It only took a day, but now the Florida Bar Association has recieved complaints that may prompt them to review Thompson's file and license to practice law, according to Ars Technica. Apparently enough fans of Penny-Arcade called, emailed, and faxed the FBA to register their disapproval of Thompson's tactics following the Penny-Arcade incident. According to one caller who posted on the Penny-Arcade forums, the woman who answered the phone sighed deeply at the name "Jack Thompson" and said, "Dear Lord, what has this man done? That's all we've heard today all day long!" Another poster wrote in to say that he was told the staff of the office were holding an emergency meeting to handle the situation.
While it warms my heart to see gamers taking action as a community, I also agree with Mike "Gabe" Krahulik when he says that Thompson is a straw man, easily replaced. But I'd still rather see intelligent, reasonable discussions of violence in videogames from someone who is at least knowledgeable, someone who actually cares about videogames and wants to make them better, not someone who lies to the press, passes himself off as some kind of expert, and insults the gaming community with every breath.
No way of telling if anything will happen, but at least the wheels have been put into motion. I'd love to see his license taken away.
On the other hand, I'm kinda scared who would take his place in the fight. Next time, we may not be dealing with a complete moron.
