EoFF Newspaper

Well, hello there, members of EoFF.

As you all know, I'm Lenna *smiles sweetly*, and I have a proposition for you!

After discovering that there is no "ongoing" newspaper for our beloved EoFF, I have decided that I wish to start up a newspaper based on the activities of EoFF itself, gossip about members (this information will be taken from General Chat not EoEo I must stress. Anything that is not found in General Chat, or doesn't have the permission of the member stated will be automatically dismissed.), comic strips, information about upcoming competitions as well as competitions already taking place, and any other piece of worthy information that you feel would be relevant to this place.

But, Alas! I cannot do this alone!

This newspaper will be completely web-based, not in any threads on the forum. I will set up an LJ community for those who are interested in reading the paper, and I shall set up a specific forum where we, the hard workers, can debate over what goes where, who get's what etc. ;D

At this moment in time though, I wish to find out who would be interested in signing up to be a reporter or a comic strip artist. Although you may find some people will have set duties, you will also have the opportunity to rotate but this has to be agreed by the other reporters/artists.

So sign up now! Either say in this thread that you wish to be part of it, or PM me if you wish. Regardless, I will put a list on here for all those who wish to be part of it.

Secondly:

Can anyone think of a good name for it? ;)

This list is of those who wish to take part, if the list gets too long, we may have to do a mini competition to narrow down the members (get the reporters to write a small news article and let the members vote for the best, but we'll also see how many other jobs we can fit in ;))

Can I just remind everyone that this is a huge community. There will be people who can speak perfect English and others who will struggle.

I would like, if possible for those people to have some part in it as well. I will not leave them out because they can't speak perfect English, as there are other jobs that can be addressed.

In the end I want a mixture of everyone possible.

I run my own site (proper hosted and own domain). But the webpage will be the newspaper itself, so the page wont be in any relevance to the site. So it'll most likely be on there, as I have no limits to my hosting etc.

As for what'll be in it, if you read the first post it tells you all that.

No problem, at the moment I'm just really taking names down of the people who would like to be part of it, to see the numbers I have. Once that's done we'll start seeing who gets what etc. :) Although if there are too many reporter we may have to narrow it down, but I'm aiming to give everyone who wants to take part, something to do.

I can code on Dreamweaver a bit and I can make layouts, but many people can make better ones, so if no one else wants to help with that, I can.

Sorry my beautiful EoFFers. I've been away all day Saturday at King's Island, drove home 2 hours, arrived at 3AM, craziness, but well worth it to see two great friends.

I'm honored that so many of you recommended me for this, and I will take this job with the utmost seriousness that I can. There is a fine line about reporting that I actually do understand. I at one time wanted to major in Public Affairs Journalism, but switched to English instead, so I have a very BASIC (VERY) understanding of how it works with reporting and I can edit well.
This will take a lot of coordination, communication, and commitment. Mine, in two weeks, will be lacking some, as I am going back to school, moving in, starting classes, and going to try to find a job. It'll probably be those first two weeks of school - when figuring out my schedule and what I need to do and when I have free-time - that I won't be on a lot. Though, I'll try my best.

I'm speaking with Lenna now via MSN, and we're talking about numbers and people getting involved, and whatever. I believe we don't need a whole lot of people involved or interested yet. What we have now is a good starting number. I figure, if we can get a few good articles in the first edition, cartoons and the rest can wait if not ready, then we have started successfully. It's okay to start small, get people interested gradually, and I think it'd be a good process. She's decided to leave this up for a few days, make sure everyone can see it, then, we'll start the project.

Hosting wont be a problem. As I've mentioned, I have my own website which is actually hosted by my mate Daniel (not from EoFF), Atm I've only used about 30mb of it all together and I have a fair amount more. So the hosting is not a problem.

Well, the entire purpose of a scout is to balance what the Reporter does. A reporter doesn't always have time to check up on leads and get interviews. They do, but they need help in organization, usually, every reporter has 1 to 2 scouts, but that's only after it's large. In the beginning, the Reporter usually does everything on their own, but because it's a smaller thing, it's easy to do.

Also, I never started the EoFF Newspaper persay, i just reported during the elections and the terrorist attacks on EoFF.

If you can do that, Rye can do the colouring in, as she's stated in one of the previous posts. You'd have about a week and a half each time, but bear in mind they'll only be like newspaper cartoons, about 5 boxes each. It wont be a completely huge comic strip.

We're looking for something original, outlandish, and unique (Psy, Meat Puppet, TUH, Manus -- we're looking for great submitions from you). Though the paper is affiliated with EoFF, the title of the paper does not have to contain anything dealing with the forums. It just needs to be witty, classy, tasteful, and humorous, hopefully.

Once we've done that we'll most likely make a start on the Paper itself. We'll have 2 weeks each, well for the work it'll most likely be a week and 4 days. So we have enough time to gather things up and get them up onto the site for our deadline. 2 weeks shouldn't be too much of a hassle for people.

I wasn't aware of how many names we had gotten, but these are the names we've been submitted in this thread. I think when we finally decide (and are organized enough) Lenna and I will go through, sort out the bad from the good and have the vote on the good ones.

Also, at first, many of you want to help, though for the first few issues, we may not have positions for you right away, as we're going to have to get used to it and figure out what we need etc. Start small and grow is easier than starting big and shrinking. Though, never fear, everyone who wants to help will sooner or later have something they can contribute and will.

I for one, am not entirely respected by everyone here as much as she, and for this, she was right to start it. I will invest time into this, because it is a great idea, it's great practice for a serious writer, such as myself, and it'll just be interesting to see how the community responds.

As for now. I have a feeling we're going to have to put a lot of people who want to help on hold for the first few issues.

To be brutally honest and blunt, a lot of people will want to help, but I'm not sure if they realize some of the work that they will actually have to do. Sure, this is just an online paper for our local forum, but we want it to be good, and worthy of being affiliated with EoFF. Because of that, we are going to reserve the right to reject people's help at anytime. Some people may get lazy, and while I haven't talked to Lenna, I think she'll agree that when this happens, we simply say, thanks for the help, come back when you're ready to reinvest time in this. Also, you may want to help, and we may not like what you have submitted. Even if you've been helpful and we've taken and published your work, don't expect that because you've been in the paper that you will be in every issue. We'll take the best stories, as many as we think we will need, and put them there. If your's does not make the cut, sorry, but that's the way it is.
A lot of people, at the beginning, I think will be put on the back burner, a waiting list. I'm not expecting the first few issues to be full-scale greatness, just the start, to get the fundamentals down, to check talent, etc.

Don't worry yet, we'll let everyone know when this gets started. It'll be a little bit before the first issue is released. So all of you wanting to help, we will let you know. But don't be looking now, as I said, we'll probably downsize the immediate staff at the beginning simply because not everyone will be needed. Not that you won't have anything to do with the paper, you can still vote on the name, however, we're not going to need you for any writing of stories and what-not. However, as this project goes along and grows and (hopefully) is popular, then we'll definitely add on as needed.

Let's also note that sometimes, the news has dry-spells. There may be times where the forum isn't the most busy, and then our paper is going to be smaller and that some stories simply won't be printed.

Also, one more thing. We're planning on setting up a forum for the newspaper staff. With this, hopefully we can avoid confusion when this thing starts. Many times, reporters won't communicate with eachother, will write stories over the same events, and then only one is published. In our case, that forum will be where the reporters request events to report on. Basically, first come first serve unless we, the editors feel otherwise.

I may seem like I'm being Nazi about this project, thanks to Manus... but I just know how these things get. I was on Highschool Newspaper class; I know how journalism in the very basic ways, and I want this to be a success.

Can I just say Marick, I already mentioned to UDH that I will be strict on deadlines. There is no way I'm going to let people let the rest of us down. I will ask for deadlines to be taken seriously and if anyone doesn't have a really good excuse to miss a deadline then it'll be a warning. If it remains continuous, then you can guarantee you'd be removed from the staff, letting anyone else who has the devotion to do this.

I'd also like to say that do not get any idea's yet please, do not start writing any information yet. We do not know when this will start. Although we want it to start soon, gathering information now etc will be pointless as it may turn out to be "old news".

As BoB has kindly said we can use our own board on Aiyon, we shall do that, but I'm afraid that for a short while, we will need to use a temp board as Aiyon is currently inactive/down. This would just be a small invision board or something. Just to get us started.

I would like each reporter/writer to post their idea's for a story up on this board, and also then give a draft of what they will put during the end of the first week. This way we can proof read etc and see whats wrong before the deadline of the paper itself.

No, no one start writing stuff up.

None of you know what jobs you have at the moment, so please do not start writing anything as it may be good to you and get turned down when you find out you have another job with the paper.

Anything you are going to write up, MUST be approved by me or Marick. That's where the forum comes in. You will post your idea's there, we'll tell you yes or no. If no then you will have to find another story.

The way I see it, we'll have don't know if Marick will agree but I'll speak to him about this later, ignore the numbers of how many are in. {This is the basic idea I have. To give people a random image of what it'll turn out like}:

About 3/4 Main reporters (big stories. Approx 500 words (I'm not good with counting so just assuming atm :P))
Approx 6 Small reporters (random spam/general stories. Approx 150 words.)
2-3 Puzzlers (About 6 different types of puzzles)
2-3 Cartoonists (we'll discuss how big the cartoons will be.)
5 Scouts (to gather information from the people)
3 Spell checkers / Proof readers (make sure no spelling / grammar errors ;))
2-3 Graphics Artists (to get / create pictures/images for the stories stated)
Not to mention the introductory page with bits from me and Marick xD

Remember, this actually will involve a lot of time and dedication. It's not too late to ask to be off the list.

Also, there will be a roll call. We know not everyone will be there all at once. So I figure Lenna and I will pick an amount of time for people to join up before we choose the name. Stragglers, sorry, but we sort of want to start the project, and TUH wants to finish the lay-out.

Right. This thread will now be closed by BoB, as the paper will no longer be looking for anymore volunteers. If you do, however, wish to join, you will have to PM either me or Marick and we will put you on a waiting list where if any member of our staff doesn't meet the requirements, we will then have enough room to hire someone else.

Atm the moment as I have already said, me and Marick will now sort each member into groups of their jobs for the paper. Myself or Marick will post this list up on here. Once you have your job title, you are required to do the work and meet the deadlines. If you do not then we have the right to remove you from our staff.

Other than that we will contact you as soon as possible <3
