European spelling is the correct spelling.

Why? Because:

The word "colour" originated in Europe. It comes from the Queens Language.

Americans were just illiterate at the time and dropped the "u" some where in the Atlantic. by the time they realised how terribly wrong they were it was too late to admit the folly. So, to fool all the other illiterate idiots they simply devised spell check and masses and masses of morons were converted.

As I've said before, any country that uses a horrible word like "cheque" and pronounces "lieutenant" as if there's an "f" in there somewhere when there's obviously not doesn't deserve to have an opinion about anything.

It doesn't matter how they pronounce it. They made the damn words up and if they so please they can pronounce Raistlin. "Raflin."

If you think about it, your new funky ways of saying lieutenant as if there wasn't an "f" is far more awkward and unheard of. Letters are meerely symbols with assigned pronounciations.

Point in case:

w is pronounced v in some languages.
k is pronounced ghhhhhhh in another.

Furthermore, pronounciation differs from city to city, state to state, country to country. So really, that detail is obsolete considering spelling which should excercise uniformity through out all English speaking communities.

But it doesn't.

So meh.

Silly Americans! You should have at least learnt the English language before driving us out of the country.
Or maybe it was someones rebellious nature that made the spelling go all wrong.
"Dude, wouldn't it be totally hardcore if we took the 'u' out of colour? I'm pretty sure that would piss off the Queen!"
"Fuck, you are so RATM!"

What the hell is the problem with different cultures having their own unique spelling variations? American English and UK English have evolved separately over number of centuries. What do we possibly gain by deciding that everyone should be exactly the same?
US English was 'cleaned up' a couple of hundred years ago, and letters deemed unnecessary were cut from a number of words. Hence Marlboro and Pittsburgh instead of Marlborough and Pittsborough, as well as everything already mentioned in this thread. But erroneous spellings like "one" (which bears no resemblance to how it's actually proncounced) were retained.
Neither system is better, neither system is right, they are simply different, and people should just accept that instead of whining about how everyone should be like them because their own country's got the most nuclear weapons, or whatever.

I'm rubbish at Russian, so I'm guessing that it's probably pronounced in English with the emphasis on the быль whereas in Russian it's pronounced with the emphasis on a different syllable.

Kinda like Борис. In English it's pronounced Boris, in Russian it's pronounced like Barees.

In Russian I believe that the emphasis is on the но, but I could be wrong as I don't do much Russian speaking anymore. Where the emphasis lies doesn't really make the letters sound different though, but the ь is like an e at the end of a word in English. It's silent, but it changes the sound of the syllable preceeding it. The ь changes the consonant preceeding it from hard to soft.

However, after looking it up, it seems like both versions of the word have a ь, so it just shows how terrible my Russian spelling is. :)

Long live colour, labour, neighbour, honour, lieutenant with an f and cheque. :cat:
