I was just curious as to how many people out there can actually touchtype because I myself can't and I always seem to be too slow when replying to people on various forms of instant chat. So I was just curious if I was like the only one that can't touchtype on the internet and whether it was worth the bother of learning?

Typing without looking at the keyboard basically.... There's a specific way to do it where you have your hands in a certain place and you hit certain keys with certain fingers.

I type without looking at the keyboard, but I don't touch type in the way that people are taught.

After years of using computers I've just memorized where all the keys are. Not intentionally. :rolleyes2

Yep, one day I woke up, turned on the comp and suddenly I was typing while watchin the TV...

The freaky thing is I know when I make a mistake even when not looking at the screen and fix it automatically :p

Sometimes I do that but I'm not that good...

Althought in my school and my future job, I'm have to learn it...

I tried to do that but I still always find myself looking down at the keyboard. I CAN type without looking reasonabley well but I make so many mistakes that it's not to my advantage at all.

I can type without looking at the keyboard quite fast, I kindna know the layout of the keyboard by heart.

Good point, i don't look when I type but i often have a lot of errors here at home. I have a clutter :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: of a desk :) Phones, books, etc... so yeah; I spend more time maneuvering these objects to get things done.. My office is a mess...

I can type without looking, but when I first started using a keyboard, using "hunt and peck", I was reasobly fast at it because eventually I leared where everything was anyway. Then I took a class freshman year of high school, and learned how to type the "right" way.

Yes I can touchtype. As a matter of fact I wrote this post with my eyes shut.

It's a little more difficult with my eyes shut but I can do it reasonably quickly.

Touch type? So basically this is typing correctly?

Yeah, I guess I do. I never ever ever look at the keyboard while I am typing. I don't see the point.

Yes, I can.

Touch typing is idiotic and painful on the hands, why keep your hands in the same place if you can be more flexible?

I use memories of the keys and peripheral vision to type, it's easy enough.

Touchtyping can be much faster, though, and it's not so hard on your hands of you've got a pad, or your keyboard in the right position, etc. Some keyboards are actually split apart, some even into two pieces, to make it easier. I always have my keyboard slanted...sometimes I even put a book or chunk of wood or something under the back to slant it even more.

I can type without even looking at the screen, even if I make a mistake, I can usually correct it. I rock like that.

Actually, to clarify, I don't look at the keyboard, but I type with two fingers, not two hands. :) Two hands is hard for me, but I can still type very fast.

I can touch type. I can't really look at the key board when I sneak online in the middle of the night anyways XD

...I didn't say that and you didn't hear.

I've been typing for a while so I really don't look at the keyboard. Took a while transferring from a normal keyboard to a smaller laptop board but I've done it. (:

Now I can but it's because I've used the keyboard for a while now. I don't need to look at each key seperatly now as I know where they are but I seem to type better in light.

typing is the easiest thing in the world, it seems, sometimes.

If I think hard enough, I can type nearly as fast one handed or starting on the wrong letters, etc. It's a bit of a challenge, really, I guess.

After years of using computers I've just memorized where all the keys are. Not intentionally. :rolleyes2Basically, same here. I will look at the keys sometime, but I don't have to. Over the years my typing has increased - I still make a ton of errors (I am constantly pressing delete) but I think that stems more from having large fingers than from actual skill with a keyboard.

I never could adapt to the "standard" typing procedure they tried to teach me in school.

I haven't looked at the keyboard while typing for several years now. From what I'm told, I type faster than most people. I once thought that making up my own way of typing was just as efficient, but now that I type the correct way, it's not.

Yeah we had typing classes a long time ago in school, I felt really bad because I couldn't do it very fast when I was younger, so I went out and bought me a typing program to help me learn. Now I can average 80 wpm. ^.^ I always keep my hands in a row, it seems easier that way, oh and I ALWAYS keep my eyes on the screen.

I've also gotten really fast at text messaging. :) It's crazy.

I can't type if I look at the keyboard and I really wouldn't be able to even keep my job if I had to do that because most of what I do is type and I think that would be very distracting and time consuming. I don't even ever have to look to find the backspace key. :)

Touchtyping may well become one of the most needed skills in the modern world, along with driving and the ability to use a computer at all.

Same. Formally, they usually teach you to type using all of your fingers in weird locations, but I've always typed using primarily my index fingers, with my other ones used for most of the function keys, like enter, shift, etc. In typing class, I always had the highest WPM by leaps and bounds even though my teacher generally shunned my typing style.

I only ever really have to look at the keyboard for the characters you get from pressing shift on the number keys. I can usually figure it out, eventually, after a long trial and error, but when I don't feel like going through that I just look.

I just look at the keyboard when I've had my hand off of it for a while.
