I did not like ff9 nearly as much as I did ff8.
There are probably a lot of personal reasons for that.
Don't expect it to be the same though. Take it for what it is, a video game that shares some similar aspects to ff9, but a completely different atmosphere.

Yeah, so, I completely agree with rubah.
I, personally, think it's genius. And beautiful. But for every me, or every rubah, there will be a Flying Mullet.
Just play the game. ;D I hope you'll like it.

The best.
I haven't played FF9, but I bet 8 is better. At least it's better than 7 and 10.

No, it unequivocally and objectively is not better than VII or X. The story was OK, at least through the first half. The second half is when it simply stretched credibility too far, whereas another Square game will begin to get exceptionally interesting around that point. In addition, the battle system is absolutely terrible. Basically, all you do is summon GFs every move of every battle, and maybe heal every once in a while. Oh wait, you have GFs that can do that, too! Your stats go down when you use magic, and the physical attacks are worth next to nothing against any but the weakest of enemies. The problem with the system isn't that it wasn't derived from the type of battle system established in VI; the problem is that it just outright sucked balls. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You got it all wrong.
GFs are mainly used to learn abilities.
Magic is used for junctioning rather than summoning.
I actually really liked the battle system and thought it was nice to have something different for a change.

No, GFs are mainly used to mercilessly annihilate anything that stands in your way. Now, I don't have a problem with merciless annihilation, but I'd like more than one way of doing it. In VI, VII, IX, and X, for example, there were innumerable ways to wreak havoc, and bosses that actually posed a level of challenge. The fight against Yunalesca serves as a good example; there are a bunch of good ways to annihilate her, but you've got to exercise skill and timing in doing so. The Weapons in VII fulfill this role. It's a pity that there aren't more of them.

Merciless annihilation is far easier and more efficient to achieve by creative use of the Junction system. Why waste several minutes on a summon spell that does less damage than a few physical or magical attacks from a high-powered party?
I see your point, though - the first time I played through FFVIII, it took me a while to get the hang of junctioning, so I GFed my way through a good number of fights.

just like i said in your other thread like this. FF8 has amazing character personalitys and has a great storyline. i think its better than FF7 and even or above FF9.

VIII is the best. Having completed IV, VII, VIII and X, got to the last boss on IX and died choking on my own vomit and simultaneously falling asleep, and being about 3/4 through VI, I have a god degree of experience with the series. It was the first RPG I played, and enjoyd it massively. As for ???????'s comments, I barely ever used the GF throughout the game. It's all a question of how you play I suppose. I never get sick of it, love the storyline, love the characters and love the junctioning system. The story is really quite emotionally involving, and a sword will never compare with a gun-blade for pure satisfaction value. Slapping down R1 with each attack with Squall is about as much fun as you can have in less than half a second, and to my knowledge the only time in the series you get more involved in attacking than selecting the 'attack' command.
Also, Zell is God. In the beginning, there was nothing. So Zell created stuff. Then he punched it. The end :P

The GFs are still more powerful. When I was on disc three, it took no less than triple-casting Ultima to achieve the same level of damage as a GF. I've been intending to play it through again, though.

VIII is my definate favorite. Everything about it was awsome. I think pretty much everyone GFed their way through the first couple of times. But once you master the beauty and genious that is the Junction System, you only ever use the GFs to see the animations again since its been so long since youve used them. Oh and IX is my second favorite ff.

On the plus side, I don't think anybody can argue with the gunblade. Awesome freaking weapon right there.
I mean, honestly, I really want to like the game; the characters are one of its redeeming elements. I just don't have the kind of time right now that's necessary to get deep enough into it to enjoy it as much as some people are saying it's worth.

First, "unequivocal" means that there can be no argument about it, and "objective" means that there can be no clear cut way to define it: that it is essentially a matter of opinion. You can't have both. If it is a matter of opinion then it is something which can be argued. There are no GFs that heal. Unlike some FF games, the GFs can actually be damaged and killed (especially if you don't have high compatability), so just using GFs to wipe out the enemies won't always work. And the GFs are nowhere near as effective as the physical attacks, especially on some of the later enemies.
Sure, this game has some flaws, but your post was incorrect on just about every point.

the gunblade is probably the coolest weapon ever concieved, but if you play VIII and expect it to be as simple as IX, you will be disappointed

Great game. Great storyline, great characters. One of my 2 favorite FFs, up there with FFX.
Take the time to learn and master the junction system. This will make the game 100% more enjoyable.
And yes, the junction system is more complicated than FFIX. Like FFIX, its all about learning abilities, except your GFs (the equivalent to Eidolons in FFIX) learn the abilities, and you junction those once your GFs learn them.
Chances are, you will do a lot of summoning in your first playthrough. However if you junction properly, summoning isn't necessary at all.
As well, don't concern yourself with levelling up, rather focus on gaining AP, and learning the right abilities first.
And don't heed anyone who says: "I don't like this game, the GFs were stupid, and I didn't like the junction system, therefore it sucked." Liking this game is a matter of your own personal preference. If you love this game, who can blame you! If you don't, there are lots out there who don't.
The sidequests are great in this game, too. Great, realistic characters, an awesome battle system, a great storyline, and a great militaristic and sci-fi feel to the game.

FFVIII is unique, mainly in the battle system, which i believe is the best, because YOU can create your characters just like an table RPG. it's not that i don't like the others ffs, but i can surely say that VIII is the best.
I like FF8 pretty much. It's the first final fantasy game I have ever played and I created a love relationship to it instantly. I like the card game in it. It's wonderful! Also all the collecting possibilities you have in connection with cards. Just marvellous :)

Strangely, most people's beef with ff8 is that it's too easy to just run through pressing the attack button.
Of course that's what I did with ff7 and x both, games you hailed for their myriad of ways of killing.
The only GFs that can compare with the damage the players are able to put out in the later stages of the game are Cactaur, for the characters whose attacks are single hits, and Eden for those who are multiple.
A creative use of limit breaks is the best way to make individual characters' abilities shine. using Selphie's slots to heal and protect, rinoa to attack with angelo or angel wing, quistis to deal major damage with her blue magic, etc.
Zell is awful xD

Well if you like FF9 then you'll probably like FF8 a little less. I think that FF9 had a better presentation (i.e. better graphics and what not) but FF8 had better characters and storyline.

Well, it should be. I have heard stupid comments before like "OMG. Dude, look at the graphics they are so pretty. But the gameplay is horrible...it's soooo pretty though!"

I'm gonna be honest, but I was not to keep on Final Fantasy 8, it wasn't carefully planned out, I mean you dont get the storyline at all throughout the game, it never quite makes sense, okaay the battle system is alright, but the game, the music, the all over the place storylines - it just doesn't satisfy me!
