don't miss Zelda (esp., A Link to the Past)! i played some, but look how far it's gotten. Dark Cloud is quite new, but very adventurous.

Zelda: LttP is for SNES
i also don't consider Zelda an RPG

However, Super Mario RPG is awesome for SNES
Breath of fire series
Phantasy Star for Genesis
Actraiser series
Lufia series
Lunar
SAGA series

There are a number of good old RPGs, if you're going to play them on emulators, just go to a good ROM site and look at the game category and try any old RPG you find, some will be bad, but a lot of them are good.

Classic SNES crap to stay away from:

Tecmo Secret of the Stars
Drakkhen
Paladin's Quest (This one is debatable)

Good RPGs yet to be mentioned:

Secret of Evermore (SNES) - My favorite SNES RPG.
Final Fantasy Legend (Gameboy) - SaGa series was mentioned, but this one is my favorite of the ones I've played.
Final Fantasy Adventure (Gameboy)
Crystalis (NES, GBC) - I recommend the GBC version. Almost exactly identical, except for a final boss switch and it's PORTABLE.
Willow (NES) - Amazing for a movie to game NES RPG.
Alundra (PSX) - If you can handle puzzles or have a FAQ handy. I forget if this game has stats though. Been too long.
Soulblazer (SNES).........\
Illusion of Gaia (SNES)....} in this order
Terranigma (SNES)......../
DragonView (SNES) - Nobody plays it because it's predecessor sucks. It has very awesome MMORPG like battle mechanics where 1 or 2 levels can make all the difference between life or death in battle.

Paladins Quest for SNES. I've seen lots of RPGs but none were quite like that game. One thing that stands out in it is that there is no MP for casting spells but rather they consume your own HP. Also the battles were different from most rpgs I've played and it can actually be quite challenging. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to try something new for a change.

Xenogears. Check back with me in about a month if you've beaten it by then and I'll suggest a few more.

Xenogears isn't really "old".

I would reccomend EarthBound for SNES after you beat that.
