View Full Version : Announcements useless?!?!?

I think there needs to be a better way to get announcements noticed by people, which is evident with the new sticky message in this forum. There needs to be something to make people notice it. Seeing as how the annoucement is always static and on top is it feasible to make the background an animated gif that changes colors...kind of like a siren. But only for the first few days it is new. I think it would grab attention a lot better.

One thing is clear. Something should probably be done when you have to make a thread to tell people to read the annoucement.

What about a sortve feautre that can send a message to all members but cant be responded too. It would be way more noticeable.

Easy: anyone who makes a post/thread which goes directly and obviously against something a recent announcement covered is banned immediately.

Quiet, this way we could trick him into getting himself banned. =D

Er, I mean.

It probably wouldn't be hard to instate a code that would cause a popup show up on screen notifying people of new announcements, in the style of the PM notifier.

In the same vein of ease, you could just pay attention to the annoucement bar every now and then.

How about we come to your door and tell you when there's a new announcement?

I don't think I like this idea much because I'd end up making all of your house calls. :cat:

Perhaps like in a width of a week, at the top of the forums page (but below the Eyes on Final Fantasy banner) there should be a box telling the new announcement(s). Everytime somebody logs into EoFF would immediatly see that, and if they dont, they are dumb.

Did I make any sense?

Yamaneko
09-14-2005, 12:34 AM
But it's the dumb people that really need to see the announcements.

Remind me to make an announcement with the text of "If Raistlin reads this announcement, then he gets banned"

Sound good?

PM it to every member on the board. Six times.

I never go into specific forums. So I never see the Announcements. I almost exclusively use the "New Posts" link, and I also abuse the heck out of going to my profile and looking up threads I replied in that have had recent replies. Important stickies usually show up in the New Posts. Announcements however rarely do for some reason. Fix that and I'd be more apt to look at them ^_^; I mention this stuff because I'm probably not the only one that navigates the forum this way.

I think the problem here is that I made the announcement in the Feedback forum only, rather than a global announcement.

I also just noticed an embarrassing typo in the title of the announcement...

Maybe the announcement thing can have a different color if there is a new once since you've signed on last, like the way the folder for the threads change color when there are new posts. Or, we can have a line on the forum index that describes recent announcements. Are these ideas good/feasible?

Wouldn't it be possible to have a New Annoucements thing pop up just like the Calendar events such as the Ciddies? I think that's what Del was talking about, and I don't imagine it would be very hard to do. And it would be much easier to spot.

A different color, if possible, would be good. Especially if you have several colors that you just cycle through so that people don't get used to it.

I thought announcements were meant for the entertainment of the few of us who like to read them.

Yeah I really liked that fact of the day. I was disappointed when there wasn't a follow up.

I would do a fact of the day, but there's no way I could beat Kishi so I don't think I will.

Kids! There's nothing more cool then looking at announcements by someone you like! But when someone makes an announcement that makes you feel uncomfortable, that's no good! It's only an announcement. No one has the right to make a bad announcement. So what do you do? First you say, "Make it better!" Then you say, "Please?" Then you get out of there!

Hawkeye

I admit looking at the announcements are fun to see, and I think its neat everytime I see a new one

As long as it doesnt have to do with anything directly or indirectly concerning me, that is

Yams...its a parody of Sonic <s>Sez</s>Says! Although the orginal is about being molested.

Anyways I like the color change thing. I never notice forum specific announcements and it is usually a week before I notice a new one anyways because it is always just there like the banner.

eestlinc

forum specific announcements are pretty dumb. we should just make all announcements global.

Leeza

Yes, all global, but with colour. :cat:

EDIT: Blinking and flashing colour.

In large bold letters on eoff forums home write: READ THE MOTHERF***ING ANNOUNCEMENTS BEFORE POSTING OR YOU WILL BE HUNG, DRAWN, AND QUARTERED (with extreme predjudice)

Blinking, flashy, multi-colored stuff looks gawdy. ( I feel sophisticated saying that :) )

I don't think the problem is people not reading the announcements so much as not caring what they say. If it is viewing them, I like Murder's suggestion with it changing like the new posts in thread do.. Maybe we could put a chocobo up there like the forums index page or a new image that changes after being viewed?

I don't think the database currently keeps track of who's read which announcements in which forums and when to be able to do that :p

edczxcvbnm
09-15-2005, 12:39 AM
No. Just make so that when a new announcement is posted it has a flashing background for like...48 hours or something. Then there really shouldn't be any DB problems.

Who wants to make the 172800 second long animation?!

edczxcvbnm
09-15-2005, 03:16 AM
That animation would only work if you had the page loaded for that long of a period of time. If you reload the animation would start over. It would need to be like an if when the page loads up and references the date posted with the current date to see how long it has been then decide what background to use. Normal or flash :D
