gunblade have you read it?
for all of you, the book was written in the 1950's and there was a game of blitzball in it. It was about these guys who would run around with a medicine ball and hit each other and take it away and stuff

ive honestly never heard of it
but square does have a nack for stealing things from real life things i.e religion (shiva, leviathan, Eden, etc)

If Blitz isn't taken from this book, its could be taken from the play in football (North American football), called the "Blitz". That in turn is taken from the German word "Blitzkrieg", which was a name given to an offensive military operation. This military operation involved a lot of their artillary lining up along a country's border, and then all at once launching an offensive attack to overwhelm their foes.
So yes, its taken from something else.

The actual game is very much like handball though . . . I can't remember any differences between the two besides the number of players and the fact that it's underwater (duh :)).

I'd say it's pretty much water polo, but underwater, and with status effects.
