There wasn't anything actually wrong with the thread until everyone decided to spam about it being a bad thread and it would have probably stayed open unless some CK with no life (read: all of them) decides to save the day and delete all the posts, but it's not really worth the effort to be honest.

Google is supposedly easy to manipulate according to the BBC stpry (posted below). (so we should abuse it and get EOFF a #1 spot) The G.W. link is supposed to happen when you type miserable failure, but it was shortenened to failure later. Here is a BBC news story on the subject, that was quite fun to read. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3298443.stm

Internet Parody Hands French Military a Defeat
by Richard J. Dalton Jr
Newsday, March 13, 2003

The French always end up as military toast, or so it seems from a search on the popular Google search engine. But a miffed Canadian student is actually behind a prank that says no documents are found in a Google search for "French military victories."

The search brings up a page that asks: "Did you mean 'french military defeats.'"

The French did win some wars. In fact, Google lists about 63,100 pages of French military victories.

But a Web page says no documents are found when searching for "French military victories" using Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, which bypasses the list of search results and jumps directly to the first Web page in the list.

That happens to be a mock-up page of Google, suggesting a search for "french military defeats." The large Google logo at the top tends to distract Web surfers from the address in the Web browser: www.albinoblacksheep.com/text/victories.html.

Steve Lerner, a 22-year-old Toronto student, said he created the page as "a humorous way of showing political opposition against France's weaseling."

Lerner said he received 50,000 hits in 18 hours on Tuesday, before the site went down for technical reasons unrelated to the large volume of Web traffic. He said it will be back up by the weekend or sooner.

Lerner said he managed to make the page the first search result by listing "French military victories" in several key areas. But Google claims its complex search methods make human tampering with search results difficult.

Lerner hasn't heard from Google, and chances are he won't.

A spokesman for Google , based in Mountain View, Calif., had no comment. But the search engine generally turns its back on parodies, recognizing that eventually the pages will be less visible as they fall down further in the search engine's results

It's called "Google Bombing". All you have to do is get a number of sites to link to a specific url with the link text being the desired google search term. There are also various companies that specialize in raising your site's google search result for specified search terms. I get emails from them often, and then I delete them.

Interesting...

So basically, if we all put a link to EOFF on our webpages, the google rank of this page will go up? That would explain why so much porn comes up on the top of my searches :(

I was searching for gentleman smoking pipe and got boobies
it's almost like google is a secret way of typing/getting boobies
but then when I search for boobies I get all these ugly birds (dumb internet joke people use to excite slightly less smarter people by telling them that they will send or post a picture of their or other peoples boobies thus giving the impression they'll get banned until they open it up and see a bird nobody likes those birds)

Blue-footed boobies? Aren't they extinct?

EDIT: Hmm. After a brief search for "boobies", I've learned otherwise. Now, if you'll excuse me...

That was fake actually, the screenshot of "did you mean french military defeats?" that you have in mind. Go try it yourself and you get tens of thousands of webpage results. I don't see what there was to laugh at if it was real anyway.

Personally I think this guy (http://www.blogd.com/archives/000525.html) should be shot for besmurching my name by posting a blog in my name. People are gonna start thinking I lurk in newsgroups and use "lol" and give out e-props at this rate.

BTW I found this on google if you're wondering about the whole tangent going on.

It's called googlebombing...clever and pointless. You can get google to associate completely unrelated phrases with certain sites. Yes, someone has likely already explained this... :smash:
