Has anyone mentioned D&D yet? My brothers got me into that when I was like ... 6 and had no clue what was going on. But I sure loved rolling die.

For NES my list would be simple. Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. Until emulation came about of course

For SNES, also simple, as I got it very late in life. But with some prize games. FF4, Chrono Trigger. Secret of Mana, and FF6.

For Genesis. Bit longer, as I was on SEGA's team during the Sega Vs Nintendo wars. Shining series ruled. I had Shining in the Darkness. Shining Force 1 and 2. (And to note I had Shining Force Gaiden 2 on GameGear) Sega Channel helped me get into wonderful games like Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4. Sword of Vermilion. Arcus Odyssey <3 and Light Crusader. Oh and there was also the gem known as Landstalker.

I eventually got all those stupid ad-ons for my Genesis. 32x and SegaCD. 32x didn't have any RPGs that I know of. SegaCD had loads. Mostly Working Designs stuff. Didn't get most of them until way later off of e-bay though. But I have Vay, Dark Wizard, Dungeon Explorer, Shining Force CD, and Popful Mail <3

Then I moved on to my Saturn. Awesome machine. Some of the best and most overlooked games ever. A pattern that unfortunately relegated over the Dreamcast. For Saturn I had the awesomest game: Dragon Force. Also Shining Force 3 and Shining The Holy Ark. Oh, and Shining Wisdom. (I've played every Shining game released in America >_>) Let's see... Albert Odyssey, Blazing Heroes, and Panzer Dragoon Saga. I think that's it for RPGs. Lots of other great games though.

Then, not to feel left out, I got a N64, which had what? 3 RPGs? I played Quest 64 and owned Zelda OoT. Big freakin' whoop XD

Now PS1... Oh my gosh. Don't even have half the RPGs that interested me. But I'll try to list what I remember of the ones I own and have rented. Top of the list being Xenogears and FF4-9. Legend of Legaia. Grandia. Alundra. Wild Arms. FFT. Parasite Eve. Rhapsody. Jade Coccoon. Lunar: TSSSC. Tales of Destiny. And I rented a crappy game: Beyond the Beyond. Lots of stuff I missed out on though.

My Dreamcast ... It had few RPGs. I didn't get any of them. Unless Shenmue counts.

PS2. Here we go again. 2 Norrath games. A Baldur's Gate. La Pucelle and Disgaea. XenoSaga. FFX. Kingdom Hearts. Er wow... I think that might actually be it o_o;

Now GameCube x_x; Tried a few failed attempts at RPGs on this poor system. Didn't like Zelda TWW. Didn't like Skies of Arcadia :/ Tales of Symphonia couldn't keep me interested. So I didn't bother with whatever else

Now the system with my new favorite RPGs. X-Box has Kotor 1 and 2 and Jade Empire. Win. Also I got X-Men Legends for this system.

PC has Baldur's Gate. BG2. Awesome games. Played both Diablo games on it. And I think that might be the official end of my list. Though I could go into emulation...lotsa weird crap. Especially for SNES. Japanese games that never made it over. I finally got the chance to find out why.

Uh, Zelda is an RPG. You play the role of Link in every game.

You're really going with that as an argument as to why it is an RPG? I'd ask for an elaboration on it, but it isn't necessary.

And for the record, it isn't an RPG. The only reason Nintendo ever decided to market it as one (Ocarina in 1998) was because FF7 was so successful in 1997 and RPGs were the "in" thing. Ocarina is no different from Zelda 1 or 3 except that it is in 3D and that it isn't as good.

I specifically remember a Nintendo power issue in the late 90's where they were comparing and contrasting different "in" and "out" products for the new year. They wanted to market Ocarina as an FF7 killer, which thank god it never became, and the final section of that page was that in 1998 FF7 would be "out" and Ocarina would be "in".

Think about it. Did you ever hear anyone refer to the Zelda series (with the exception of the Adventure of Link) as an RPG prior to the release of Final Fantasy VII?

I'd say Adventure/Puzzle/Action, in that order.

Zelda is not an RPG, I've argued and proved my point countless times, arguing that you play the role of Link is dumb, is Sonic an RPG, you play the role of sonic, is Mario an RPG, you play the role of mario. Is megaman an RPG, you play the role of megaman. NO, in fact, Megaman released an RPG called Command Mission, that was an RPG, and Battle Network is mostly an RPG as well. Mario released RPGs as well, Legend of the Seven Stars, the Paper Mario games, and Superstar Saga. These were RPGs, not every other mario and megaman game. Is metroid an RPG, you play the role of samus. Is Halo an RPG, you play the role of Master Chief.

Saying that you play the role of someone does not make a game an RPG, so stop saying that people, if that were true, 90% of games would be RPGs, and pretty much every FPS would also be an RPG

Wow, easy there tiger. That statement was to be taken lightly, but I suppose there are some who consider this kinda thing serious business.

What is it, in your mind, that seperates an RPG from the rest? HP/MP/EXP doesn't determine the genre. An RPG is a game with a developed, non-linear world with room for exploration, and unravels a tale as you progress. Basically, there's a story to be told, and playing as the protagonist (Link, in this case) you go at your own pace and make it happen. If the game can be scribed as an actual story, then it's an RPG.

And of course, this is just the backbone, Zelda also has NPCs to converse with, important recurring characters that influence the story just as much as you do, and hey, a health/magic system in lieu of HP/MP. Just in case you're still sticking to your original story here.

Thanks, I had forgotten about Koudelka. :D And yeah, I'm very much a nerd. And a dork. And a geek, too. *Pride* :p Oh, and I remembered another one! The Granstream Saga!

At any rate, I would class Zelda as an RPG. Action RPGs, such as Zelda and Alundra, aren't the same obviously as 'proper' ones like the FF series, but they still have some significant hallmarks of the RPG genre. For example, sidequests. Upgrading equipment. Collecting pieces of equipment. Growing in power, and gaining new abilities.

To be sure, the lines between genres are becoming blurred. See Deus Ex for example. An FPS of course, but with strong traits of an RPG nonetheless. Because of the story side, and also the potential for choices and open-endedness which RPGs offer, it's very easy and reasonable for those aspects to be incorporated into pretty much every ther genre there is.

No i believe an RPG to be a game where you can develop your character/s how you want to, you control the character and decide how that character will turn out.
You don't do that with Link

So basically it's still stats that make the game. If it was all about character development, then the Tony Hawk Underground and Amped games (to name a couple) would count as RPGs too, would they not?

The story element is what makes an RPG, character development is just something that's been, well, developed over the years.

NO actually, Dungeon's and Dragons, the Board Game, was what RPGs are based off of, and well, the Dungeon master(any random person that time you played) completely made up the story, in fact, there didn't even need to be a story, but you chose your character and devloped it how you wanted playing the Role of that character and making it your own, that's an RPG

You never see any games these days that are just wandering dungeons and levelling though, do you? I know there was a simpler time (look at Final Fantasy 1), but RPGs have become so much more since then. There's nary an RPG nowadays that doesn't have a storyline. Even MMORPGs (good ones, anyway) have a backstory and a changing environment.

You're given the role of Link in all the Zelda games and basically make his outcome your own. Whether you decide to get a full two rows of hearts or play with three, use no magic or all magic, go with brute force with sword in hand or fight strategically with arrows and bombs, outfit him with the best stuff or be a minimalist, carry 4 faeries or one blue potion, that's all up to you. However Link's legacy unfolds, all the finer details are in your hands. That's an RPG.

GTA can be argued as being an RPG, even if its ties to the genre are really weak ones. Personally, I don't think GTA's story holds enough water for it to make for an RPG, but whatever. You can argue whether or not GTA counts, but with the facts presented, I believe Zelda is still an RPG. And from the look of it, so do a lot of other people.

So you're saying that GTA's plotline isn't strong enough to be considered an RPG, but Zelda's is? Let's not confuse swords and sorcery with an automatic by into the realm of deep plot.

A medieval tale does not entail a plot with RPG depth. The Legend of Zelda has a laughably shallow plotline. One can effectively argue that the plotline is the weakest of all development aspects of the Zelda series. People see that almost everything about these games are extraordinary (not I), and so by association, they believe that since all other aspects of the game are good the plot is somehow magnificent simply by association to the game.

Proof: Look how well Ganondorf did the the GAMEFAQs villain tournament. Second place. Mind you, this wasn't GANON, the staple villain of the Zelda series, but Ganondorf Dragmire, who is not an icon, but merely a success by association that was brought to fruition by the Ocarina of Time.

I'll bet if they did a "Best VG music ever" tournament or a "Best VG storyline ever" tournament, Ocarina of Time will still place second in each.

And by the way, Metal Gear Solid, which isn't even an RPG, destroys it in terms of depth and complexity of plot. Therefore plot is not exclusive to RPGs. That's like saying good music is only exclusive to dancing games.

So you're saying that GTA's plotline isn't strong enough to be considered an RPG, but Zelda's is?
Zelda may have a weak story as well, but at least the adventure element makes it interesting. Unlikely hero saves princess from evil warlock and saves the world. More acceptable to RPG freaks than "mob favor, mob favor, destroy mob for other mob, rinse and repeat, the end", I think. Go to GameFAQs (which you seem to be familiar with) and count how many more serious discussion topics there are about the Zelda games than the GTA games.

I didn't know Ganondorf had a last name. The game certainly doesn't tell you that. You must have been intrigued enough to read into some finer details of the game's concept that you claim isn't worth two in the first place. Can you tell me the names of all the women Tommy encounters in his stead? Can you tell me how Vice City ties into San Andreas in terms of story? Can you tell me the motives of the gang opposing Diaz in Vice City? Of course not, because plot in a GTA game is so horribly useless that no one wants to read past the shooting and blowing things up.

Also, Rockstar decided to replace Tommy Vercetti in San Andreas, despite his growing notorioty. I guess Tommy wasn't so important that he had to be the icon of GTA. The coming of the new guy is proof enough that GTA is all about the bang-bang-boom-boom, and all the main character is is a body through which to make it happen. If you replaced Link in a Zelda game, it wouldn't be a Zelda game at all. Gamers pick up a Zelda cartridge/disc to play as Link, not the sword he wields.

Thank you for playing.

Go to GameFAQs (which you seem to be familiar with) and count how many more serious discussion topics there are about the Zelda games than the GTA games.

The adventure element makes it interesting because that's exactly what it is. The story is told through the exploration and adventure. Hence adventure game. It's more acceptable to RPG freaks because some people are so dogmatic in their thinking that they believe RPGs should cater exclusively to the medieval settings. I'm willing to bet that is one of the reasons the Phantasy Star series failed so miserably in the long term compared to Dragon Warrior. To me setting is setting. Unfortunately many people don't think that way, which is why the market is overrun with D&D environment clones, while kickass games like Xenogears and Xenosaga fail miserably. As far as serious discussion goes, you can blame that on demographic, not development. GTA is aimed at a much broader audience, 12 year old kids and jocks inclusive. Zelda is aimed at an audience that has somewhat of a general liking for and dedication to video games.

I wasn't actually intrigued by the Zelda plot when I found that out. I wouldn't waste my time on it. I actually got that information from here. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441877/)

Some joker had submitted false actors to the cast list of the game as a prank and was showing it off. He listed 50 Cent as the voice actor for Epona and Richard Simmons as the voice actor for Tingle. One of the listed characters was none other than Ganondorf Dragmire, and my memory took it from there. Good try though.

And last name means absolutely nothing concerning the depth of plot. The Jaquio from Ninja Gaiden's full name is something along the lines of Garan de Marideaux (it's been at least 6 years, I don't quite remember). Countess Elizabeth from Castlevania Bloodlines's full name is Elizabeth Bartley, an obvious allusion to the Hungarian Countess Elizabet Bathory.
Hell, the two Contra dudes' last names are Rizer and Bean. What do all these games have in common? Not very much plot.

And no, you're absolutely right, I can't tell you any of that information on Grand Theft Auto. I can't because it is like Zelda. Hardly any plot. I have desire to defend that game's merits, nor have I ever decided to do so in the first place. I don't like it any more than you. Like Zelda, it pretty much lacks in plot, but makes up for it in other elements.

That's one way of looking at it. Another way would be to consider reusing the Zelda characters in every game as Nintendo's complete lack of desire to develop any sort of new plotline from the game, because they know people will buy it based off it's other selling points (the adventurous gameplay and the series stability). They've already demonstrated they can sell the series without having to come up with any sort of plot at all, so why bother if that isn't what the people who play the Zelda series are after? And yes, people who play the game want to play as Link. That means they're intrigued by the story, not the plot. And you simply, absolutely cannot argue good story to be an element exclusive or prevalent in RPGs, because it just doesn't work.

Thank you for playing.

Now please hold in reset while turning off power. If you don't, all the data that has been recorded up to this point may be lost.

I agree with you. That viewpoint claims that games such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and KOTOR are not RPGs. The fact of the matter is, despite what this gentleman claims, Action RPG is a perfectly valid description of some games, such as those (Not to mention Alundra and Zelda.) So is Strategy RPG, such as FFT and Vandal Hearts. Much as he'd hate to admit it, games can combnie more than one genre, and not all games fit neatly into some pigeonhole. Indeed, by attempting to do that he projects an air of extreme foolishness and elitism, whilst simply accepting that a Strategy RPG is different from an RPG which is in turn different from an Action RPG.
