ive just in my second playthrough got to the bit where you meet laguna in person. odine comes up with a crazy big plan but also says something about ultimecia using his machine in the future.although ellone says you cant change the past why dont they change the future and destroy the machine that uses ellones power?

I wouldn't be too sure of that. I thought the same thing of Hojo, yet Hojo comes close to triggering the world's destruction. Sure, Odine may be a wimp, but he has quite a bit of power in Esthar, and I don't think he'd hesitate to use it to protect his inventions, because, as I said, he's a sociopath.

That is the dictionary definition. However, IIRC, the medical description is somewhat more in depth. Sociopaths usually have an inability to empathize with other people. They don't recognize other people as "people". That is where Squall is cut away from the group, he's just someone suffering from a traumatic childhood. Sephiroth, Hojo, and Odine all fall under this definition of sociopathy.
