also think that being pessimistic sucks. (But I don't think I utterly suck though...)

But really, it depends on if its being filled or not. if its being poured, its half-full, if its being drunk, its half empty. simple as that. but it will never stay half-whatever, unless its warm milk. nasty stuff
