I was over at another message board and there was a thread about "What kind of gamer are you?"

The poster asked if people were "Casual, Mainstream, or Hardcore." Why must people feel the need to label things?

I put something like "It's self-righteous to label oursevles. As long as you are having fun, you are a gamer."

Abd someone got all offended and called me a mainstream gamer for that. And gamers wonder why the public doesn't take them seriously...

Placing the word hardcore in front of anything is a bad idea. When it's a word that most people translate as 'unsociable geek' then it's even worse.

Because different gamers are into different things? Fact is, I treat games differently from the guy who has an Xbox, Halo, and has a multiplayer game for a couple of hours a week. It's not derogatory or... a suitably intelligent sounding anotnym of derogatory to be either, it's simple fact.

I'm a casual gamer in a hardcore sense. No wait. I'm a hardcore gamer in a casual mainstream sense. I grew up on games and yet it takes a rare and excellent game to keep my attention anymore :D As for why? Because it gives people an idea of what you're like. Labels are for stereotyping personalities. Get enough stereotypes on you and people get a better feel for what you're like. Right or wrong, it's all for reference sake.
