Well, technically, you just do 65535 HP worth of damage to him. That'll do the trick. Of course, he'll probably just heal himself. :p

The levelling system in FF9 is such that you can still cause loads of damage at low levels, as long as you have decent equipment and have levelled the 'non stat dependent' attacks like Dragon Crest and Thievery up to 9999 damage. So just do that and you'll take him down easily.

As I said, as long as you take him down quickly, you'll win.

by quickly he meant get loads of attacks that can do 9999 damage and haste to kill it of quickly before it can do some serious damage.
