My characters are at about the Lv.65-70 mark, with the exception of Zidane who is up to about Lv.85 obviously because he hardly ever leaves the team and has gained the most EXP throughout the course of the game.

One of my favourite aspects of Final Fantasy games is to level the characters up so they become stronger, and although levelling up in this game has no effect on characters stats, I still want to build on their HP, but on this game, I find it takes to long to level up, and thus it's very time consuming, and overall, not much fun.

Where would you say is the best place to level up once near the end of the game? I've been messing about by Gizmaluke's Grotto and beating the Grand Dragons with Quina's 'Lv.5 Death' spell. This gives me like 10000+ EXP with the 'Level Up' ability equipped, which is quite good, but it still takes quite long to level the characters up when they reach about Lv.60.

Anyone found any better places to level up, or have you just given up when you got to a certain level because it's too time consuming/boring?

yeah wanna get up to 100, 000 experience per battle?

theres an island called Vile Island (the BIG island in between Outer and forgotten continent) the island carries creatures called Yans. They are somewhat difficult to beat
(22,000 HP)
but they give a whoppin 42000 per Yan and usually u run into like 3 so u do the math
but it is 100,000!
wanna know y?
cas the Yans can blow ur characters rit out of the battle field so that means the less characters the more experience for the remaining character
so if u have just zidzane and u beat 3 Yans ull get probably over 100,000
try it
ull see
2 levels up per battle **guaranteed**

Well, now that some good advice has been given... I like leveling up because it makes me think that the characters are aging, and I find the aging process really interesting and all that.

I like numbers. =[

The exp needed to hit Lv.99 is 6633167, so yeah, very difficult.

Yans give 42,673 each, not 8800. You're thinking of Grand Dragons.

levelling up too much in this game is pretty useless, although the Yans do give a good challenge.

Funny, I thought levelling was a cake-wake in this game. But really, you can easily beat the game at level 40-45.

I think I'll just get everyone up to Lv.70 then go after Ozma. I think I remember watching my friends fight the Yans a few years ago.. they inflict some kind of status effects which prevents you from recieving EXP if I remember correctly. Is there any way to stop that from happening?

They snort you out of the battle, and it sucks.

I leveled in Memoria, and I found that to be tolerable, although as others have said you don't really need to.

Not even for Ozma, you can beat Ozma at level 1.

Where can I fight Yams?

You don't fight Yams. You eat them ^_^

Yans can only be found on Vile Island, which is that little island west of the Iifa Tree on the world map with the odd square based pyramid-looking mountain on it.

I got to level 99 even without getting to Ozma. I didn't really find it that hard to level up, as I was always looking for somewhere new. But unfortunately, I knew not of the Ozma thing, so I just left the game after beating it.

Well, I got to level 99 in almost no time by levelling up in Memoria, you get tons of EXP there.

The Yans inflict the virus status which stops one character from getting exp. but that can be used to your advantage. When the exp. doesnt go to the inflicted character it goes to another charcter and that character can level up faster. On my best file for FF9 they are all level 99 and the time it took me was 93 hours and 37 minutes. No freaking joke. I know i need a life...The yans will counter with either snort or float. Their attacks are usually Meteor and Virus Powder. So here's what you can do: Wait in a battle until a yan casts virus powder on three of your characters. Then all the exp will go to one character, and he will get four or five level ups. Cast Death with Vivi and summon Odin with Garnet. When you are not using them have Steiner cast Shock and everyone else concentrate on killing one yan at a time. It could help to have auto life. I did that and it took me forever. But you cant find a better monster than the yans so start hunting.

for my lvling up, i just have everyone with level up and killed grand dragons. this made freya able to hit 9999 each turn for only 16mp (dragons...something. which is (amount of dragons killed)^2) and also it gives everyone 12k xp each kill. but i think behemoths give a single person 54k about of xp, so i might go hunting them.

oh, and i was level 52 when i first beat the game, couldnt be bothered to train up properly! hehe

It's like a party that people throw when their cake dies.

Yeah I had a cake-wake once. Then the Police caught me during the ceremony and arrested me for murder/cannabilism.

i thought leveling up wasnt too hard in the game. besides if you level up too easily then the game isnt even hard. in ff8 you gained levels so fast that i was on level 99 by the last battle and not because i tried too just by not running from a whole lot they just got there soo quick.

if it hasnt already been said (because i dont want to read through the whole thread...)

i use zidane's soul blade with masamune equipped, so it casts condemned on the yans:D they arent really as hard as everyone makes them out to be...i was in my 60s when i started training with them, got to the 70s in a day:p

levelling up is easy, if you know where/ how.:)
