View Full Version : Re: Leet (omglolz) Speak

I realized this the other day, I think it was because I was looking at it a
different way. Where I used to think it was sort of funny, I'm finding it to
be annoying now. But here's my idea:

It seems to me that leet speak is used by people to poke fun at the people
on the internet who actually talked that way. Maybe leet speak isn't the
correct term for it, maybe "retarded gamer/AOL user" is more fitting. I'm
not necessarily talking about H4xX02 5p34K, but the whole "lolz teh
omg!!11 i trad itam 4 sexx kkthx" thing (though they seem to go
somewhat hand in hand). That's all well and good, people who talk like
that should be made fun of anyway. But then I realized that there
aren't many people, indeed there are very few who genuinely talk like
that (even in Diablo). So now we have to wonder why so many people
use it in a parodic sense when the people they're making fun of are
far...FAR fewer.

The conclusion I've come to is that the people who think they're making
fun of others are in fact the only ones who are actually talking in the
way that they're making fun of. So it seems the joke is on them.

This has been Optium's essay of the day. Thank you. :p

This stuff is way more genuinely abundant in the RTS scene, there are a LOT of people talking like this because they seriously think that it's cool. But yeah, I mean you're basically right beside that, leetspeak was way more popular a few years ago before everyone started mocking it.

I honestly think that leetspeak can still be used in a very tasteful manner, as a reference to geek culture. As an example, I consider this guy a geek hero:

I don't use it to make fun of idiots, as they do that all by themselves. I use it whenever anyone has an idea that I don't like. "OMG LOL LETS DELETE EOFF ROFLCOPTER!!!!!11111!!!"

I'm going to be a great politician.

I notice the occasional "omgroflsex0rs1!!111!111" from well established, supposedly mature members of EoFF who should really know better. ;)

It's usually directed at newbies who simply can't type.

I think that the 12 year olds who were using the internets a few years ago have grown up some. (In other words, us) However, we were around back then for that whole scene and make fun of it because we experienced it.

the funniest thing about people who type in leet (or l337) speak on games such as counter strike theyre then like "hey no fair you shot me whilst I was typing one sentence" to which the only sensible reply is WTF STFU fool!
