View Full Version : Smilie suggestion (serious) (not really about smilies anymore.)

I actually went searching for this kind of smilie here in a GC thread that made a particularly revolting comment, and was shocked to realize that EoFF did not have a *bangs head against the wall* smilie, despite how often one could be used. So I went and stole one from another MB.

Hmm... sometimes that kind of smiley would be good, but it could risk turning into one of those "inflammatory smileys" - the kind people use when they want to be awful to one another without actually posting flame. The :rolley</>es2 smiley ( :rolleyes2 ) is an example of one we've already got which has that kind of effect. It tends to get used frequently as the "omg u r dum" smiley, and that's what could easily happen to a head-bangin' smiley.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head and telling you to read the threads in EoTW, Wes. Besides, who needs a smiley when you can just do it yourself?

The border around the face could use some work. You have our permission to use that smiley as an image link, Raistlin.

I'm talking about GC this time. I only go into EotW when I want to be amused. And I actually posted "does EoFF have a *bash head into the wall* smilie?" being facitious, but then I thought "hey, EoFF could really use this smilie."

Kishi: xD That works, too.

EDIT: And I only use :rolleyes2 when someone's made fun of me, or just made an intentionally absurd remark. It's meant to be humorous, not mocking.

This is a better version of the one WesLY posted: <img src="http://www.ffwa.org/forums/images/smilies/argh.gif" align="absmiddle" />

Although I like the shading on WesLY's version. I'd make a better version of that but I frankly can't be arsed :smash:

No, I think that a lot of the smilies suggested are just for the sake of having a smiley reflect every possible situation. If you want to bang your head against a wall, find a wall and do so!

I don't think Samus and Simon should be available and public to the entire member base unless you want tons of them at the end of every post just because they're there and running or dying.

When you feel so frusterated over something that someone said on a message board that you want to bang your head against the wall, that could just be God's little way of saying it's time to unplug the computer and take a walk outside.

First off: I agree with this. But not in the sense you mean.

Secondly: However, something I've never understood - why, when something is said over the internet, is it "less" than what is actually said offline? The aforementioned frustration stems from hearing/reading the same hashed "facts" over and over under different names and motives. Why is it perfectly okay to feel irritated when something is heard said or read in a paper, but not read over the internet? Is the internet world somehow less real?

Yamaneko

Because no one cares what you say or think on the Internet. Or at least I don't, and that's all that really matters.

I care what people do on the Internet exactly as much as I care for what people do outside of the 'net: not much.

Because everyone on the Internet is a moron, duh.
This is what people always say, but people offline are just as stupid. Probably moreso, because on the Internet, at least, you have to be competent enough to use the computer. And the idiots who aren't competent enough to type correctly are easier to ignore than the idiots who aren't competent enough to speak correctly.

I never understood the "arguing on the Internet is dumb" argument. It's no more or less stupid than arguing offline. A discussion is a discussion, whether written, spoken, or typed.

EDIT: Also, the "arguing on the Internet is dumb" statement is typically given by people who want to feel superior by implying their superiority of being "above" arguing on the Internet. The same logic could be applied to the "everyone on the Internet is dumb" statement.

What about implying your superiority of being 'above' arguing anywhere? And applying that logic to make a 'everybody in the world is dumb' statement? Would those be ok?

I just realized that the 'arguing on the Internet is dumb' argument is a contradiction. Neato.

What about implying your superiority of being 'above' arguing anywhere?
Just as bad, definitely. Probably even more irritating offline. Sometimes I don't want to debate, simply because I don't want to, for a variety of possible reasons, but not because I'm "above" arguing.

And applying that logic to make a 'everybody in the world is dumb' statement?
Just as bad, really.

I never said arguing online is dumb, that's fine and dandy. But getting upset over someone's opinion, no matter how stupid it is, for a lack of a more PC word, is retarded. Who cares if they are acting like their opinion is a fact and that anything you say is wrong? They are the moron, not me, so why should I be upset? I simply laugh it off and see the comedy in the sitiuation. Life's too short to be offended or pissed off by somebody's opinion, and yes, that includes opinion's from both online and offline.

Also, one thing you must understand about arguing on the Internet: 99.5% of the time, no one's opinion is going to change because of you. As long as you accept that, have at it.

Raistlin
10-02-2005, 04:40 PM

Absolutely. But that's not exclusive of the Internet.

Who cares if they are acting like their opinion is a fact and that anything you say is wrong?
I would actually hope they would act like their opinion is a fact. But that's another discussion entirely. :)
