Both are legitimate transliterations of the original name in Japanese, but I like the sound of Aeris better.

Aerith - it seems more, suiting. Like Air head and death in one word. Which sums up her character.

I like Aerith better. In fact, whenever I see "Aeris," I just think "Aerith" in my mind. It just fits.

I only use Aerith when I feel particularly "fanboy"

At all other times, I'm fine with Aeris. I swing both ways though *wink*

It depends on if I want to use her name in the possessive tense.

Aerith's looks better than Aeris' or Aeris's

Aeris. Aerith sounds like you have a lisp.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you pronounce them the same way. :)

And I prefer the Aerith, I think. I don't know. I don't really have a preferance.

It's pronounced the same way in Japanese; since Japanese doesn't have a 'th' sound they often use 'su'.

Like the surname 'Smith' comes out 'Su-Mi-Su'.

I pronounce Aeris distinctly different from Aerith when I say it out loud in English.

I knew her name should be Aerith long before I played the game.

I even changed her name to Aerith the first time I played.

I still can't think of her as anything but aeris xD

Aeris and Aerith are both equally correct AND pronounced the same way.

The Japanese don't pronounce "th" as th, they pronounce it as s, so I say "Aeris" fits better. In America, "Aerith" isn't Aeris, period. Then again, the Japanese would pronounce "Sephiroth" as Sephiros, although his name actually has ties to the real world.

I like both pronounciations. But ill vote Aerith since most people will vote for Aeris :D

The choir in One-Winged Angel pronounces his name as "Sephiros." Anyway, I usually call the girl "Aeris". With Finnish pronouncing. :D

Aeris. Aerith sounds like you have a lisp.

That's what I said the last time one of these threads popped up. Proper pronunciation aside, westerners are going to speak it like they see and read it, so it's an Air-Iss vs. Air-Ith situation. I like Aeris better both written and phonetically.

ok im gonna type what i read on a site

There's been some confusion over the two names Aeris and Aerith. Most people think of the 'Flower Girl' as Aeris, while a few remaining old-timers persist to call her Aerith. Why!? How come!?

The answer's pretty simple. Aerith was the name of the 'Flower Girl' in the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII. The lucky people who imported Final Fantasy VII before it was translated have stuck to that name ever since. When FFVII came to English shores, the name Aerith was changed to the more smoother Aeris. Hence, that is why the 'Flower Girl' is now popularly known as Aeris Gainsborough.

Apparently there is even yet ANOTHER variation of the name 'Aeris' in FF7. The Japanese programmers behind the game originally called her 'Earith'. As I peeked into the files of Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation), I discovered the game internally refered to Aeris as Earith. However, it would be fair to assume Earith is the rough equivalent of Aerith.

also...

The 'th' is pronounced more like an 's', and hence Aeris and Aerith sound quite similar in Japanese. It is fairly popular in Japan to say 'thank you' in English, but it'll often come across as 'sank you'.

so as u see is a bit of both

Sephiroth wouldn't stab someone with the same last to letters as him! So there's no way he'd ever stab some chick selling flowers named 'Aerith' (I read almost every post before I posted this, so I already know the Aerith and Aeris are pronounced the same)

Aeris. Aerith sounds like you have a lisp.

and aeris just comes out easier.

I never liked her...

aerith, cos i didnt really think she was a little cutie pie flower girl, i thought she was just erm....a flower girl, and aerith sounds civilised and like a name made by an ancient race anyway, thats just wot i think.

aeris looks better, its not a matter of pronunciation.

its also more efficient for lazy people like me, one less letter :D

on a side note, try playing a ff game and call a character (particularly garnet in ff9) f**k me. it is hilariously funny, seriously.

Aeris is what I first knew the character as and that's what I'll call her. Plus I can't pronounce Aerith properly (I say it as air-riff)

Aerith has always been Square's official romanization. "Aeris" was a cock-up on the part of Sony, who translated FFVII. All the same, however, I have a soft spot for that particular cock-up.

What is it with all these people who can't speak properly? Aerith is NOT hard to pronounce! Well, maybe if you're Japanese etc., but I'm assuming that most of the people on these boards aren't.

It's just like Edith, or Tanith, or Aldith, or Judith, etc.
