Dear Tarja,
It`s time to choose whether the story of Nightwish ends here or whether it will still continue an undetermined period of time. We`ve been working with this creation for 9 years and we are not ready to give up yet. Nightwish is a way of life, something to live for, and we`re certain we can`t let it go.

Equally certain is the fact that we cannot go on with you and Marcelo any longer. During the last year something sad happened, which I`ve been going over in my head every single day, morning and night. Your attitude and behavior don`t go with Nightwish anymore. There are characteristics I would never have believed to see in my old dear friend.
People who don`t talk with each other for a year do not belong in the same band.

We are involved in an industry where the business-side of things is a necessary evil and something to worry about all the time. We are also a band which has always done music from the heart, because of friendship and the music itself. The mental satisfaction should always be more important than money! Nightwish is a band, it`s an emotion.
To you, unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with those emotions have become much more important. You feel that you have sacrificed yourself and your musical career for Nightwish, rather than thinking what it has given to you.
This attitude was clearly shown to me in the two things you said to me in an airplane in Toronto: ”I don`t need Nightwish anymore.” and ”Remember, Tuomas, that I could leave this band at any time, giving you only one day`s warning in advance”.
I can`t simply write any more songs for you to sing.

You have said yourself that you are merely a ”guest musician” in Nightwish. Now that visit ends and we will continue Nightwish with a new female vocalist.
We`re sure this is an equally big relief to you as it is for us. We have all been feeling bad long enough.

You told us that no matter what, the next Nightwish album will be your last one. However, the rest of us want to continue as long as the fire burns. So there`s no sense in doing that next album with you, either.
The four of us have been going over this situation countless times and we have realized that this is the thing we want to do in life. It´s all we can do. In December 2004, in Germany, you said that you will never tour again for more than two weeks at a time. You also said that we can forget about U.S. and Australia because the fees and the sizes of venues are too small.

In interviews I`ve mentioned that if Tarja leaves, that would be the end of the band. I understand that people will think this way. Nightwish is, however, a scenery of my soul and I`m not ready to let go because of one person. A person who wants to focus her creativity to somewhere else, a person whose values don`t match mine.

We were never bothered by the fact that you didn`t participate in writing/arranging songs, you never in 9 years came to rehearse the songs with us before going to the studio. Not the fact that while on tour you always wanted to fly, separately from us with your husband. Not the fact that you are an undisputable front image of the band.
We accepted and felt ok about everything except greed, underestimating the fans, and breaking promises. It was agreed by the five of us that Nightwish would be the priority in everything that we do during 2004-2005. Still so many things were more important to you. The ultimate example being the already sold-out show in Oslo, which you wanted to cancel because you needed to rehearse for your solo concerts, meet frieds and go to the movies. Those were the words Marcelo used in an e-mail explaining the cancellation. This being just one example of so many. I couldn`t think of a worse way of being selfish and dismissing our fans.

Nightwish is a way of life and a job with many obligations. To each other and to the fans. With you we can`t take care of those duties anymore.

Deep within we don`t know which one of you drove us to this point. Somehow Marcelo has changed you from the lovely girl you were into a diva, who doesn`t think or act the way she used to. You are too sure of your irreplaceableness and status.

It`s obvious that you blame your stress and misery on us four. And you think we don`t respect or listen to you. Belive us; We have always had the uppermost respect towards you as a wonderful vocalist and as a friend. And very often during the past couple of years the plans were made according to your decisions only. You were always the only one who wanted more money from the shows.
This ”compensation and more money from everything” –attitude is the fact that we are most disappointed of!

We wish that from now on you will listen to your heart instead of Marcelo. Cultural differences combined with greed, opportunism and love is a dangerous combination. Do not wither yourself.

This decision is not something we are especially proud of but you gave us no choice. The gap between us is too wide. And the decision is made by us four unanimously. We are beyond the point where things could be settled by talking.

All the best for your life and career,

Tuomas

Emppu Jukka Marco

I'm in two minds. I LOVE Tarja's voice, she's one of the best singers on the planet, in my opinion, since she can sing opera, and opera singers are the elite. But also, I hear that she's a bit of a bitch in the band, like a diva, and also, she doesn't write her own music. Hmmm... I just hope the new girl sings good.

Wow, you're only three days late x)
I heard this one on sunday morning when I just happened to take a look at one metal forum's topics.

It's a bit weird how twisted the story is, since yesterday Tarja released her own letter, with she taking the "i'm innocent! the boys never took me seriously adn when I married Marcelo they never liked him, boohoo"-role, of course, she didn't have a choice. How else would she regain her fans if not by denying all those things said in the band's letter? The text sounds a bit harsh, but I know someone from "the inside" who said that this was to be expected, since Tarja never really liked rough music, and other things that are involved in this.

But what makes this event more silly, is that the Finnish media are overreacting to this event, and are even taking sides. Isn't journalism supposed to be all about NOT taking sides in anything? In fact, there are two major sort of "tabloids" in Finland: one of them is taking the band's side, and the other is on Tarja's side. Yesterday I read the other magazine that said they had "an exclusive Tarja interview" (which had about two lines of her saying the same things that her husband had said when he had been called and asked about the matter - it really makes me wonder) that denied everything in the band's letter and then a comment on the side about the announcement being immoral, crude and "evil"...

It's so ridiculous! I mean, why would they write a letter saying all that if it wasn't true, the press seems to forget that they had been friends for the last nine years >.<

Oh well, I didn't much like Tarja's singing-style in the newest albums, since it was a bit too pop-ish, so not a big loss for me there. I hope that with this new singer the band can renew their style and maybe discover something new and different that fits them.

I say scrap the band and just reform with another set of musicians. Music should be about ability and passion, not labels. Nightwish or no, the guys from the band should be able to get attention and deserved respect for trying something new on their own.

I really don't care... They were a oddity to me at best.
I only liked a couple of songs, simply cause it was interesting ("Opera and Metal... hmmmm"). But nothing more.

This is BIG news in Finland. It's on almost every newspaper and even on the news on tv. I've never really cared for the band so much, but I have to say the band isn't much without this female figure. What made Nightwish uniq was the fact that they combined opera and metal music. If they find someone as great and skilled singer as Tarja to replace her and continue doing music that is alike with the music they've made this far, It's fine. If they don't it's a shame and certainly their popularity will drop.

Agreed. Basically, the only female vocals in metal worth listening to are on 'Into the Pandemonium.'

Don't make such statements, there are many good bands with GREAT female vocals in them.

Thorr's Hammer, Hellion, Ashtar, Dream Theater :D

Dont forget Lita ford and Vixen.

Except Lita Ford is not metal, hard rock.

Vixen, I think is the same but they suck either way.

I though they were working a new album!!??!?! Im confuzzled..Haahahaha that Dream Theatre comment..priceless. It doesnt matter if they break up i mean there aren't any other opera metal bands i can think of but there still quite a lot of harmonic bands fronted by chicks in which the songs dabble in metal at times.

The band's not breaking up :P and from what I hear, now they are more free to do music that is more experimental and maybe even rougher. I believe that Tuomas is a wise enough person to realize that Nightwish isn't Nightwish without operatic vocals, that's what it's always been about. So I don't think that the next singer will be anything like Britney Spears or Christina Aquilera x)

the only album i think is a litlle bit worse then the other (not a bad album just the others were better) was oceanborn (schok :P)
OMFG! Oceanborn is widely considered their BEST album o.o! and I think so too, but your entitled to your opinion of course :)

isn;t she the president over there, too?
Not quite, although the president's name is Tarja, her surname is Halonen and not Turunen :P I thought you would've learnt this from Conan O'brien x)

And Crushed Hope, it's Marco, not Marcus ;) (not a big deal, I know, but just wanted to correct a bit x))

I got a kick out of that.

As for Nightwish, be interesting to see whether they go back to operatic vocals, take a more experimental approach, or just go Evanescene on all our asses.

Except Thorr's hammer is grunts so they don't count. Plus not even that great. Other Doom Metal>Doom Metal with death grunts.

Never heard Hellion or Ashtar. Ashtar sounds like a black metal name, probably sucks.

Ashtar are folk metal. >_>

Harsh vocals are still vocals wether or not one person likes them. Thorr's Hammer is one of the best doom metal bands ... easily.

Grunts are best used in a band like Morbid Angel or Obituary. I'd take St. Vitus over any one of the doom-death bands anytime.

Harsh vocals can fit any number of genres, I personally love them in my doom metal.

I mean Acid Bath, are argueably the best Doom/Sludge band to ever exist, and they use a mixture of harsh and clean vocals.

Yeah, St. Vitus are better than most doom metal bands, but if you really want to go that way, Candlemass and Scald are so much better.

Ayreon (and all related projects), After Forever, and The Gathering all have good female vocals.

But on topic- yes, this is big news, but I think it'll be fresh if they find a talented new singer. I'm more into Nightwish for the music anyways.
