He drops the War gong or similar, he climbs the hill after his men, and if your people kill him first, you can fight him again near Cosmo Canyon and Nibilheim. Sephiroth effectivly dies there so it is the "false gods" (Sephiroth wants to become a god) bane.

Well, I thought I knew FFVII untill I started posting here. This one is hard.

Not Your Enemy- Then perhaps an obstacle? Or a Chocobo perhaps?
But in the way- If it's in the way, it is likely some kind of obstacle that isn't necesserely an enemy.
The seprants spell can clear the path- This implies one can fight it, though it isn't an enemy, and is really what has me stumped.

Perhaps that giant bird that attacks that girl in Junon?

The Materia Keeper is blocking the path forward in Mt. Nibel, but I don't see how the serpent's spell (Beta from the Zolom?) would help in that situation.
