OK, my friend and I got into a little argument involving the German U-Boats. So I want to try and clear up this matter. Can or cannot the U-Boat fire its torpedoes while underwater?

They can in James Bond movies.

SEXUAL INNUENDO TIMEIt's always sexual innuendo time at EoFF.

And no, I don't think they could because the torpedoes usually travelled along the surface according to war movies and war movies never lie.

It was possible for U-boats to attack while completely submerged (periscope and all), however unwise, as you'd be attacking completely blindly and you'd increase your chances of missing the target by a huge amount. However, if you consider the periscope being slightly above water to still be classed as 'submerged' then yes, they could fire torpedoes in such a state.

So basiccally... possible, but difficult and therefore not the choice most u-boats would take.

Well they always managed to hit the enemy ships in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea".

The quality of submarine ... er ... drivers has deteriorated in recent years.
