Why did Squaresoft change their name to Square Enix? I personally liked squaresoft better it has more of a software sound to it. Which one do you prefer?

They changed the name to square-enix because they merged with enix, duh. I thought everyone knew that... If this sounds mean sorry, but there are so many threads about whether enix is ruining square (which is totally nuts) that I'd think yo'd know that.

i like both comapanies but i dont like having to heifenate the word everytime i type it out, simply square-enix takes longer to type than squaresoft, so i guess i like squaresoft. but square-enix hasnt made enough games yet for me to comapre the two compaines

You don't have to hyphenate it since there's not supposed to be a hyphen. It's Square Enix.

I like the name Squaresoft better, sure, but who cares? It's just the company's name. I'd much prefer to see them flourish with a more powerful organization like they have now (I'm assuming) post-merger.

Just because they merged doesnt mean they have to keep it the name, it depends who the majority share holder is, for example when White Star Line merged with Cunard they became Cunard White Star, until Cunard bought all White Star Line share's so they effectively didnt have any say at all and vanished into cunard, Cunard then changed it name back to Cunard, and got rid of its competitor and all there assets. Squaresofts betetr, and you never know what the future has in store.

They just called it Square enix so everyone knows that they merged. Not everyone liked square, and not everyone like enix. This way it was like advertising to the enix fanbase:)

Better games were made under the the Squaresoft name. But Square-Enix hasnt really made anything big yet. FFXII is gonna decide it to me. For this is the future of FF games. So FFXII is kinda the series turning game.....
I think Sqaure-Enix sounds better myself....

The Squaresoft department is still making all of the Final Fantasy series, just as the Enix department is still responsible for Dragon Warrior, Star Ocean, and the like.

Which reminds me, since everyone likes to blame Enix for it, might I remind you all that FFX-2 is ALL SQUARESOFT'S FAULT.

The Enix department had nothing to do with it.

It's more than that. FFX-2 was completely finished and released (in Japan) before the merger ever even occurred.

Mergers happen overnight.

Mergers take at least 20 business days. Regardless of when the merger was prosessed, even if it took five seconds, it doesnt make a hill of difference because, as has been stated, Square still works on Square stuff and Enix still works on Enix stuff. It is simply a financial benefit, not a team mix (excepting, of course, in things like Imadoki Street Special).
