You can download <a href="http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?tag=txt">Ad-Aware</a> and <a href="http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=sb">Spybot</a> for starters.

Ad-aware and Spybot will catch adware and spyware, but generally not viruses :p But they're still good for the average user, since adware/spyware won't be caught by a virus scanner in general. Those 40 "new objects" are 40 pieces of adware found on your computer, and it would be a good idea to let the program clean or delete them :p

As for a virus scanner to run in addition to those two, there's AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/) as far as free and somewhat decent ones go :p

Adware won't catch anything. Ad<b>a</b>ware will though. It finds and destroys malicious adware and spyware (not virii) on your system.

To catch a virus, you need to get a virus scanner. As clout said, AVG is probably the best free one. There're also commercial ones like Norton and McAfee, but I'd recommend against them.

As cl_out pointed out, AVG is one of the best free virus search and protection programs out there. Highly recommend

I completley agree with the AVG solution! I use it on all my machines. I claim it to be one of the best (esspeccially the commercial version) I have ever come across. I recomend Spybot S&D above all else for Spybot removal. That paired with its Tea Timer is the coolest.

You see, viruses kill you, and spyware spies on you. simple difference that requires different approcaes and different programs to stopping them. browser hijacking is another problem on the net. This is mainly a threat to IE and Netscape browsers, but any browser is targetable. If you have been hijacked - you will recieve popups quite randomly even when your browser is not open. For these bastages, Hijack this works well.

HijackThis can be very helpful. You need to have some experiecnce to take use this program as you are esentially deleting regestry keys. If you ever need to use it, you can scan then Save A Log. Copy and paste that log into most any help forum, and I am sure someone can help you figure which keys to delete.

I think with all that protection, you should be relatively safe. Nothing keeps you safer than safe browsing with <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/">firefox</a> though.

If you don't want to bother downloading avg, which I don't know why you wouldn't, or if you can't, then there's the online http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

House Call wouldn't scan my computer because it says I need IE 5 or higher in order for it to do a scan. I guess that means that there is no need to scan Firefox? :)

It`s anti-virus programe that warns you about any virus or any spy flie you enter. I`m not sure about the website, but write in the goggle(Kaspersky lab) and you will find it.
