View Full Version : FFX for the NES

This has got to be the most complicated NES hack to date. A group of Japanese rom hackers recreated Final Fantasy X using the Final Fantasy 2j rom as a base. All of the graphics have been scaled down to 2D, but they still look impressive with the NES limited pallette. Cutscenes in the game have been reworked, not eliminated.
For instance the underwater scene between Yuna and Tidus still exists.

The battle system has been recreated too. Limit breaks were added along with button presses for Auron’s Bushido attacks. The magic system has been reworked from the ground up to include more spells as seen in FFX.That would already be impressive as it is, but now imagine this. The entire sphere grid and the Blitzball mini game are also in the rom. It really is a 2D version of Final Fantasy X!
Check out the Japanese site http://www.usamimi.info/%7Eff10fc/
see the screenshots http://www.usamimi.info/%7Eff10fc/pc/scene.html

For now it's only in Japanese, I hope someone will take the effort and translate it.

I looked around the site, and the only nes things I could find were of the opening sequence around the campfire and one where you could fly an airship and change between characters walking over green worldmap with nothing else.

You can download the game here:
http://www.usamimi.info/%7Eff10fc/pc/game.html
just choose one of the mirrors

What are all the different numbers in the links, and if they're mirrors, why are all the filenames different?

Larahl
10-28-2005, 10:37 PM
No idea, I just asumed they're mirros.
They might be more files of the game.

Well, I downloaded one randomly, and all it turned out to be was a NES format music file of Tidus's opening line of the game (in Japanese). Did you actually bother to check the links out yourself? :p I think the port is still in development and these are only previews of what to expect :p

I love it. But somehow it makes me think of 8-bit theatre.

I'm not a huge fan of the artwork, but it sounds pretty neat. I wish I could program like that.

This is a better version of the water scene.

That looks VERY cool. I'm a big fan of those graphics, and I'd do just about anything to play a game like that!

Well accroding to GaimerDaily:
An English translation should be coming soon, since the whole English script is already available.

I download a 2.0 MB file from one of the links someone on this thread posted, and got to play a bit...but I can't start a new game or even go anywhere significant in the world map.

As soon as I loaded the ROM Tidus started talking:
"さいごかもしれないだろう?
だからせんぶはなしておきたいんだ
いろいろがんばえてたのはおぱえてる
オレどうなるんだとか
ここどこだよとか。。。"[there's more but the font was so small I had a hard time reading it and since I've played this game many times before I don't think there reallly is any need to do so]
Then the Title screen popped-up.I pressed the space-bar and got to the Load screen:
ニユ-ゲ-ム
or
テイ-ダ ワッカ
ユウナ

I tried hitting the New game screen but they wouldn't let me,so I choose the preexisting save file...and was sent somewhere in the world map.
I entered a cave, touched some pot that fully restored my HP.HP and got out of the cave,to find myself unable to enter a city:
"くっ?だはいれないのか."This means Tidus' wondering why it cannot be opened or something similar, right?
Does anyone know how the hell can I progress(or start anew) with the game?
Thanks.

In this file (http://www.usamimi.info/%7Eff10fc/pc/gif/2_326.gif), I want to know who the second character. I'm assuming that the first one is Auron...

God, I love the Kimahri sprite.

Vyk

Yuna?

Its got brownish hair and is wearing robes. The bottom two are deffinitely Kimahri and Rikku

Ummm... that screen has to be a mockup... It doesn't use any of FFII's graphics or menu placement.

Well, if it's real, then I'd be able to play it on my GP32, awesome little device. But I wouldn't do so until it'd get translated to English. IMO, it's fake.

Wish we could see what they had planned for Blitzball...

Also... That first character in the picture Garamorde posted was Tidus, not Auron.

DJZen

I haven't played SO1 so I can't speak for the quality of the translation. However, Demiforce's translation of FFII, while well intended, was HORRIBLE. You can look at my website (URL in my sig) for details, but some of the more obvious ones that spring to mind are:

The spell AERO: it does poison element damage, hmmm...
The spell PEEP: the actual name of the spell was Basuna
The spell STON: it has nothing to do with earth damage or petrification as you might think, it just stuns enemies.
The enemy DesAngel: You might think it's engrish for "Death Angel", but the enemy is a Goblin Prince. D'oh!
The enemy Satan: Wow, too bad the name of this enemy was Beelzebub, which is NOT another name for the devil, despite what you may have learned from your Black Sabbath records.
The item Thread: If it was called "web" that would have been less confusing.
EggTimer: Yes, I too see how you could get "egg timer" from "silver hourglass". I also see how you would immediately understand that this item casts STOP. Oh wait, no I don't...

As you can see I wasn't satisfied with their work. They got the essence of the dialogue perfectly well, but certain things were just named so misleadingly that it ticks me off. Ted Woolsey at least had the excuse of needing to censor things to keep in line with Nintendo's policies to fall back on. Neo Demiforce had neither censorship nor time constraints to worry about, and they still churned out a translation that caused many misconceptions about the game. Just look at the FFII guide on the front page and compare it to my website if you want to see the vast number of misconceptions.

To be fair I did post a HUGE list of corrections for said page. So it shouldn't be too innacurate, in theory.
